Early 2000s Rock Chicks Rate

Wait, did @Sprockrooster give this a 5 or an 8? I just need to know how mad to be.
Oh nooo... My first fuck up of the rate!! I just consulted my spreadsheet and double checked @Sprockrooster's DM. Looks like I accidentally switched their scores for Alive and Time and this...unfortunately changes some things. Or fortunately for Time...as that would mean it's still in.

Alanis Morissette - Precious Illusions

10/24

Score: 7.922

My Score: 7
Highest: 10 x 4 (@Sprockrooster, @soratami, @Memoria, @Music Is Death)
Lowest: 5 x 1 (@Pineapple) 6 x 1 (@2014)

Precious Illusions was the second single from Alanis' fifth studio album Under Rug Swept. It was released in 2002 and charted at #4 in Canada.

Under Rug Swept was the first album Alanis wrote and produced all by herself. In a track-by-track commentary about the album she explained the meaning behind the song:

"Basically I'm talking about the difference between really being alive and really embracing the reason why I'm here on this earth versus my just being asleep and sleep walking and accepting the status quo and accepting somewhat of a suffering mentality to being here. It really is my responsibility to distinguish the difference between the two and choose which one I want."

@DJHazey (7.5) - Devastatingly lyrics, but I’ve never given it that many spins because the music itself never excited me too much. Its commentary on depression and holding on to love for the wrong reasons, stemming from that depression, are super relatable though.

@berserkboi (8.5) - This somehow became a full blown Alanis favourite, but it’s still a very strong song!

@Memoria (10) - Under Rug Swept was the first album of Alanis' that I ever bought and this song was always my favourite. Haven't heard it in years though, so thank you for the wonderful reminder.

@Sprockrooster (10) - Sprocky, what is your favourite Alanis-track? Well That I Would Be Good, but this is a very close second and I basically swore I would 11 it in the next rate it would be my 11. Well I lied. I added it to my poprockrate, but that was too packed and it lost out. Now I am still not 11’ing it cause there is a song here that deserves the world and my heart. I broke my promise to Alanis and for that I am sorry. Especially as she gave us this stroke of bliss with this track and I want to shout-out the music video which still captivates me.

Lindsay Lohan - Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)

Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father) was the only single to Lindsay's second and final studio album to date, A Little More Personal (Raw). It was released in 2005 and charted at #57 in the US. Also #7 in Australia, a hit!

The song was written by Lindsay as a letter to her father Michael, who survived a car crash for which he was charged with driving under the influence. An accompanying music video which she directed herself, references her father's alcoholism and alleged domestic abuse.

An interesting fact is that Lindsay actually recorded her vocals for the song in her trailer during the shoot of her movie Herbie: Fully Loaded.

@berserkboi (8.5) - I have grown to enjoy this a lot more over the years!

@Memoria (10) - Sure, it's a bit cliché in places but if anyone other than Lindsay Lohan had released this, it would've got so much more praise. Her performance in the music video truly is heartbreaking.

@livefrommelbs (9.5) - THE DRAMA, MAMA. An underrated moment, emotionally and vocally.

@unnameable (10) - Successfully channeling raw emotion better than most of the entries on this list.

@DJHazey (10) - Now I’ve always had love for Confessions, long before I got into the rest of her discography. Infinitely more mature and candid than anything the other Disney Queens were releasing. Lyrics that can be spun so they apply to anybody’s family matters, certainly in my case too. It’s hard not to listen to this and not feel something deep inside.

@Sprockrooster (10) - The power that this song has literally destroys careers of other women. It is that good. A serious 11-contender for me!

Ashlee Simpson - La La

Score: 7.947

My Score: 8
Highest: 10 x 8 (@Sprockrooster, @soratami, @DJHazey, @unnameable, @pop3blow2, @aux, @phily693, @Music Is Death)
Lowest: 3 x 2 (@londonrain, @Guy)

La La was Ashlee's third single from her debut album Autobiography. It was released in 2004 and charted at #86 in the US. Although, the song performed much better abroad peaking at #10 in Australia and #11 in the UK.

Apparently the album's title track was initially planned as the third single for the era, however after her little mishap when she attempted to perform the song on a certain late night tv show (which we'll get into later), they decided to go with La La instead.

@berserkboi (7.5) - A bop for sure, but Ashlee’s affectations have prevented me from revisiting very much over the years!

@livefrommelbs (8.5) - That opening riff is a fucking serve, but it's a bit shouty and all over the shop.

@Epic Chocolat (8.5) - Banging!

@Memoria (9.5) - An oblivious tweenage me should absolutely NOT have been singing along to this as much as I did at the time. Inappropriate banger.

@saviodxl (9.6) - I'm pretty sure parents were concerned with the no so subtle sexual lyrics back in the day. You know what they say: the best way to make them want it is to make it forbidden. 13-year-old me fell right into this trap.

@unnameable (10) - I never did understand the “I’ll be your lemonade when I meet you at the door” of the clean version.

@Sprockrooster (10) - I am still disgusted with how this track was treated in the zeroes poprock rate cause it did not even manage to get to top 50. I am very pleased to see it getting a second chance! Boyfriend managed to get #15 in that rate. So I know she has the potential to go that far. But I am surely wishing for some rate-losing backlash here.

@DJHazey (10) - I’m not one to pump myself up over my commentary because it’s usually meh, but I’m always going to be proud of this one from an earlier rate. Clearly one of those times when it was probably like 1am and I was feeling the moment: "This is the peak of the energy-packed rebellious-yet-cute and adorable persona I love from Ashlee and why this has always been a favorite. The chorus always comes flying in like a slap to the face from Ashlee but somehow you look at her dancing around the kitchen, waving her hands around in her underwear with headphones on and you're ready to pour two bowls of cereal and watch Netflix with her for hours and forget she was ever mad.
