  1. I absolutely love Breakaway in all its X Factor winner single realness. I think it fits in with the album despite that.

    What an amazing Top 10! So many classics!

    Hilary Duff - Come Clean

    Score: 9.118

    My Score: 7.5
    Highest: 11 x 1 (@Milotic) 10 x 20 (@Sprockrooster, @theincredibleflipper, @soratami, @livefrommelbs, @yeRleDanaL, @saviodxl, @BubblegumBoy, @pop3blow2, @Hurricane Drunk, @Ana Raquel, @Pineapple, @Conan, @ohnostalgia, @Robsolete, @AlmostFamous, @Verandi, @aux, @phily693, @Memoria, @Music Is Death)
    Lowest: 6 x 1 (@londonrain) 6.5 x 2 (@Phonetics Girl, @2014)

    Come Clean was the second single from Hilary's second album Metamorphosis. It was released in 2004 and charted at #35 in the US.

    The song was used in the theatrical trailer for her 2004 film A Cinderella Story, but is probably most notably known for being the theme song for the MTV reality tv show Laguna Beach.

    Also can we talk about the album cover for a second? Whoever chose that photo did her so dirty, like was that really the best shot? It's so awkward. Don't even get me started on the awful photoshop job.

    @unnameable (9) - The mix on “most wanted” is better (though not rock in the slightest).

    @berserkboi (9) - Loving this more than I remember I did!

    @DJHazey (9.25) - Even if I’m grown more ambivalent to its power over the years and I’d rather seek out One In a Million for example...that’s just recency bias speaking, because it’s the quintessential Disney-Pop masterpiece and deserves to be treated as such.

    @Memoria (10) - An ethereal anthem. Hilary's discography throughout the years really doesn't get enough credit.

    @livefrommelbs (10) - The other runner-up for my 11. One of my all-time fave songs. Even though I'd classify it more as pop than pop-rock, there's no denying how exceptional it is. The peak of teen pop, fight me on it.

    @Pineapple (10) - An undeniable classic and anthem for generation noughties. In any other rate this is an easy 11.

    @Sprockrooster (10) - Queen Hilary to make me stand in the rain and screaming I want to be cleansed. She did that. An 11-contender for me here!

    I guess I can post some commentary here since I didn’t include any:

    I can’t really quite capture what it is about this song that’s kept me hooked all these years. The instant I heard it through my cheap headphones on my CD player when I was 10 years old, I knew it was my favorite song ever at the time, and it really cemented Hilary as one of my all-time favorite pop stars. The lyrics have applied to multiple periods of my life where I had to be like “screw it, forget what other people think: I need to do what’s best for myself.” I was literally “coming clean” to myself, so to speak; shedding all of the layers of bullshit and getting to the nitty gritty truth. It’s been a consistent part of my playlists ever since childhood as a result, and will probably remain one of my favorite songs as I grow older!

  5. #9

    Michelle Branch - Everywhere

    Score: 9.139

    My Score: 10
    Highest: 10 x 18 (@Sprockrooster, @theincredibleflipper, @livefrommelbs, @berserkboi, @saviodxl, @fatyoshi, @Blond, @Crisp X, @ohnostalgia, @Slice of Life, @Robsolete, @AlmostFamous, @phily693, @LKane, @Memoria, @Guy, @Music Is Death)
    Lowest: 5 x 1 (@Pineapple) 6 x 1 (@Phonetics Girl) 6.5 x 1 (@aux)

    Everywhere was the lead single from Michelle's major-label debut album The Spirit Room. It was released in 2001 and charted at #12 in the US.

    The video won Viewer's Choice Award at the 2002 MTV VMAs, and speaking of the video, anyone else watch it back as an adult and realize that she is literally stalking this man dd?

    @DJHazey (9.5) - Among her holy trinity of monster anthems, this is easily my least favorite and I always stop short of calling it outright overrated. So look at my score and do the math. This girl was done dirty as far as careers go, possibly more than any popstar in history. She should have had like six multi-platinum albums by now with at least two huge singles on each and a catalogue full of rock belters like this. Any lies detected?

    @Sprockrooster (10) - The way Michelle Branch managed to get the highest average from every girl in my zeroes poprock rate. With less album tracks from the likes of Kelly Clarkson, P!nk and Avril I do not see her pulling it off again, but I do see her do very well with this one and deservedly so! #8 the last time. It will be a true testament to her talent and this song if she manages top 10 again this rate.

    @saviodxl (10) - The way it starts acoustic and then from the second verse on it bursts into electric guitar perfection! Uh! Some girls of this generation wish! Add bold vocals and catchy chorus, I'm sold. And this:

    @Memoria (10) - The opening track to one of my favourite albums of all time, back from when import albums cost £17.99 at HMV. That was a lot of pocket money for me at the time, but it was worth every single penny.

    @livefrommelbs (10) - Truly one of the best pop-rock songs of all time. Utterly impossible to resist its charms - I feel like everyone, pop-rock fan or not, loves this? If you do not you need to learn to love and respect yourself"

    @berserkboi (10) - Perfection in this genre!

