Doctor Who

How else would they show the effect of Sutekh‘s death dust? It spreads from family member to family member.
I completely missed that’s what they were showing. If that’s what it was they could have done it with Ruby’s adopted mum and grandmother.

It just seemed to show that it affected your memory and that a spoon can be forced into a usb socket to make some tech work.

This episode was very very dumb but I just about came out the other side enjoying it. I always expected Ruby to just have a normal mum and the payoff with the cafe scene and her goodbye was really sweet. The plot barely hangs together but at least the broad emotions hit even if they'd have been far more impactful if we'd had more time to get to know everyone.

Side note; UNIT being the entire setting and cast of last episode and then dying in all of 30 seconds with barely 5 lines between them was...weird. not sure Russell quite knows how to handle them beyond red shirts that don't even die that easy

The more I think about this season the more I want Russell fired. There was a skeleton of a really strong season there and he just never quite gets it there. There were flashes of brilliance but honestly the show needs someone fresh.

We need someone unrelated to the show that isn’t going to just fall into old habits for an underwhelming pay off.

Just because Russell used an old habit for a plot line doesn’t negate some of the best stories we’ve had by him this season

I literally said there has been flashes of brilliance. Space Babies was a dud. The resolution of The Devil’s Chord was rubbish. Dot and Bubble was a chore and the on the spot rewriting of the finale was dire. People are allowed to criticise things.

I enjoyed the rest of the season beyond this but considering how small the seasons are now, I’d rather a producer that hits more than misses gets the job.

People can't be faulted for being annoyed at the "Ruby and her mum were just normal all along!" resolution when literally everything since Ruby's introduction indicated supernatural/otherworldly interference. It feels like somebody decided to make a hard pivot right before filming Empire Of Death and everyone had to just roll with it. It veers dangerously close to that episode of Sherlock that mocked the fans actively trying to engage with the show.

Russell has always been someone to write an incredible first part…then drop the ball in the conclusion episode. While I like the take on Ruby being normal, I do agree that it’s not fair to pull that when all the signs were pointing to it being something else. Those aren’t red herrings - they’re just straight up lies.

That being said, the theories and analysis behind the finale have been so interesting to read. The idea of Sutekh being a physical manifestation of the Doctor’s worst fears, as well as Sutekh symbolizing the Doctor Who fandom as a whole, are so fascinating.

The cinema showings were a box office hit according to Who Twitter.
A lot of cinemas actually added second or third screens because it was so popular. The season overall has been pretty great with viewing figures. The Not My Doctor brigade will compare the viewing figures to RTD1 as if that proves anything, ignoring the fact that TV as a whole has changed. Dot and Bubble and Rogue were actually the most watched shows of the day.

Not sure if anyone has the answer on this but I was reflecting on how beautiful and cinematic this season looked after a Disney cash injection… what’s in it for Disney? Is it just access to the library and cult like fanbase in the US?

Nothing in the storytelling in the opening episodes of this season felt broad enough to bring in a casual new viewer. However, that must have at least been one of the goals as we did get some clunky back to basics exposition in a couple of the episodes.

I don’t know… it just struck me as odd.

They are the main distributors across the world and they've paid very little in the grand scheme of things, considering how much they spend on other projects. However, I get the sense Russell has taken their money and ran off in his own direction. Overall, I've often felt The Whittaker Era looked better, despite the current run's Disney budget. They must have spent a load on the UNIT set though.

I assumed Sutekh was responsible for the supernatural interference throughout the series whenever Ruby's mother was hinted at or mentioned.
