EastEnders

It was a really fun episode apart from Kathy being Cindy's attacker. If it were another time I would think Cindy pushing Ian into the path of a car would signal the end of her, but I just don't think they'd kill her off after only just resurrecting her.

They're too careful with the show's legacy nowadays and the rash decision to kill R&R because they'd written Ronnie into a corner will be brought up any time killing a big character is suggested. I'd rather see Cindy isolated after this and have a storyline that completely deconstructs her character before redeeming her.

Likewise with any other big characters dying. Sonia and Martin essentially have plot armour at this point. Natalie Cassidy will be back. Martin will probably be marrying Stacey within a year. I can see Ruby, Reiss and maybe one more death this week (prayer circle Callum gets his head caved in by burning debris).

If Cindy does stay I hope Max returns and they get together.

Their relationship would be so layered - their mutual hatred of Ian, Jane & Bobby. Nobody apart from Jane knows that he is responsible for Steven's death. The drama that would ensue.

I thought that episode was kinda....awful dddd. Yes it was very entertaining I suppose, but the writing was so shoddy it was ridiculous. I mean, Ian being actually shot in his kitchen but then walking around trying to do a deal with Cindy, Bianca and Reiss having a chase scene in the Square with absolutely no living soul around (during a wedding party no less), George and Ian watching the Vic start to burn but carrying on having a chat about how Ian should leave Cindy alone.

Also, the acting between Cindy, Kathy and Ian all episode....hammy doesn't begin to cover it. I agree that Michelle Collins has clearly decided that this needs to be a comedic, rather than dramatic, storyline, it's the only explanation.

But I'm obviously dying to see the fallout from the Vic exploding.

Ahhh those Grant and Bianca scenes were the highlight of the entire 40th for me. Patsys performance was so believable and I got emotional when she called her “my beautiful Tiffany”

Oh how I wish time could be reset and Tiff hadn’t died.

I’ll never get over it (or Prue in Charmed)

Sorry, but I found Tiffany's death hilarious at the time. That final shot was so unflattering! I gasped. Martine really upset someone behind the scenes.
I feel like she was the first real ‘soap superstar’ and her ambitions outside of the show caused problems. Wanting to dip in and out around her own schedule.

Matthew Robinson spoke about Martine’s departure from the show in 2010

“Martine McCutcheon didn’t “decide to leave the show”. She demanded the BBC allow her to come and go within the series at her behest, making it impossible for storyliners to write coherently for her character.”

Full Martine section of the interview behind the tag.
During your time there several big names decided to leave the show such as Patsy Palmer, Ross Kemp and Martine McCutcheon. What was the feeling this created behind the scenes, and were you happy with the way those characters were written out?

Martine McCutcheon didn’t “decide to leave the show”. She demanded the BBC allow her to come and go within the series at her behest, making it impossible for storyliners to write coherently for her character. So we had little choice but to kill Tiffany. Yes, the character was popular; yes, Martine had talent. But no one is bigger than the show – Executive Producers included. It is true that Ross and Patsy decided to leave. But we saw these exits as opportunities to strengthen EE, to take it forward, not disadvantages. Judging from the subsequent viewing figures, our audience agreed with what went up on the screen.

Martine claims she heard about Tiffany’s being killed off from the radio. Is this true?

It’s likely. Following a brilliant spoiling headline in the Daily Star “Tiff’s A Stiff”, all the radio stations were talking about it within an hour.

Isn’t this a harsh way for an actor to find out she’s having the book closed on her?

Certainly, but this was not our fault. We’d hardly made the decision and were planning how and when to tell Martine when the news was leaked (NOT by me). Leaks are part and parcel of the lives of both Soap stars and Soap production teams. Why do I think of heat and kitchens?

Do you feel killing Tiffany off may have been a hasty decision in light of Bianca’s return to the show?

Not in the least. Far from hasty, the decision was carefully made, not just by me, but by the trio of Mal Young, Peter Salmon (BBC1 Controller) and me. We knew exactly what we were doing and it was exactly right for the show at the time, whatever Martine continues to say about it. Sometimes, actors want to have their cake and eat it. This is not possible in a streamlined production factory, like EastEnders.

I thought Barry's death was the most unflattering one. Just so pathetic.

Although I do quite enjoy the fact that the actor still makes a career out of being "Barry from EastEnders" (e.g. those "Barrioke" shows) despite having left more than 20 years ago.
