Early 2000s Rock Chicks Rate

Now we're doing the "Ashlee is the worst singer" take? Whatever, it's a good thing I never listen to music going in with a "let's critique this singer's technique as if I'm a vocal coach or expert". All I'm trying to do is enjoy the voice I'm hearing not go "Oh gosh, I like this voice, but technically she's probably not top tier, so I think I need to let this discovery go..." *rolls eyes*

Ashlee's voice came up a few times in the Ashlee vs. Lindsay rate. I get it. Ashlee's voice can be rough & maybe an acquired taste, but it I always legitimately admired some of the clever little things she did to add character to her vocals (to help cover her general lack of 'range'.) This is actually the thing that made her music standout to me & was one of the more endearing things about her vibe.

I found this ramble of mine from the rate.

I think Lindsay has a better voice, as far as being less abrasive & more 'radio friendly' (well you know what I mean. It's not like Lindsay was killing Pop Radio. Ha!) She's technically a better singer. The 'Don't Move On' medley from Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen & 'Confessions of A Broken Heart', showcases this for me.

That said, I personally like Ashlee's voice better. While she has limited range & is 'shrieky' in places, I think she figured out how to do some really signature things with her voice within its limitations. This adds a touch of personality to many songs that could've been even more forgettable with another artist.

I could write a similar thing in comparison to Hilary, who I also love. The problem with her vocals is that her voice is just pretty limited in range, it's not very strong, & the tone was probably 'too sweet' for some of the rockier production they put around her on her first records. Now, I still love a lot of those songs, but the weakness in he vocals became even more evident when I started hearing her voice over production that better suit it (Breathe In. Breathe Out & some tracks on Dignity).

Speaking of which, my fave Hilary vocal might actually be on this random Third Eye Blind cover from last year. Her sweet tone is simply perfect over the kind of production in this. I want that kind of album from her. A lo-fi, breezy, California pop-rock album. Sign me, up.

Ashlee is definitely the most abrasive vocalist out of the three, and in the rate in general, and it can some time to get used to, but it's worth it because the material is strong.
Lindsay has a solid voice, and of the three probably the most range. She probably has the voice that's easiest to swallow, like @pop3blow2 sort of said.
Hilary is my favorite of the three, both for material and for her voice, because in her early mateiral, when she used it right, and the songs didn't overpower her, it created something wonderful. Plus
she also has the best material

Well it helps when Dignity and Breathe In. Breathe Out. are easily better than any album any of three released.

Then where I probably differ from the other Hilary stans is that I'd put the Lindsay and Ashlee albums in some order and only then would put Hilary's first couple at the bottom of the ranking pool.

I actually agree with this, although the singles from Hilary’s first two plus Most Wanted are iconic enough to give her the edge in an overall career.
