Doechii - Alligator Bites Never Heal

she/they
I'm gonna start this thread because I don't know why we don't have a thread for Doechii yet.

Doechii is a rapper and a singer whose track "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" went viral on social media last year. She recently got signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and dropped a new single called "Persuasive," which is a lowkey, house-influenced bop.

She's also teasing a new single called "Crazy," which is dropping tomorrow (April 8th) actually, so she's definitely running with momentum now that she's signed to a label.

Doja Cat recently name-checked Doechii at the Grammys as someone she'd like to collaborate with, so let's pray, sistren.

Also, go stream her Oh The Places You'll Go EP in the meantime. It's got some amazing, sparkling tracks on there. My personal favorites are "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake," "Black Girl Memoir," and "Something Real."

I'd heard Doechii's name before but never actually listened to any of her music, but Persuasive is a serve and Yucky Blucky Fruitcake is a journey. Aside from obvious comparisons (like Doja or Nicki), it's kinda giving Erykah Badu if Erykah Badu was a new artist in 2022. The range.

I definitely hear this Erykah comparison the best in "Black Girl Memoir." I mean, she literally says, "Or I could be Erykah, sing about the moon and astral 'ject out of Amerykah." And I love how the track incorporates neo-soul with rap.

I wonder how long it will take Azealia to find this and go on a thousand-mini-dots IG stories dragging session about how this is a “Yung Rapunxel” rip-off - which is… a huge compliment dd. The music video is monumental, from the explicit violence, to the commentary on female nudity, to the camera work.

Note from the director:

I'm so excited to see where she goes from here. She has so much massive potential.

Also, today I got reminded of one of her best songs:

No crumbs.

I haven't felt this way about a girl's rapping skills since... Azealia. Yeah. Wait... Doja too, but you get my point!
