Gospel/Christian Music

Two excellent Christian rock bands are Delirious? (they of Deeper - #20 in 1997 - but much more besides) and Jars Of Clay.

I also like a lot of Michael W. Smith's work (US christian Richard Marx-type who was huge in 1990/91 over there, but continues to record and perform prolifically).

Kim Burrell has one of the best voices in music today. I love the rawness combined with the power and runs she can do.

Mary Mary's material is better though. 'Homecoming Glory' off their latest is sublime.

Zoegirl did a fine job of mixing the 2000s girlgroup "thing" with Christian music
Scream
watch
is their most emo, "Here and now" is probably their best uptempo one.

I second the love for Stacie Orrico, she has a great voice. Apart from "Stuck" (the Dallas Austin single) and "I promise" (the Diane Warren song) on the first album, virtually everything is solidly Christian. Let's face it, "more to life" is an anthem for our anti-capitalist times.

Of various Christian singer/songwriters in the sort of shoegazing college rock style that seems to dominate America, I love Phil Wickham's stuff. But forget the great man's original, here's an amazing cover I found on youtube:

Kathryn Scott's "I belong" and "Hungry" always inspire me.

My favourite is still the "Room to Breathe" album. Reason to Live, Scream, The Way you love me, so many amazing songs.

That reminds me, apparently Alisa from Zoegirl's solo album is supposed to be good, I must pick it up soon.

I dislike Michael W. Smith quite intensely, he's like Jesus' Flo-Rida or Pitbull or something.

The Newsboys are also great and of relatively similar vein. What do you think of Hillsong ?

Trin-i-Tee 5:7's first album is so classic!

Their first three albums are all fantastic! Seriously, very lush vocals and production, very on-point and solid throughout, all killer no filler. Their debut is probably my least favourite, it's very classic but didn't age very well, whilst songs like "Here 4 U", "Holla", "My Body", "Get Myself Together" sound just as fresh to me today as they did back then.

I used to love them but nowadays I find their material quite hit-and-miss. To me it's like they're torn between mainstream and "church" audience, and feel somewhat uncomfortable or "sell-out" when in the mainstream, so they repeatedly mess things up. Following up "Shackles" and "I Sings" with "Can't Give Up Now" and "Wade In The Water"? I mean, really? There's hundreds of artists doing that, but there was no one else really positioned to do what they did with Shackles. "I Got It" could've smashed hard.

And then the same thing again with their second album, "In The Morning" was ok, but then instead of "He Said" or "Hold On" we get "I Try" with no video or anything. By the third album they'd aged considerably and become so church matronly that them having "Shackles"-like appeal was no longer a possibility. Recently we had "God In Me" become a hit and even then, shitty video and shitty follow-up single stop the whole campaign dead in the tracks.

I agree, Stacie's second album was (for me) absolutely flaw-free. Very solid and consistent throughout, not repetitive, not boring, not gimmicky, very rich lyrically, vocally, musically. "I Could Be The One", "Strong Enough", "Maybe I Won't Look Back", "That's What Love's About"....urgh, so many great songs.

I also have major love for Superchic[k] and their remix album. The Red Pill Remix of "Hero" is EVERYTHING. So melodramatic.

Mary Mary - Shackles (Praise You)
Kim Dexter - Reaching
Lincoln Brewster - Everlasting God
Switchfoot - Dare you to move
Kelly Rowland - You will win
Tye Tribbett & GA - No Way
DMX - Lord give me a sign
Amy Grant - Lucky one
Desperation Band - Make a way (feat. Jon Egan)
Todd Dulaney - The Anthem (Radio Edit)
Eternal - Amazing grace
Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day

I don't know if it's technically labelled as gospel or CCM, but thematically it is.
Puff Daddy - Best Friend
Stacie Orrico - (There's Gotta Be) More To Life
Prince - Holy River

The lack of Amy Grant in this thread (however short it is) is appalling.

She mentions in the DVD commentary for this video that when it was made, she held the records for both the world's longest dress and the world's biggest dress (at 1:10 and 3:02, respectively). They had to have several people holding down the red one so she didn't fly away, and she stood on a ladder to wear the green one. Appalling video overall, but an amazing song.

I'm not even religious but this is sublime and slays my soul and my existence every single time.
