Girls Aloud

I'm wondering if they would have been released as singles in the end, if there would have been new single mixes for Close To Love and Girl Overboard.
I had a theory that because their original versions were so good, there was no room to improve them, and that's why they weren't released as singles.
This is in contrast to Can't Speak French, which got a single version that improved it significantly.

Weren't there rumors years back of a radio version of Girl Overboard having been commissioned? I vaguely remember it being suggested that that version of the song is what ended up being used for the Fling My Soul Overboard mashup that first surfaced as a part of the WeLovePop podcast.

At the time, I was desperate for Girl Overboard to be the third single, but in hindsight Can't Speak French was the right choice to broaden their GP appeal. When I'm in the UK, it's definitely the song of theirs that I hear played most frequently, along with The Promise. Control of the Knife would be my choice for fourth single and I still find it WILD that Tangled Up was their first studio album campaign not to go four singles deep.

My headcanon is whatever instrumental version of Close to Love that plays on the Tangled Up Tour DVD menu was the original mix and then that remixed that up to what we got on the album, I don’t think you could beef it up any more, its perfect

I genuinely forgot how that goes and can’t access the DVD but is it close to any of the “Alternative” mixes on YouTube?

Whilst Tangled Up is their slickiest album, Chemistry is where they went ‘fuck it, let’s really establish our sound’ and it’s brilliant.

I also love the fact that it’s their lowest selling album and yet they add random album tracks from it for their subsequent tours.

1. Chemistry
2. Tangled Up
3. Neighbours
4. Out of Control
5. Debut

See that's what's ''bothering'' me about their career. They introduced their sound and image with ''Neighbors'', they established them with ''Chemistry'' and then they toned it down and polished it with the other two albums (with a few exceptions).

Now, of course ''Tangled Up'' and ''Out of Control'' have some of my favorite songs from them, but I can't help but wonder how would their unhinged songs sound if they kept that going. Maybe something like JADE's songs...

Wouldn't change a thing. I feel even on Tangled Up some of the more Chemisty sounding songs (some being actual leftovers) already sound a bit 'I heard this already'. Wouldn't give up a Call The Shots or Untouchable for albums sticking to more of the same. Never knowing what would come next was part of their dna as much as any defined sound. Plus it's not like with songs like Sexy and Miss You Bow Wow it was ever completely gone anyway

I hear you and I respect it. And I did say we had some exceptions hahaha. It's just a ''what if'' scenario in my head. ''The Loving Kind'' is still in my Top 3.

There was an alternative version of Girl Overboard too, but sadly got wiped off I think
See, I thought so. Thanks for confirming I didn’t dream that up.

I wouldn’t call Tangled Up “toned down” when it houses “Sexy!”, “I’m Falling”, and “Fling” whereas WWTNS only really only had “Graffiti My Soul” and maybe “Wake Me Up” and Chemistry had no really out there songs aside from “Swinging London Town”, (and “Biology” was more quirky than bombastic). In terms of their media presence/image though, absolutely as they had laminated their media training by then.

Which makes the title Out of Control ironic as that would imply the album would be full on, balls to the wall, “crazy”.

Naaahh, Chemistry is full of quirky, fun songs (well, except the ballads). Wild Horses starts with a chant and has Nicola doing woo-woo train noises for heaven's sake hahaha.

Fair, but then TU also has quirky moments with “Black Jacks”, “Can’t Speak French”, “Control of the Knife”, AND IF YOU TELL ME WHAT THE HELL I SHOULD REALLY DO and “Damn”.

I just don’t think “toned down” and Tangled Up belong in the same sentence, unless that sentence is:
“OOC is the only toned down album compared to [the other four]”.
