Do we really need a Random Thoughts thread? Thoughts.

Basically we need a set of rules and a set of mods who actually know what the rules are, rather than having a vague memory of some rule about gifs and a 'delete first, ignore questions later' attitude.

Amazingly, despite what they seem to think, there's never been a rule about the use of gifs, other than "if your post amounts to little more than an image, it will be deleted". Somehow, that translates as "if your post includes an image, it will be deleted (depending on the mod)". There's interpretation, and then there's the "Mel Gibson's Shakespeare" school of moderating.

That's another thing - threads that are deleted without warning. I don't understand what good that does, and it's becoming increasingly common. Sometimes things may get a bit out of hand, but surely the moderators could say something at that point and let us fix things ourselves? Deleting threads and then not even letting us know why just has us all scratching our heads. If we knew the reasons for this it might stop it from happening again.

I'd really like if people posting in this thread could stick to the topic in question. It would be for the good of the forum.

I love the Random Thoughts thread. I've learned so many things that have really humanized other members for me. I think it removes some of the general 'just an avatar' train of thought that people have on online forums. These people become actual individuals rather than just some text with a picture, and I think that's very important.

Exactly! I've been saying this for so long. I don't particularly care about gifs, but it is just insane that the only rule they care about enforcing is the picture one that none of them even remember. You could post five paragraphs and if you have one image you're given a warning, but you can troll a thread for 5 months straight and nobody pays a bit of attention to you.

Oop at this turning into a mod complaint thread... all because a mod locked a thread. It really is just like that proverb says. Probably.

So can someone unlock "Random Thoughts" now and we can get on with our lives?

Seriously. This is just stupid. This is going to set off the same event that happened a few years ago. Just open it back up, there was nothing bad going on.

Where is Someboy when we need him? Someboy, open it back up for us!

Well there isn't really much to be said on that matter. If we don't have Random Thoughts we either get a million new threads or let Off Topic die. We don't need it, this is a pop forum and Off Topic isn't completely necessary. But it adds a huge amount to the community and I dare say we wouldn't be anywhere near as close-knit without it. It might not be entirely necessary to have it but I don't see any big argument against having it either.

Agreed - people need a communal talking-about-random-things thread.

Couldn't any one of us start a new thread called "Random Thoughts" at any time or am I missing something?

Discussion about pointlessly closing that thread all seems, well, rather pointless.

I think Off Topic is massively important for the wellbeing of the forum. It makes us more tolerant of other people's views, for one thing.

I mean, I think you have to look at the reason why it was supposedly closed.

I don't think anyone was mocking or purposely belittling members. Any take of an argument that had happened seemed to spawn from people not posting for awhile and then posting again and having a very entitled attitude and speaking down to many people. It's odd. It's unexpected. It's random. It's just weird when it happens and most people can't believe when it's happening in the pop music threads when it becomes so off topic and just confusing at a certain point. Those kind of incidents affecting forum dynamics, I think, just don't go away. It stays for a bit and people reflect and laugh or joke about their shared views or experiences on it.

I don't think anyone has recently been targeted or belittled if they haven't done like it says above and really came back into discussions stomping their feet and insulting people.

I must say I doubt Random Thoughts itself was the issue and more the attitudes of certain individuals who frequent it. I always assumed its sole purpose was to prevent this, rather dashing, section of the forum being flooded by members starting (or bumping) a thread for each issue.

Closing the thread is counter productive. Making an effort to tell individuals the topic they're discussing isn't appropriate for such an environment (if it is deemed so of course) is the logical way to handle the situation.

I thought that perhaps Random Thoughts was accidentally closed, seeing as that happens now and again because the 'Post' and 'Post and Lock Thread' buttons are supposed quite close together.

But then I read passionoia's last post. How strange. Is joking about that 'necrotarian' stuff really the straw that broke the camel's back? If so, then it is rather strange. It's only being referenced because it was a hilariously absurd conversation. I know I made the first reference to it this evening, but I couldn't even tell you who was in the original argument... it's just funny!

Let's not start a new one. We'd lose all those classic posts.

TAKE BACK OFF TOPIC. FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS.
