Gladiators Reboot (BBC)

It annoyed me too that a brand new contender came in at this stage of the competition which seemed unfair. But he was a good contender. The switch of Duel made no sense either.

The female Gladiators trying to ham it up on Gauntlet when they’re not very good at it. I’d imagine there was a degree of producer input to make that happen, but still.

Got to see more of Electro tonight and I have to say I wasn’t overly impressed.

Top episode, though.

Bionic on Duel was very strange, he just stood there. Presumably that was shoulder injury related, although why put him up for it in that case.

At least Electro made a better individual debut than Athena last week. She's just not bringing anything, bless her.

Viper needs to go at the end of the season.

Gauntlet is a shambles for the women really. But then it was the same in the old seasons most contenders got through pretty quickly from memory?

Two fantastic eliminators though. Great effort from Finlay to close that gap. Surely he'll be fastest loser.

I think most female contenders made it through in the original gauntlet from memory but quite often after 20 seconds so got 5 points rather than 10. There were exceptions, though.

I agree that Finlay will be back for the semis.

I am enjoying this series and am making sure I watch live every week but, with the exception of a few, the Gladiators just don’t engage me the same way the originals did in series 1-3. They just seemed more diverse and had more personality. I rewatched a few episodes after tonight’s quarter final, including the Gladiators Champions, and was just hooked the entire time. It’s possible that I was just far more drawn in at the time because of my age at the time, and the nostalgia factor that creeps in when watching it back now. I do like her but I’m not even that fussed on Sabre- I actually think Fury is a lot better. What I did think worked well tonight was having Viper play off against another Gladiator- it came off funnier with Nitro acting almost like his handler. Got to agree about Steel- he is beautiful, as are Nitro and Phantom. Easily as sexy as Saracen was back in the day.

What was with Bronte’s Gauntlet tonight? Was that some kind of grudge or just for the shits and giggles?

Yeah I was a bit puzzled with the women's gauntlet tonight? It just felt out of place for all the Gladiators since none of them have acted like that before?

Am surprised they didn't use a runner up from previous games instead of introducing a new contenders? Odd.

The eliminator rounds were all amazing to watch and so close!

Viper needs more than just grunting and scowling. It's really one note. Legend has nailed it for the villian.

I thought it was pretty much accepted that anytime the Glads act out or go against the rules, it's a pre-agreed and practiced thing?

For the Gauntlet, I assumed they'd just been told that both women were going to complete it but for the 2nd round they were to rebel because they were annoyed at being beaten so easily.

Totally agree that it was unfair to bring in a new competitor when there were already men who probably narrowly missed out on having the fastest runner up time. That just seemed really off.

Both Eliminators were absolutely spectacular tonight. I was gutted for Fin but surely he'll be the fastest runner up. He smashed it.

And Legend is still best character.

The thing I like about Sabre is she has built up a personality, she completely owns her character.

One of the things that bothered me with the very first series was, whilst Shadow came across as the leader of the male Glads, there was never any female equivalent, not until series 3 Nightshade.

Whereas I feel Sabre really fills that roll, I could easily see her as the leader of the female Glads.

It is a shame though, the new male Glads seems a lot more fleshed out than the women.
Athena, Fire, Electro and Comet (because of injury) just feel so much more in the background compared to Sabre, Fury, Diamond and Dynamite.

They definitely go easy on Gauntlet this time. I'd need to go back and watch some of the older ones again, but I have memories of contestants being absolutely thrown over the sides.

Oh and regarding women's Gauntlet, 17 ladies were shut out from scoring any points between domestic series 3-6, not counting Internationals or the 1993, 1998/1999 series.

Can always rely on you to give us the stats, thank you!

The producers definitely have their favourites and in the female team it’s obvious who it is. Dynamite is proving to be better than I thought if I’m honest. Hopefully we’ll see more of her, Athena and Electro to gauge their abilities.

Yeah Sabre, Fury, Diamond and Dynamite are the main 4 for the women. No question. Diamond being easily the most physically imposing of them. But I do think that Sabre has embodied her role the most and is playing along with the contestants and the crowd the best.

I feel like I'm obligated to support her because the gym she owns is a couple of minutes round the corner from me, so it's nice to support a local lass. She's also had a difficult journey, involving domestic abuse, so it's good to see her thriving.

Yeah it’s funny re the female Glads back in the day. I always felt Jet and Lightning came across as the most talented, popular in the earlier seasons, though neither seemed to fit the role of leader- Jet was always the friendly girl next door who excelled at everything. I never saw Nightshade as the leader either, more like the secret weapon who would mess things up on the more combative challenges. Despite the fact that she was never that good, Panther was actually the female I most saw as the lead, I always found her quite magnetic (even though Scorpio was actually my favourite!)

It definitely felt like an odd choice to have a newcomer come in at the quarter final. When there would be four losing heat contestants who could have had a second chance.

I hope this isn't something they repeat.

Also Barney saying after the men's Eliminator, we haven't seen a photo finish like that before. When we'd just seen it on the ladies.

Don't know if the men's was shot first, but aired second. Or if he meant just in the men's but it was an odd editing choice to leave it in.

I might be wrong here, but I'm sure I remember hearing that Panther was supposed to be the female leader in the first series, but was injured training in Duel with Shadow, and so couldn't appear as much as planned.

I'm amazed Viper made it to the screen considering how closely he aligns with the mute angry Asian stereotype, and then you add stuff like his 'secret weapon' being hypnotism...
