Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (WINNER REVEALED, THANKS GUYS!)

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#1o & #o9)

Oh I didn't think you were trolling. I just find it strange given that Idler Wheel is so incredibly written that you didn't allocate a few more points on that merit alone. It isn't just about melody!

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#1o & #o9)

And I just can't forgive you because usually you're so en pointe and we agree entirely.

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#1o & #o9)

Don't exect to skip by in a rate without criticism when you stand mostly alone in defiance of a great piece of work; of course it is fine to prefer Tidal, but being completely non receptive to a piece of work that is obviously a growth in songwriting from the former doesn't make much sense. It's not as is The Idler Wheel... is all that different, so people might find it odd that you can't find enjoyment in both.

Let's agree to disagree shall we.

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#13)

I like The Idler Wheel more than Baby Clyde, but I agree that it's her worst and not especially easy to listen to at times. It's an interesting album full of compelling lyrics, but the music doesn't just compare to the lush beauty of Tidal, an album I still find astoundingly gorgeous after almost twenty years.

Let's get a little personal for a moment. I thought about writing this long post for "Sullen Girl", basically explaining why I haven't actually listened to it in years and didn't listen to it for this rate, either. In a nutshell, this song hits very close to home for me and I therefore find it extremely hard to revisit it. However, I decided not to go through all of this trouble because ultimately, this is a pop music forum and while I do cherish many of the people here, I don't feel completely comfortable exposing myself that way. There is one thing I want to say, though. I have nothing but deep admiration for Fiona for writing this song and being brutally honest about this subject in interviews. She has helped me tremendously and I'll be forever grateful for that.

I completely get this. I have very similar feelings about "Sullen Girl."

That's exactly what I love about the album, though. It's not trying to hide how ugly human emotions can be. In fact, it really embraces that ugliness without adding the safety net of lush instrumentation. It feels more confrontational than any of her other albums and it really challenges you to analyze it and draw parallels to your own life. I find it an extremely brave piece of work.

I was going to participate in this but half of Tidal just kind of made me give up and I never got to Extraordinary Machine. Sad to see most of The Idler Wheel out too early, although I'll admit it only hit me several months after release.

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#1o & #o9)

I mean, Idler Wheel is a growth in songwriting. There's no denying that. Fiona's always been above average but Idler Wheel is her peak as a songwriter regardless of sound.

8. Anything We Want

fiona-apple_idler-wheel_COVER1.jpg

Average Score: 8.614
Highest Score: 10 x 4 (Jwentz, AstronautMikeDexter, ladygagaogaga, Mister Unicorn)
Lowest Score: 6 x 2 (Rhombus, Baby Clyde)

My score: 10
My favorite lyric: "Let's pretend we're eight years old playin' hooky. I draw on the wall and you can play UFC rookie. Then we'll grow up, take our clothes off and you remind me that I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone."

Since we're already talking about "The Idler Wheel", it's time to say goodbye to our last remaining track from that album. "Anything We Want" would have made a worthy winner in my opinion. If I ever decide to get married, I demand that this song will be played during the first dance. It's romantic without being sappy, which is a pretty hard thing to pull off. Of course, Fiona does is perfectly. AstronautMikeDexter commented: "The first time I heard this song was actually at my first ever Fiona concert during the pre-Idler Wheel tour in 2012. It was a standout on the tour and it’s a standout now. It’s so romantic, playful, and beautifully poetic. I love to imagine the rivulets of a neon zebra as she shakes rain off her stripes. It’s a striking image." Jwentz said that he knew "from the second this song appeared as part of a live set on YouTube" that it would be his favorite from the album. Having almost arrived at the end of "The Idler Wheel", imaduck decided to take a look back on the album as a whole and called it "such a roller coaster, one minute I'm a hot mess, then I'm shaking my tush". He also added "sexy Fiona is back, and this time she has bandages and lube". Those are his words, not mine.

That's an opinion not a fact.

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#o8)

May I ask what exactly bothers you about the album, Baby Clyde? Not attacking you or anything, I'm genuinely curious.

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#34 - #21)

He already explained.

The problem is that the album's an absolutely cacophonous mess. The vocals often seem to be in a different time signature to the instruments. She sometimes seems to be singing in some weird Chinese pentatonic scale. The songs are one long tuneless howl after another. I actually thought I was rather generous in places.

Time to reveal our top 5!

7. Get Gone

41EAseGlukL.jpg

Average Score: 8.818
Highest Score: 10 x 3 (ladygagaogaga, JamesJupiter, Mister Unicorn)
Lowest Score: 7 x 1 (imaduck)

My score: 10
My favorite lyric: "I'll idealize, then realize that it’s no sacrifice because a price is paid, and there’s nothing left to grieve. Fuckin' go!"

There goes my favorite song in this entire rate, as well as one of my favorite songs ever. Deep inside, I always knew that "Get Gone" wasn't going to win over some of her more popular songs, but I'm actually really happy that it made it this far. If "Love Ridden" has helped me wallow in self-pity, this song has helped me realize that life goes on and that some things just aren't meant to be. I could go on and on about this one, but I've already done that several times in the past and it wasn't always appreciated, so I'll keep it short and instead listen to it again. While JamesJupiter expressed his love for "Fucking go!” by calling it "such a moment", ladygagaogaga simply wanted us to know that this is in his top 5 favorite songs ever. I kind of said that already, but I appreciate your excellent taste.

6. Sleep to Dream

Average Score: 8.977
Highest Score: 10 x 4 (JamesJupiter, Baby Clyde, ladygagaogaga, Jwentz)
Lowest Score: 7 x 1 (imaduck)

My score: 9.5
My favorite lyric: "This mind, this body and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways. So don't forget what I told you, don't come around, I got my own hell to raise."

Any predictions?

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (TOP 5 REVEALED!)

Criminal winning would be too obvious.

Limp or Paper Bag please.

Re: Fiction of the Fix: The Fiona Apple Discography Rate (#o8)

This isn't some Britney Jean affair, this is a great accomplishment by a songwriter who has fine tuned their craft.

In your opinion. I don't think she needed to fine tune her craft. She was better as a 19 year old.

There are no tunes. The lyrics are like some chaotic stream of consciousness that doesn't in my opinion add up to great song writing. Using more or longer words doesn't mean they are any more profound. Half of it doesn't even rhyme which makes them turgid poems put to overbearing and self indulgent music not songs. Rhyming is half of the skill of great songwriting to me. Anyone can put words to music but finding the exact right words that convey the meaning whilst both scanning and rhyming properly takes real talent. .

I'm baffled as to why you're so hostile to my perfectly legitimate and well reasoned arguments. Plenty of you have dismissed 'Tidal' which I personally think is ridiculous but you are completely entitled to your own opinions. I just happen to dislike 1 particular album by an artist that I otherwise admire very much.

Get over it.

.

'Criminal' winning would be glorious.

'Sleep To Dream' is my joint favourite song in the whole rate. Sad to see if go.

Does anyone remember that awards ceremony one year when she refused to read the stupid intro that came up on the autocue. Was late 90's at the MTV awards I'd guess. Twas hilarious but I can't fine it anywhere.

She was such a hot mess in the 90's, she seems so shy and refined these days (live). I remember she did a live set on some late night music show, and tried to get her sexy foxy dancing self on, it was so awkward.
