Might be time to whip up another batch of Lemonade, because this one's been out in the sun too long...

This is one of those songs that I forget I love it when I'm not listening to it. Like, I was questioning my score just there and put it on to reassess, but then the "We rode motorcycles..." part came in with that flawless melody and I just fell to pieces. A classic slice of old American blues, Beyoncé slips into it shockingly well. Is there anything she can't turn her hand to and immediately become brilliant at?
We'll kick off with constantino, who gives it a bronco-bucking (I hate myself) 10/10, "This might actually be my favourite Lemonade track?? Who’d have fucking thought it, especially since I ordinarily despise country music with every fibre of my being. What a melody, what great guitar work…the vocals…the lyrics…just URGH."
eccentricsimply says, "I can't believe Beyoncé invented country." I hope she did so sponsored by Bud Light. munro also buys into the hype, "Queen of country and genre swapping." Carrie Underwho? Reba McInwhat? joe_alouder is similarly in awe, "Queen of inventing cuntry music.." ericcccc enjoys how it breaks up Beyoncé's rampage through the alberm, "This was a nice change of pace for the album. Not revolutionary, but unexpected coming from her which was appreciated." Even Sprockrooster locates taste for a change, "Never in my life did I ever hear something like this. This is a mix of folk, country and jazz. Get that multiple genre-crossing GRAMMY à la Gary Clark Jr. for a single song. After a single play, this song got right into my high rotation music playlist and it ain't go nowhere anytime soon. I also particularly liked this part in the Lemonade video where there is a throwback to the life in the 1800s for a black family. I rarely hand out a 10 for a very recent album in a rate, but this song almost got me to question the 11 I had in mind."
FresherThanYou serves PTSD-suffering Little Monster, quite frankly, " Took me a long time to get my head around this one." Yet you only gave it a 5? "It's a nice change to hear a country track from Bey but I just hope it's not going to become a regular theme." Dance-pop pining teas. send photo demands that Beyoncé shakes the foundations of white people even further, "Sweep the CMAs or whatever award show country people do." and Remyky22 is... oddly accurate, "What a fucking bop. Dolly Parton and Erykah Badu going into Helix Studios and making the best song ever." while CasuallyCrazed serves "I only know one country song" teas with the following, "Beyoncé creating her own Jolene. Absolutely brilliant." ...Right.
IMHO awards a rather pitiful 6/10 and adds, "Much like Love On Top, this feels costume-y to be taken seriously on its own merits, the melody is their but the production, the clapping and whooping, the gun-touting tall tales it's all just_too_fucking_much.gif." Okay lady but let's get in line dancing formation. Meanwhile, Jersey is the first to arrive at the hoedown, "Backwood Country Bumpkin realness. Taylor could never. I see Carrie and Miranda biting their nails at a track like this not coming from their mouths. Rapid delivery, the right amount of twang and the true Louisiana bayou, lagoon feels wrap this in a perfect little bow. Big ups to Blue congratulating Motha." and ThighHighs is hosting the damn thing, "Incredible. I love every bit of this song. Completely unexpected and a total game changer. My runner up for my 11."
We'll finish with ohnostalgia, who awarded full marks for a kill shot, "I'm so happy Beyonce revived country music and killed all the bro country dudes." America really is awful, isn't it? Let's have a video of Beyoncé performing it in Germany, just to rub salt into their red white and blue wounds.

Okay, so I find this utterly stunning and heartbreaking... but I also kind of treat it more as an intro track instead of a proper, meaty song, and that's entirely my problem and I'll need to seek help for it. String outro is a thing of total beauty. Perhaps I should have scored this a bitty higher after all...
Let's kick off with FresherThanYou, "Really sets the show in motion and the lyrics are so stunning to me, love the vulnerability. Love the bit where she quickly says Prayin'" while eccentricsimply pronounces it to be, "A good introduction track. It’s very grand." joe_alouder falls to pieces, " Those lush strings are so heartbreaking. It's a beautifully sad opening." and ohnostalgia states the obvious, "From the moment I heard this track, I knew Lemonade would be something special." I knew it was going to be special when I heard a clock tower chime twenty three times at 1AM, but that's a story for another time. IMHO announces that, "The lyrics here are some of the most stunning of her career to date, as it effortlessly and succinctly opens the curtains on Lemonade; laying the narrative and emotional groundwork for such an ambitious project with devastating composure."
CasuallyCrazed better pray most of the voters don't catch him, "This is a little low energy to start an album as militant and dynamic as Lemonade, and those initial melodic gasps sound an awful lot like the opening melodic gasps in “Pretty Hurts.” However, the song’s searing strings and heavenly melodies serve as a beautiful, poignant prelude to the drama that unfurls after…" Okay, you might live to see another day. aaronhansome gives us his final bit of commentary, awarding full marks and adding, " This is still one of my top three from this album, from the moment I heard it, I was taken aback." Bye, sis!
constantino says, " This is beautiful and well produced, truly one of her finest ballads. It’s just so euphoric and majestic; I can see some clear James Blake influence (before he dropped that shitty mess of an album earlier this year)." Oop! The fans of all the albums full of pretentious groaning this year are shook! Speaking of which, here's Remyky22, "Not here for this actually. It's even gotten worse than it sounded initially." NOT after that dissertation on fucking "Facebook Story" you don't. ThighHighs takes the second to last word here, "Pensive, peaceful, tranquil, God-like... It's a hymn from God herself. What a way to quench the mouths of sistren everywhere. The way she sings, "maybe it's a cause for concern" cripples my heart each time I decide to press play." No joke, I sometimes just skip over it when I listen to the Lemonade because it's such an affecting opening. Unf.
We close with Oceandrive, who finally reveals what he bestowed his 11/10 to, ""You can taste your dishonesty it's all over your breath" is a call to arms of anyone that has had their heartbroken. It's fast becoming my favourite opening lyric to an album. Initially this wasn't a particular standout for me on Lemonade, then the second and third listens happened and this song slowly started to I ravel and reveal how stunning it really is. As well as its beautiful lyricism, there are so many nuances here from the backing vocals switching frequency in the intro, to the closing instrumental showing just how lonely a suspicious mind can be. Then we have that moment just before the second verse kicks in. I switched my 11 four times. It started with Formation, then Me, Myself & I then it found its way to ***Flawless, maybe I am a fool or just soft and pink but I feel like in good conscience I can't leave it anywhere else but here, it's too beautiful."
Lemonade stuff is notoriously difficult to find, but I've managed to find a decent working link to the only performance of "Pray You Catch Me" so far, where it was the first track in Beyoncé's Britney-deleting medley at the VMAs this year. Kii.
