Euphoria (HBO)

Barbie Ferreira did a great interview on Armchair Expert and talks very fondly of her experience on Euphoria. Despite her not REALLY getting into what went down, she does say that she never walked off set + says many of the reported stories were untrue. She does say that she feels like Sam didn't relate to Kat so he struggled to write a proper ongoing arc for her. It sounds like she didn't love what was being written in season 2 so just basically asked to step/scale back.

I'm glad that she seems proud of her work on the show and her character - and she literally says she left because she was going to get stuck playing "the fat best friend" in the background, which is exactly what she never wanted for Kat. I'm still sad they didn't give her a proper farewell, though. She was so essential (and SO good) in season 1.

He became too enamored with the Cassie-Nate-Maddy triangle and Rue's storyline (with Fez, Jules, Lexi and Elliot as satellite characters). Both of them share the same universe but they were very much enclosed storylines, almost like a Venn Diagram, while Kat didn't fit organically on either one, making hers an afterthought. You could tell they had very clear directions for those characters and then were like "oh snap, Kat's there too! What do we do with her?"

Yeah this is spot on. Even though there were some moments where it looked like Kat was being cut\removed during Edit and some awkward spots.

The narrative that they're filming this only later this year... timing isn't really HBO thing is it? At least feels unlikely they'll be able to make a fourth season after this. Maybe for the best.

Season three is…never happening dd. This quote from HBO’s head of drama:
There was a two-and-a-half-year pandemic-related gap between Season 1 and Season 2 of HBO’s hit Euphoria, created by Sam Levinson and starring Zendaya. Fans will have to wait even longer for Season 3 between Levinson’s commitment to The Idol, Zendaya’s packed schedule, and now, the writers strike. Season 2 of the show debuted in January 2022.

Euphoria is one of those that we had begun writing in tandem with post-production on Idol but at this point, we don’t have countless scripts,” Orsi said. “We can’t start shooting, so the delivery of that show — ideally in 2025 — will be determined on when we can pick back up with Sam, who at this point is all pencils down and just finishing posts on Idol.”
Sounds like 2025 was the goal before the writer’s strike. Disaster.

HBOMax must be getting worried. They only have a handful of really good shows that they spread out very thinly to keep subscribers.