  6. Ya'll really fucked up with this elimination to be honest! This deserved Top 5!

    Also the way team US was leading by double the amount almost the entire rate, and now team CAN has officially caught up with each having 4 songs left.

  7. A bitsy shocked by this exit? I thought it was gonna reach the top 5 easily. Also it's marginally better than All You Wanted.
  8. I stan Everywhere but All You Wanted is Michelle's best track and I'm glad everyone had the sense to prove that in the rate.
  9. What the actual fuck? Well, I guess every elimination will hurt at this point, but everywhere deserves a place in the podium.

    Avril Lavigne - My Happy Ending

    Score: 9.215

    My Score: 9.5
    Highest: 10 x 19 (@Sprockrooster, @Phonetics Girl, @theincredibleflipper, @livefrommelbs, @yeRleDanaL, @berserkboi, @2014, @saviodxl, @unnameable, @Blond, @Crisp X, @Slice of Life, @Robsolete, @AlmostFamous, @aux, @phily693, @LKane, @Memoria, @Guy, @Music Is Death)
    Lowest: 6.5 x 2 (@Daniel_O, @LKane) 7 x 1 (@Pineapple)

    My Happy Ending was the second single from Avril's second album Under My Skin. It was released in 2004 and charted at #11 in Canada. It also went Top 10 in several other countries.

    For years I thought this song was about her breakup with Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley. But Wikipedia says they got married in 2006 and broke up in 2009 so the timeline does not add up all dd. Don't know where the hell I got that from...

    @DJHazey (9.25) - The boppy sister-song to I’m With You as in they’re probably the most beloved songs from Avril’s first two albums. Of course it’s such an anthem because it kind of blends together a lot of the factors that make people love her music. Mainly taking the bold rocker-girl element with an explosive chorus to match and adding to it the emotional storyline and sweet serenades Avril‘s become known for.

    @Sprockrooster (10) - This was the last standing Avril song in my poprock rate and I would say justice. That chorus is a stroke of genius and a moment.

    @Memoria (10) - Avril did the "aa-aa"s first, and did them better. Take that, Green Day.

    @unnameable (10) - Clearly her greatest artistic achievement. What an epic chorus, and the middle 8 slaps.

    @livefrommelbs (10) - Perfect, mid-00s pop-rock. One of her best choruses.

    @berserkboi (10) - God Tier Avril!

    Umm what the fuck just happened

    I thought this was a shoo-in for the top 5, oh wow
  13. I...

    Also none of the people scoring it below a 9 saying why. I guess we know why. Cause you can't articulate an argument to give it below a 9. So you bunch of trolls, expose them @slaybellz.
  14. Okay! Below a 9 you say? The rest would be these four:

    @Hurricane Drunk (8)
    @ohnostalgia (8)
    @Epic Chocolat (7.5)
    @londonrain (8)

    Also I believe this was the last song left not to receive any 11s.

    Sorry I'm late to this discussion, but I suspect @ohnostalgia meant to say that P!nk is only one year older than Vanessa Carlton, which is correct: Vanessa was born in August 1980 and Pink was born in September 1979, so the difference is eleven months and one week, to be precise. Pink is 41, Vanessa is 40, Michelle is 37, Avril is 36 and Stacie is 35.

    To be honest I wouldn't count Stacie as part of that pop-rock contingent at all - it was basically Pink, Michelle and Avril, with Vanessa pitted against Michelle because they came out at the same time but with Vanessa having a much more piano-pop vibe. The Spirit Room also came out a couple of months before Missundaztood and nearly a year before Let Go, so the timeline checks out.

    (And Xtina is actually younger than both Vanessa and Pink.)

    I simply had no time to write commentary for this rate- I told @slaybellz I would just post my opinions as I went along. Reasons why My Happy Ending did not get a 10:
    1. It’s no I’m With You, it’s not even a Complicated.
    2. When you go outside of her own songs, My Happy Ending doesn’t hold a candle to All I Wanted, Breathe, Hands Clean, or Since U Been Gone.
    3. I never loved loved this song, even back when I was 15.
    4. And if you want a super petty reason, Avril’s tutu annoys me as much as Avril’s wig annoys @slaybellz in Nobody’s Home.

    Also yes @londonrain, I did mean Vanessa Carlton. I too have never thought of Stacie as part of the Avril/Michelle/P!nk/Kelly group either. Love her songs, but I predominately think of her as a pop, pop/r&b, and Christian pop artist.
    pop3blow2, Memoria, Milotic and 4 others like this.
  17. Not much to say about it, I’m just not a fan.
  18. Damn I'm getting old
  19. THIS WHOLE TOP 10 IS HURTING. Every elimination feels premature, but the remaining 7 songs are all incredible too? MIXED FEELINS.

  20. My Happy Ending over fucking Complicated?!? Are you kidding me right now. It’s the perfect angry breakup anthem, for me at least. I should’ve voted and given it my 11, but alas.

    Anyway ya’ll need to get some taste.
