Florence and the Machine - Ceremonials

NEVER LET ME GO, NEVER LET ME GOOOOOOO
NEVER LET ME GO, NEVER LET ME GOOOOOOO
NEVER LET ME GO, NEVER LET ME GOOOOOOO
NEVER LET ME GO, NEVER LET ME GOOOOOOO
NEVER LET ME GO, NEVER LET ME GOOOOOOO
NEVER LET ME GO, NEVER LET ME GOOOOOOO

[sorry, it's just stronger than me.]

It's nice to have a video that actually captures the drama and energy of the song after a slew of rather reserved and static imagery.

Sorry for the double post, but a few thoughts I've had swimming in my head over the last few days:

1. I made the mistake of listening to "Cosmic Love" the other night, which sufficiently made total mincemeat out of everything on Ceremonials and I'm afraid I may have ruined the album for myself a little bit.

2. In light of the new Drake album and the brilliant Rihanna collaboration, I'm actually finding myself a bit disappointed that his supposed collaboration with Florence never happened. Not only should have sounded heavenly on "Take Care", it would have been nice to hear her voice on the rather reserved production of Drake's album as opposed to the endless clatter of Ceremonials and, I guess, Lungs.

She was supposed to work that ever-so-horrible Drake? Oh dear! I'm so glad that collaboration never happened. I'd hate to see Florence doing anything with any rapper. I feel like she's the only sane one among my three faves..

No Florence and rappers please

Also, does anyone else think that What The Water Gave Me is the best thing off the album? It's glorious.
i've said this before. It's easily the best thing on this album, and possibly the best thing she's ever done

In fact, I believe she's the one most likely to work with a rapper and/or a hip-hop producer.

(Out of your 'faves', that is)

(Well, actually Róisín has worked with rappers)

It was quite the surprise to me to hear her speaking voice while watching an album behind-the-scenes video interview/piece at my workplace today. To think of the reserved and gentle, warm production on Take Care, she would have easily slotted in. Imagine her on Take Care, or maybe the choir on Lord Knows? Something chilled-out, calm, and a complete-180 to Ceremonials?

I fear you really have not heard Drake past his radio hits and guest contributions? What's there is a hybrid hip hop artist (who happens to "rap") and an R&B crooner. And his music really is not what you'd expect. Listen to an interview with Drake (or any rapper/hip hop artist, really) most, if not all, are highly articulate - maybe with a nontraditional vernacular - but articulate nonetheless. Drake is one of those few. I think it speaks volumes that Florence even considered working with him in the first place. Together, a track between the two holds the opportunity of being highly creative and artistic.

Sophie has worked with a rapper. Roisin has worked with a rapper. Not Florence... But you're right. She's the only commercially successful popstar among my favourites, so she is the one most likely to work with a rapper. I hope its Dizzee Rascal then, cos I don't mind Dizzee, and I had made my peace with You've Got The Dirtee Love. Not Drake. Never!

I agree that they could make something really great together. At least it would definitely be better than 'You've Got the Dirtee Love'.

I've heard more than his radio hits. His R&B isn't good either. I really wish this whole hip-hop crossover into other genres dies soon. It's a little annoying sometimes. It's fine when you have a commercial sell out singing alongside some rapper, but its different when you have an "artist" like Florence collaborating with them. I appreciate hip-hop music too, and I do have my favourites in that genre, but I really won't like a rap duet with Florence.

That said, it might give her a lot of commercial exposure because Drake is one of those celebrated hip-hop acts. I will conveniently ignore the collaboration if it ever happens.

I just think it's rather silly that you deem Drake to be "some rapper" while Florence is some kind of "artist" and neither can enter into some type of collaboration. Florence herself was considering going with a pop and urban approach to the album (which admits that she is a fan of this "commercial sellout" music as you put it) before realizing the signature sound she was semi-pioneering with Lungs was her home. Just because she happened to follow that path doesn't suddenly re-brand her some "artist" that is above the possibility of collaborating with a hip hop artist, who has in fact done very much for re-invigorating the genre as of late.

In reality, they're both singing about human experiences (albeit from distinct perspectives) so if they do collide musically, I welcome it gladly. I just sense a fair amount of music bigotry when one deems certain musical artists to exist above others simply because of your own classification of said artists.

She's already been branded a sell-out by some fans on the letters page of NME this week for appearing on X-Factor! They were horrified that not even Florence is beyond the grasp of Simon Cowell. I doubt a duet with Drake will wreck her 'artistry' too much! It might be interesting to hear, actually. Lots of unlikely collaborations have yielded a brilliant pop moment such as Run DMC vs Aerosmith or Blondie's Rapture. Girls Aloud vs Annie too, of course!

As I said before about singles:

01. Shake It Out
02. No Light, No Light
03. Never Let Me Go
04. Only If For A Night
05. Spectrum
06. What The Water Gave Me

You really need to stop referring to NME like it's proof of anything.

As for the No Light video...it's interesting. The falling scenes are a bit shoddy and the plot overall isn't very engaging but she looks lovely throughout, the scenes over her standing against the New York skyline are beautiful and every so often the action on screen captures the energy of the song really well.

The radio edit is a bit heinous though, that middle-eight should never be tampered with.

I personally don't feel it is proof of anything and I disagree with everything people put in it...but it does annoy the right people on here. Not only that but I thought it would be interesting in the context of what was being discussed. Re-read it and you'll see my point isn't misplaced. If the letters section is representative of her early fanbase though, it's interesting that they see her as a sell-out. I have no problem with her being on X-Factor at all, but then I'm not really a fan of her so it makes no difference to me.
