She's catching some heat for this clothing line...



I'm of two minds, knowing "it's giving" was not created by Rolling Ray, and has been around for decades in black and black queer culture... but also knowing the phrase was definitely popularized by Ray over the last 3 years or so. If she uses his specific phrase (which is used in the announcement video) for profit, I think she should definitely acknowledge him as an inspiration, run him a check, and maybe even feature him in a campaign if he's down for it. Otherwise... I don't really know? But someone dropped the ball in not covering the bases here.

Dd I knew this would happen as soon as I saw it. How bout celebs stop trademarking sayings they picked up from the internet...

I think language and popular consumption leads to this. It happens over cultural lines as well and ultimately there needs to be a larger conversation about harm vs. appreciation...I just don't think it's necessarily intentionally harmful but still, it tends to benefit a very small pool of people. That's a conversation brewing everyday.
