Girl Bands in the 'pop' heyday

He/Him
Happy 25th birthday to one of the best debut tracks from a UK Girl Group ever.

Still adore this track. I’ll never forget hearing it for the first time and loving it pretty much immediately, I think it was on some Saturday/Sunday Morning show like Live & Kicking or Fully Booked where they performed it.

I find it fascinating how the Made in London album was seemingly pulled within a week or two of its release. Reviews were already out and yet the plug was pulled.

I guess the label was questioning if it would even chart after “Shut Your Mouth” squeaked in at #74. The Madasun album charted abysmally low and they were due the same week.

Apart from the two singles, there was only a few songs left that were decent. ‘I’m Not’, ‘Ain’t Another Love Song’, and ‘Believe’, being the best of the bunch.

It was all ok and nice, but nowhere as good as say Precious’ album, which was ‘all killer no filler’.

Were there other UK/Irish Girl Group launches in 1997 besides the following:

N-Tyce
All Saints
Vanilla
First Class

I know Solid Harmonie launched in 1997, but their UK launch wasn’t until 1998.

And Cleopatra started opening for Louise in late 1997 before their debut single.

There was an Irish girl band called Chill, that I think were on the Smash Hits tour in 1997. They didn't release anything though. Not sure if you'd count that

How does this happen? Getting onto the Smash Hits Tour would have been a huge investment in money and effort, and to then not even get a single out? Was the audience feedback that terrible that the label pulled the plug?

Liz Bonnin was a member. They did do a track on Dustin The Turkey's album (ha!)

Polydor said "We haven't received the right kind of single from Chill yet and we currently have no plans to release anything from them."

Pretty interesting Backstreet Boys meets En Vogue sound. Sounds like it episode been a banger if officially released.

Ok let’s try 1998 when the boom took off. So far I have:

Solid Harmonie
Cleopatra
B*Witched
Honeyz
Paperdolls
Kleshay
Fierce

Also, does anyone have the Solid Harmonie album release dates for Continental Europe (NL/Germany??), Japan, and the UK?

Thanks for posting this! I always wondered what happened to Chill. They look(ed) and sound(ed) good.
With a bit of tweaking (the melody) I think it would have been good enough to release.
