Girls Aloud

I'm not a massive fan of Control Of The Knife but it is a bit ahead of its time with all that electro swing stuff going on in it, who knows, maybe it could have done relatively well.

Love the Control of the Knife love. I adore it even though the vocoder vocals kinda put me off.

I usually skip 'I'm Falling' and 'Crocodile Tears' but for me Tangled Up is probably their most stellar album (with Neighbours and Chemistry close 2nd!). I've warmed to Out of Control over the years so the only album I don't have much love for is the debut - although that houses incredible singles.

As much as I wish the Tangled Up singles run had been longer, I honestly think they went with the perfect single run commercially. Sexy could only have been a lead single; that was either starting the campaign or it wasn't being released at all. And it absolutely deserved to be forced on the public. Call The Shots and Can't Speak French were both huge and were released in the correct order even if I don't personally care for the latter.

Extending the singles run beyond Can't Speak French probably requires pushing Out of Control back to 2009 and I really don't know if the girls would have been willing to release an album in that year given what was going on at the time. The stars might not have aligned for The Promise to have such a moment a year later either.

I find Can't Speak French far too repetitive, it runs out of ideas after the first verse/chorus, Girl Overboard was the obvious single choice there.

I wondered how it would flow with a 2nd verse being the same melody as the first verse with Cheryl, Sarah or Nicola. Then the Cheryl verse being the middle 8th.

I love Can’t Speak French, I think it makes a lot of sense as a single because that way the three singles were very sonically different, I feel like it amplifies the chances of people finding something they like and buying the album. Girl Overboard and Close To Love are perfect album tracks but they would have followed Call The Shots’ sound a little too much.

Tangled Up is perfect for me even with Damn!

We also gotta have a moment for the impeccable art direction, I adore how sleek the single jackets are, a shame about the standard album cover but I’ve grown to love it, it works as a centerpiece with the singles around it (that’s how I had them displayed on my music shelf once)

I didn't become a fan until the late 2010s, so my perspective is a little different, but "Can't Speak French" always made sense to me as a single. Plus, it's one of those tracks I truly find the radio mix superior, it's even my "album version" now.

I would've loved a fourth single, though. That I can get behind!
