Girl Bands in the 'pop' heyday

Was this also the week Gary Barlow was due to be released?
yeah and BBMak

Not 100% sure that Gary Barlow single was legit, since the full artwork for another single called Arms has been released since. The promo single on Wikipedia of Lie To Me has always looked fake to me.

Hmm would this have been an aborted first single? Just the small print references a website launch in July and it coming from a forthcoming album called Stronger Now?

I think the designer said it was going to be the 3rd. I can't find the Insta it was on now.

I guess sometimes labels would prepare multiple potential singles in advance? Gary said in a podcast recently the album had been finished for ages before it came out but they kept tweaking things to keep various people happy.

Do people really think Thunderbugs second single would have smashed if it had been another week in January? I think they might have limped into the low 20s, high teens at the very most. I like the song but it goes nowhere and radio wouldn't have backed it even if the new release competition wasn't quite as strong. And the result with the label would have been the same given the money that had been sunk. I think @aquaplex alternative chart placing history is how I see it unfolding, although I'm still not sure they'd have got a third single.

Another interesting chart oversatured release week was 11 March 2000 when you had Madonna American Pie being released at short notice and leading 6 new entries in the top 10 (7 if you count Vengaboys climbing from outside the top 75), and 16 (or 17) total in the top 40.

Bonkers sales figures that week. Madasun and Northern Line sold enough to go top 10 most weeks and went in at 14 and 15. Would 9 and 10 have changed their career trajectory? Would Mariama have stuck it out of Honeyz had gone top 4 as their sales would ordinarily have achieved? What people remember who the Dum Dums were if they hadn't just missed the top 20?

A ridiculously competitive chart week that was.

I think in a less competitive week, it could have at least got to between 17-22. They just really threw them out to slaughter releasing it when they did - they really stood no chance.

I never knew about this! Poor Northern Line - it probably was their only chance for a top ten!
