General R&B Discussion

Discussion in 'Pop & Justice' started by Crayons, Jan 12, 2012.

  1. I thought it would be good to have a thread to talk about R&B in general, past R&B and current artists and releases who might not warrant a thread on their own.

Releases in the next few months include:

Melanie Fiona - The MF Life (February 7th)
Singles: Gone And Never Coming Back, 4AM

Lloyd - King Of Hearts (UK release March 5th)
Singles: Lay It Down, Cupid, Dedication To My Ex (Miss That)

Loick Essien - Identity (March 5th)
Singles: Stuttering, How We Roll, Me Without You

Monica - New Life (March 6th)
Singles: Anything (To Find You), Until It's Gone

Chris Brown - Fortune (expected sometime in March)
Singles: Strip, One Of Those Nights (pop single expected 31st January, apparently produced by William Orbit)

...and Brandy, R. Kelly, Ashanti, Trey Songz, Ciara, Usher, Alicia Keys, Mario, Toni Braxton, Miguel, Janelle Monae and SWV are all expected to release albums at some point this year.

I hope they all do end up releasing, last year was a bit dry. The only great albums from last year are F.A.M.E., Late Nights & Early Mornings, Good For The Soul and My Life II.

Also, new British acts are really exciting at the moment like Tanya Lacey, L Marshall and Angel. L Marshall's mixtape and Angel's EP are very well produced.

  2. Didn't think much of any of these, except Late Nights & Early Mornings.

There were much better r&b albums, '4' being the obvious standout as well as Dawn Richard's mixtape, Nikkiya's mixtape, Jhene Aiko's mixtape, and albums from Anthony Hamilton, Raphael Saadiq, Anthony David and Goapele.

Brandy and Ciara are probably my 2 most anticipated of the year (as well as Cassie and Teedra Moses, just like every other fucking year where they still haven't released their follow-ups).

  3. !!!!!!!!!!

    This.

  4. I'm looking forward to Solange, Ashanti, Brandy and Tamia albums the most!

Although I love 'SMFU' by Dawn Richards a lot, sounds like it could have been on 'Human' by Brandy.

  5. I totally forgot about Raphael Saadiq! It was so different to what I am used to and took me a while to get into it but it's an amazing album. I need to check out his older stuff.

  6. Rick Ross's new track with Kelly Rowland is all kinds of amazing.

  7. I LOVE 90's R&B and Brandy is my absolute favorite artist.

I also like Babyface, Usher, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Destiny's Child, Boy II Men, Monica, TLC, R. Kelly, Aaliyah, En Vogue, Jon B., Mya and SWV.

  8. THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTELY RULING MY LIFE RIGHT NOW.

It's like if The Weeknd and Drake had vocal talent/talent of any kind.

^Hellllll yes. Been loving that since it came out. Melanie is great.

  10. The Weeknd has great vocal talent!

    That song is brilliant, though.

  11. I don’t deserve this life...
    I’d make the perfect wife...

    I love Raphael Saadiq.

  13. Jennifer Hudson - Think Like A Man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxjPSjruF0Q

is currently my jam, THIS is the kind of thing she should have been doing last year instead of crappy Alicia Keys disco leftovers.

  14. She is indeed!

I'm glad this thread is here, it'll be nice to expand my horizons a bit and I love some of the stuff mentioned here already.

  15. Yes! Finally some collective R&B appreciation. I'm actually gonna jack some of these links and have a field day, when I'm done, I wanna contribute! Yeeeeee

  16. I love this song. Melanie is really underrated.

  17. Nice to see so much love for '4.A.M'. It's so powerful and although it's far from her usual style, it's my favourite Melanie Fiona song!

I also love Estelle's 'Thank You' at the moment. One of her best songs.

  18. Jhene Aiko has some fantastic songs. Someone recommended I check out her mixtape way back when it came out, I downloaded it and never listened to it. 'Stranger' is absolutely stunning and 'You Vs. Them' and 'Higher' are very good. Her voice is a lot like Cassie's except actually strong (not to slate Cassie though!).

She really adopted the Drake/ Weeknd/ etc. sound well, and it sounds so good with her voice. I hope she classes it up with her material this year and sticks to songs like 'Stranger', because some of the mixtape verged to close to basic and "ghetto" sounding.

But yeah, listen to this if you haven't, it's so so so good: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KZMhmW9K5o
