FKA Twigs - Eusexua

he/him
It all started from discontent from her fans about her not acknowledging the cancelled shows and the conversation led on from there. Someone then mentioned the ballroom influence in her new show and she went on to talk about how she has a deep appreciation for ballroom culture and that she shouldn't have to explain every creative decision she makes just because fans assume she is doing something in bad faith (like appropriating ballroom culture for clout).

I agree with a lot of what she was saying about not needing to explain every aspect of her art, but I think she took a lot of offence from fans who were rightfully annoyed at the shows being cancelled and no acknowledgment from her publicly. She was kind of using 'I'm shy and don't use social media' as an excuse. The mods were also deleting any slightly negative comment made in the chat during this whole thing.

The ballroom thing is funny because I remember her always being open about that? Nn. But mess on both sides. I don’t think any artist needs to be deeply entrenched in their fanbase, and certainly not on a cesspool like Discord.

Yeah, it's been a mix of things. Her subreddit went into full-on snark mode ever since the initial tour date cancellations w/ zero explanation or message from Twigs. There were rumors that she'd cancelled to go to Paris Fashion Week, but there's no evidence of that and Twigs maintained there were legit staging delays.

Re: the silence, Twigs said she was busy taking care of her dog and memorizing dance moves but always planned on saying something. And reminded her fans she's shy and sensitive and always doing her best (multiple times). Then drama came from the Playboi Carti thing and people were questioning her being pick-n-choosy with her morals/who she surrounds herself with. Then some other people were taking issue with the race of her dancers, appropriating ballroom culture, etc. And then some other people were still whining about North West and Childlike Things (dd).

So she logged on to Discord and was clearly sarcastic and angry. She said she's overwhelmed by how parasocial fans have been this era and it makes her not want to bother making art anymore since people always jump to think the worst of her as a person.

My favorite quote from the Discord has to be when she casually includes "the INCREDIBLE body of work that is EUSEXUA" mid-sentence. I screamed. Love her.

The whole thing sounds like a mess.

Is this a new thing in marketing? I saw that Jade has her own discord too?

Maybe certain artists might be able to benefit from something like a discord but they're already too 'available' as it is via TikTok and Instagram. Someone like Twigs shouldn't be on there.

I don’t think any artist should ever be on a digital environment with random people (including non fans) asking whatever they want to. It’s not healthy. Why there wasn’t someone selecting questions for her if she wants to do some sort of Q&A?

Re the ballroom thing, she’s a tiny party only the ballroom parts and instead lets the queer poc dancers take center stage for those so there’s no need for the uproar I think.

Still thinking of the show don’t think I’ve seen something like this - I loved everything so modern but also Alvin Ailey at parts. The perfect mix of classic and sex clubs dd.

I loved the fact she doesn’t even have her mic on her hand for the dance heavy parts, I could concentrate on the visual aspects without worrying or thinking about miming.

From a cursory look at what's happening, it feels like what I am witnessing is an artist who doesn't have a huge systemic team to handle the level of fame and expectation of access that is the unfortunate default in 2025.
Alot of the most vocal complaints are coming from redditors, discord users, and fans who seem *very* online.
In contrast Fka Twigs strikes me as someone who is maintaining her online presence, but is not online like that.

Even down to the criticism of her being a friend of Playboi Carti, it isn't difficult for me to imagine Twigs not knowing about his violent behavior. These things are easy to find out if you are a fan who follows an artist online or in a parasocial way, but when you know someone as a peer/friend/real person there can be alot of simply not knowing if you aren't online.

And she mentioned it, but I don't think people recognize how much time, discipline, and focus is required not only to create a tour or album like Eusexua. But to have a central part of your artistic statement be learning and honoring the different creative practices she is tapping into.
Singing, Producing, songwriting, choreography/Dance, Ballroom, Vogue, Pole, Aerials, Wushu, these are all incredibly time consuming art forms with high learning curves that take immense effort to be competent much less combine into a music performance well.

This isn't to say fka Twigs is a perfect innocent angel who can't make any mistakes. But there are certain artists who are living in their own world, and she strikes me as someone whose entire life is the creative process. Combine that with having a small team that doesn't match the scale of her fame, and you get these moments of tension between listener/musician.

I also think it doesn’t help by of her being one of the aesthetic makers and archetypes during tumblr days a la Lana and we all know what kind of fans (myself included tbh) they ended up breeding + combined with the fact that she’s fiercely protective about her art (which is her right). I agree with everyone that she probably needs to draw the line and stop interacting with fans online. Stay mystique queen!
