  1. It’s interesting to mention Friends and The Simpsons together, because there was definitely a decline in both of them during the noughties where, upon re-watches, I’ve noticed they had a sudden surge in homophobic humour.

  2. All of them got pretty annoying towards the end ddd I think I’d only be friends with Rachel and Chandler in real life.

  3. Yea this is one of Friends’ weirdest blind spots. It genuinely was a trailblazer in regards to featuring a same sex wedding very early in the series, but it always treated lesbian relationships different than gay men and feminine men.

  4. I think Seasons 1 and 2 suffer from being too dominated by the Ross and Rachel relationship which I personally was never invested in, I much preferred them as friends. I think they had more chemistry as friends. Season 4 for me is probably the peak as everything felt equal between all six and it was the last season of the girls and guys in the apartments. Season 4 had one great ep after another.

  5. Carol and Susan's wedding episode is jaw-droppingly terrible, even for 1996. And Chandler's dad being gay got used as a punchline far too often.

  6. I mean we all know Ross is a human dumpster fire but his hatred of Sandy, the male nanny is so gross. It was gross in 2003 and its even more horrid now. That was a rotted storyline.

  7. That was the point though, wasn't it? Him being so freaked out by a man doing a job that he sees as a woman's job. Nobody else has a problem with it from what I recall (not seen that ep in years so I can't recall if the other boys back him up or not), so the problem lay with Ross and there are probably many men who feel the same way so the episode was kind of highlighting how stupid this attitude is, rather than saying men can't be nannies.

  8. I think Joey was very taken with the male nanny. I guess Ross did come to a realization about his upbringing at the end of the episode but the way he treated Freddie Prinze's character was still appalling.

Although his dad never seemed like the hyper macho type?

  9. Yeah it was a really weird character assassination on Jack. Especially as Ross was the favourite child too. It's puzzling.

I don't have an issue with the way the men are too each other around gay stuff. As my experience with straight men is they are pretty tame in comparison to actual straight people.

  10. Season 8 was definitely Jennifer Aniston's season. Not surprised she got the Emmy that year. She took that storyline and ran with it and I thought she did brilliantly.

  11. Jennifer carried the show the last few years, just like Eva Longoria did on Desperate Housewives. Everyone else was well into 'punching the clock' territory long before the end.

  12. I know it's been discussed before, but the absolute worst storyline they ever had on the show was Monica thinking Chandler was into shark porn. The fact that someone had that thought, pitched it, it was accepted and written, then presented to the actors who all didn't go 'what the fuck is this?', then they learnt the lines and went out and performed it? Unbelievable.

  13. Had a mini-Friends-binge yesterday and watched episodes that I haven’t seen in several years. I always seem to be drawn to Season 9 so reason or another, I don’t know why. So I watched The One With Phoebe’s Birthday Dinner and The One With All The Lottery.

I don’t know if it’s just because it’s been a while and I’m older now but it’s amazing how you can still laugh out loud at something that you’ve seen countless times before.

  14. The Lottery one is great because isn’t it just mostly just them locked in the flat? Those were always the best ones.

  15. Yeah the lottery episode is one of the best episodes, probably the funniest episode post season 6.

  17. Jennifer Aniston never switches off her A-game for one single second does she?

  18. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I went on the Warner Brothers Studio Tour in LA and they told us that the show contractually had to have 1 episode per season based entirely in the apartment to save on set building costs and camera setups.

  19. I said a scripted reunion would work if it were one big bottle episode and I stand by it.

  20. They're called Bottle Episodes and they're my absolute favourite. Community's 'Cooperative Calligraphy' is a masterclass as is Friends' 'The One Where No Ones Ready'.
