Exercise

I got an Apple Watch for my bday in 2021 and I would say it definitely helped me monitor my fitness a bit better. Not sure how accurate it all is but having an idea of how many calories you’re burning during each workout is helpful and I like the reminders about getting up and moving to close my fitness rings if I haven’t been active during the day.

On another note, does anyone know of any useful workouts I can do with resistance bands? I’ve bought some as I want to do more calisthenics this year and I know resistance bands are used a lot. If there are any decent YouTube videos or channels I’d really appreciate it.

I got my iWatch to make sure I wasn’t too sedentary at the height of the pandemic.

Post pandemic I’m still using it and has been essential to keeping me on track and motivated.

I got a Fitbit for Christmas, it's probably the cheapest one, I wanted an entry level smartwatch to see if I like it. It's good to see the effects of my workouts at the gym, and it's clever how it knows when I'm out on my bike, asleep etc. Whether I end up just using it as a watch, time (ha!) will tell, but I do like stats, so I might stick with it.

I ventured out for a 5km today at lunch and 1km in a massive out-of-nowhere wind/rain/hailstorm set in. Got drenched, phone started acting up and skipping songs after 5 seconds, trapping me in a weird intro-megamix hell I couldn't rectify as the screen was too wet, and just as I got home, the rain stopped!

Leapt in the shower and set it cool but that nasty cold-to-not-cold burning scratchy skin thing happened anyway.

But it was kinda awesome. The beach was deserted and with the wind behind me I flew down that boardwalk.

This sounds awful and amazing at the same time.

I started running (again...) last year and between the rain/wind and Australian sun burning my bald head, it was just too bothersome. I have rejoined the gym and am appreciating the treadmill more than ever. I also just bought my first pair of wireless earbuds and ohmygod why didn't I do this earlier?!?

Running is really not the one at the moment but things are hopefully going to be lighter and warmer soon. I've foolishly signed up for a running challenge this month and dropping the gym for 3 runs a week and then 2 HIIT workout. My knees hate me.

This is a bit of a shot in the dark but I have a question for anyone who doesn’t enjoy working out but is still doing it: is there a way to not be depressed after a workout? Seriously I always feel so down.

I know you said you don’t enjoy working out, but are there certain exercises you enjoy or don’t mind doing more than others? If so, build your workout around the workouts you enjoy, high intensity or low, whichever. One thing I learned recently was that I enjoy the act of exercising when I do workout so actually enjoy. Too often people think they have to do certain workouts just because. Screw that.

I would also say curating a playlist of your favourite songs can help you shift your mindset when exercising.

I do boxing, which is fun as it’s just like you don’t know that you are exercising. Also with some friends so we just chat a bit here and there.

I want to make exercise my daily routine but i don't know where to start. I kind of despise gym, love treadmills and bicycles but i can't with lifting. I also don't think i can run right now dd.

I have a good size of belly which i like to be honest but i do want to lose a little bit of it in order to truly wear what i want to.

If you have a pair of dumbbells and a mat, you can workout at home. It's what I've been doing for the past two years and I've loved it. I also dreaded the idea of the gym and being able to do whatever I wanted at home felt a lot more comfortable. That said, I might join a gym in a couple of months as I'm moving away to do a hospital training and there's no way I'm bring 100kg in dumbbells with me fff but I'll try and go at 6am or something to avoid people.

Exercising should have the opposite effect, so maybe you are overexerting yourself? Are you resting? Sleeping 7-8 hours? Properly fuelling your body? That can have a negative effect on basically every other aspect of your lives, and no amount of exercise is going to improve it.

So kinda exercise related but what to y’all eat to go alongside all that exercise? I work 12 hour shifts and just have toast for my lunch when I’m in work. I know all that bread isn’t good else but it’s just a quick lazy fix

Diet really depends on what your goals are but I find the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate a really easy to follow mindset for most meals.

Your eating should be:
35% veg, 15% fruit, 25% whole grain carbs, 25% healthy protein.

I tend to do fruit in the morning or as snacks and the rest across each meal. Veggies are hardest to get in at morning times so I tend to have more for lunch and dinner.

I lost over 6 stone back in 2016 and it genuinely started from just going for walks. Now when I properly got into it I started to improve my diet and cut out a lot of the junk I was eating, but sometimes it takes just a very small change to start getting properly motivated.

Nothing beats just sticking in your earphones and getting lost in your own little world for half an hour. And I say this as someone who hates running and pretty much all other exercise dddd

I just wanted to say thank you for this… I came into this thread looking for this exact info. My gym is being demolished and rebuilt over the next 18 months and there isn’t anything close enough by to get to via bike so I’m going to have to sort something out in my derelict garage / spider colony.

My PT had a baby in December and has come back to work now so I haven't really 'worked out' as such since November. I went back today and I can still do all the weights I was doing before she went off, so I'm super happy! I was convinced I would have lost it all.
