Early 2000s Rock Chicks Rate

BareNaked is honestly one of my favourite albums of the 00s. That was an underrated classic, that was an underrated classic.

@londonrain can expect to find me hiding under his bed with a hook for a hand tonight, after what he’s done to Brandy’s former co-star.
Let's get this straight: the title track of BareNaked needs to stay here until at least the top 20. Can I Go Now just isn't on par with it, unfortunately.

Cheyenne Kimball - Hanging On

cheyennekimball-thedayhascome-1n6m.jpg

8bit-USAFlag.png

22/24

Score: 7.114

My Score: 8.5
Highest: 10 x 3 (@yeRleDanaL, @Ana Raquel, @Music Is Death)
Lowest: 2 x 2 (@Blond, @Hurricane Drunk)

Well... Apparently Hanging On was actually released in 2006 and not 2005 like I originally thought, I don't know how I didn't that catch that until now. My bad!

It was the lead single to her first and only solo album, The Day Has Come, whose release coincided with an MTV reality series following her entry into the music industry. The single, which was also the theme for the show, charted at #53 in the US.

I never actually watched her show cause it looked boring as fuck dd, but I loved the theme song, and would always stick around long enough to hear it, then change the channel.

Also does anyone else think Taylor Swift kinda stole her thunder a little bit? They give me the same vibes. In fact in 2008, Cheyenne put her solo career on hold and joined the country music band Gloriana, which opened for Taylor Swift on her 2009 Fearless Tour. She left the band in 2011 and I don't believe she makes music anymore.

@Sprockrooster (6) - Her vocals sound a bit screechy at times.

@livefrommelbs (7) - I remember this little number from PJ00s a few rounds back! Didn't love it then, don't love it now.

@berserkboi (6.5) - Tis alright enough I don’t feel like skipping!

@saviodxl (6) - Decent pop-rock effort, but not memorable enough like most of her peers.

@unnameable (8) - A pleasant discovery from this rate.

@DJHazey (9.5) - Love seeing her on this list! Although “One Original Thing” is my all-time favorite because of it being the theme song to her MTV show that followed her rise to mild stardom, this will also get its share of love too. Her pre-country album has a few other bops on it too like “The Day Has Come” and “Hello Goodbye”. Side note, I was the one who gave this song to @Music Is Death to enter in a PJ00s.

I think you're misremembering that there @DJHazey, Hanging On was actually the theme song (hence why it's titled Hanging On (Theme from "Cheyenne" on MTV) on Spotify dd. But One Original Thing did appear on the Aquamarine movie soundtrack, so there's that!

Katy Rose - Overdrive

8bit-USAFlag.png

21/24

Score: 7.146

My Score: 8
Highest: 10 x 4 (@soratami, @pop3blow2, @phily693, @Music Is Death)
Lowest: 3 x 1 (@Daniel_O)

Overdrive was the lead single to Katy Rose's debut album, Because I Can. It was released in 2003 and charted at #37 on the US Adult Top 40.

The song is best known for being featured in the Mean Girls film and soundtrack in 2004.

@Sprockrooster (4) - Yeah, this is way too average for me.

@DJHazey (5.75) - This name always gets pushed on me by last.FM like “Hazey you’re going to love this, trust us!” and I just don’t hear it!

@berserkboi (7.5) - I do enjoy the chorus and bridge here, the verses aren’t really for me though so this is the best I can give!

@unnameable (9) - Really great chorus.

@Memoria (9) - Feels like cheating a little bit but how could I not give the soundtrack to the most iconic film of my generation a high score?

What a fucking joke. Easily one of the best songs in the rate.

Let me pray for Samantha Ronson, who I feel will get unfairly eliminated early as well.

Melissa O'Neil - Alive

Melissa-600.jpg

8bit-Canada-Flag.png

15/24

Score: 7.167 EDIT: 7.035

My Score: 6.5
Highest: 10 x 1 (@Music Is Death) 9 x 3 (@BubblegumBoy, @Conan, @Slice of Life)
Lowest: 4 x 1 (@Pineapple)

Melissa O'Neil is the winner of the third season of Canadian Idol. At just 17 years old, she was the first female to win the show and definitely was Canada's attempt at having their very own Kelly Clarkson.

Alive was the lead single from her debut self titled album. It was released in 2005 and went straight to #1 in Canada after being performed on the show.

She has not released another album since, but is now a moderately successful actress, most known for her role on the show The Rookie. Making her possibly the most successful Canadian Idol alumni after Carly Rae Jepsen of course, oh and that gross dude from Hedley.

Also fun fact, she performed Believe in You by her Canadian teammate in this rate, Amanda Marshall, during the "Canadian Hits" themed week on the show.

@Sprockrooster (5) - A bit of a bore.

@livefrommelbs (8.5) - I don't know Melissa and I have thoroughly enjoyed this introduction!

@DJHazey (6) - Never heard of her, but wikipedia is saying she won Canadian Idol, so let me guess, they had the Canadian Kelly Clarkson in mind. Too bad her career apparently never took off. This is okay, kind of doesn’t really have a spark to speak of though. It’s not really her fault, just play this and then some of the bigger names in this rate..it’s not even a contest.

@unnameable (8) - Wait what? That actress I recognise was a Canadian Idol winner and singer? I like her voice.

@berserkboi (8) - Big fan of her voice!

This crossover American Idol x The Rookie promo is actually really meta dd ^

A band from Canada who are curiously popular.
Oh I see. Well, judging by their main pic on Spotify they give me Maroon 5-esque vibes. Which may not be a good thing.

A pretty popular Canadian pop-rock band who terrorized our radios for over a decade and we were only able to get rid of after the lead singer got accused of violent sexual assault by a minor.
EDIT: oh my...

I find it a bit weird that some acts like this band and many solo singers from Canada have a very local success. I mean, is it because the fail in other markets or there's not even an effort to promote them internationally?

Yeah either failed or didn't even try because of the risk return ratio. I guess when the local success is enough to sustain them, in part by constantly being pushed by CanCon, why go risk losing money in other places for a slim chance at success. It made more sense back in the day when the music industry was less Globalized.

Also, i'm honestly surprised Alive lasted this long, I was sure it would be the first song to go. It's my lowest score eliminated so far.

Nobody has said it so far so I suppose I will have to do the dirty work.

Ashlee Simpson is without doubt the worst singer* featured in this rate and no amount of Kara DioGuardi choruses, studio trickery or teenage nostalgia can save her two songs here when she sounds like complete ass on both.

Y'all welcome.

*Yes I'm fully aware that this rate also features teenage Hilary God Duff and Lindsay Lohan. Talk to the hand.

On that note I'd like to ressurect this parody

Sis delivered the bops, you can't complain bout that!
