Forum maintenance 5/23

Hi everyone!!

I made a joke when I was doing all the forum fixing business that was something along the lines of "oh well that's that, see you in six months", and then I disappeared for not quite six months but still quite a lot of time, so the joke ended up not being very funny. Or did it become funnier? That's not for me to say.

Sorry I haven't been posting and responding re ongoing stuff. I have had quite a lot on. Maybe next time I have a lot on I should just let you know rather than hiding.

Anyway:

1. I'm going to go through all various requests/bugs etc, catch up on what needs catching up on from the other Forum Maintenance thread, and fix what I can fix. I can't do everything! I am just a man!! But I will do my best.

2. I need to have a proper chat with all the fantastic and v patient moderators about preparing for the next bit (this will no doubt involve some discussion about strengthening and reviewing posting guidelines and rules).

3. Membership will reopen, all hell will break loose, etc etc etc.

4. Some of you mentioned that you'd be comfortable paying for use of the forum; I'm going to introduce some sort of payment option (probably a few quid a month) for people who want to experience the forum without ads and maybe with some extra features. (But I also want to make sure the forum's usable for people who can't or simply don't want to pay, I know a lot of forum members will be experiencing tight times right now.) This will likely take some fiddling, I'd be happy to hear via PM from anyone with thoughts on what they'd like this to look like.

5. Oh yes, I should have mentioned this as point 4, but ads will reappear, hence what I did write in point 4.

I'm closing the previous Forum Maintenance thread so please use this one moving forward. Please be kind to me!!

Thank you very much and I send my best wishes across the internet.

Just wanted to say thank you for this 2023 makeover, there was a short period of time where I got genuinely sad thinking this place could disappear soon, so I'm glad we got a new lease on life.

Very excited for new members (the K-Pop sub-forum specifically could really use it) and also PJ Premium, oh yes.
I know Twitter Blue will be gagged and gooped!

One small fix I would like implemented, but I'm not sure how feasible it is: when I put someone on ignore, it also hides any threads they create, which is a bit bothersome. Just because I don't wanna see that person's posts overall doesn't mean I should get locked out of entire discussions on an artist/album/etc! Coding-wise, I think this could be done by excluding "opening posts" from the ignore function, or something like that?

Also, I would still like threads I'm caught up with and don't have new posts to disappear from the Watched Threads page instead of just being un-bolded, like it used to be before. Giving the option between this new system and the old one in the settings or as a toggle on the page itself would also be nice.

You know what.. just sell trophy points.

On the topic of financially contributing toward the forum: forgive my ignorance of platforms and taxes and what might be more trouble than it’s worth, but would one conceivable option be to set up a Patreon/whatever for “The Popjustice Fund” which could be used for maintenance, without needing to receive anything in return? As was said, the goal isn’t to make anyone feel badly if they’re not able to contribute, so maybe it should be a private thing.

The main thing for me (aside from the watched threads issue which has already been mentioned), is that it would be great to have the option to edit posts in a bigger window again, like you used to be able to before the forum change. That was just really convenient, especially for larger posts that require a lot of formatting, such as in rates. Doing it in a smaller window can be a bit of a pain, and so is half the formatting tools being hidden under "More options".

Imgur images seem to have stopped working altogether since yesterday.
This might not be a forum thing. I've heard from a couple of people that Imgur is purging the site of all "anonymous" uploads and basically anything deemed "inappropriate" with The Big One happening on May 15th, so back that shit up divas!

If people put a youtube link in their signature, can it just be a link instead of a fullblown embedded video?
It's a bit much to have that under every post.

I thought imgur embeds had stopped working with the last forum update, at least I haven't been able to post any imgur gifs etc since then.

They worked when you added the [ IMG ] tags yourself. Seems to be a Popjustice thing because they still work elsewhere.

The inability to write after/under an image if you already wrote above it (How do rate hosts do this??) could use some fixing too

I never had this issue myself, but I imagine you should be able to fix it by hitting the toggle BB code button, should be able to write anywhere then.

Oops! We ran into some problems.
Security error occurred. Please press back, refresh the page, and try again.

5 times a day, at least. God, it's so annoying. Is there something i can do, or a setting i can uncheck on Chrome to stop this?

Ha, and i got it again when i tried to submit this.

I +1 dark mode but my number 1 request is bringing back the feature on the Watched Threads page that makes the the threads you've caught up with disappear on the list.

I really have lost the ability to catch up on all the threads I follow since we lost that feature. It's just too many pages to click through.
