Grey's Anatomy Universe

It’s a real shame as I loved Alex’s character growth, particularly going from the intern furthest from Meredith to her closest friend on the show. Seeing their relationship develop over the years was heartwarming to watch.

Having said all that, major props to Justin for prioritising his mental health and getting the help he needed. I hope Grey’s will have him back at some point, even just as a guest spot to provide some closure and to put his face to the resolution.

The only new scene is the sisters hugging during the Meredith toast scene.

My curiosity for the episode continues to grow the closer we get. I’m just so intrigued because I wonder how they’re going to do this. Either it’s going to really be as simple (and underwhelming) as just showing Meredith’s last day at Grey Sloan, wrapping up the Mernick story and seeing her leave Seattle. Sort of like Jackson’s exit episode after the April episode. OR her last day at the hospital will just be a chunk of the episode and they’re going to give her a Cristina-esque exit where we see the beginnings of her new life in Boston.

I’m ready!! Only 9 days left.

"more than my biological sisters"... Lexie says hallo from the heavens above...
When they started talking about Mer exit, it was clear she was not leaving the show and the episodes were limited, but not that much limited. Then, around Nov, everything escalated and got overdramatic.
Now she says she's leaving for a while and that she'll be back and that she'll be in one episode later this season.
Saying
It’s a little bit of a trick they’re playing on people.”
won't help, tho', even if ABC has always been trickery in promos
btw, I'm kinda sick of it all, air this next episode, let's say goodbye to Mer and MOVE ON, please !

Jo is in the toast scene (far left)!! We won. The kids are in it too

Hah, I was trying to spot her in the promo. Their first shared scene since 16x18! Unless we count Jo talking to the Meredith dummy in early season 17 ddd. I'm happy they got the whole cast together.

In retrospect, it's still sad and a bit confusing that we never got a Meredith/Jo scene discussing Alex leaving. Or literally anything else. They were so great together in season 14 and 15.

The first post-Meredith era press releases are here. Some very minor spoilers...

19x08 - All Star - Teddy makes a challenging decision. Meanwhile, Maggie and Winston aren’t on speaking terms, and Link leans on Jo for emotional support as he preps for a surgery on a well-known athlete. Simone and Lucas are surprised by an unlikely visitor.

19x09 - Love Don't Cost a Thing - Simone is met with a life-changing decision upon the return of someone from her past. Blue shadows Maggie on a risky procedure, while Jo and Link tend to a pregnant woman. At the intern house, Lucas and Mika throw a party filled with surprises.

We have confirmation that the interns will be moving in together, which I think is a great move. I have a feeling they're gonna take Mer's house like many of us originally suspected.

Do the actresses hate each other or something?

Do the actresses hate each other or something?

There was speculation of that because it seemed weird that they didn't share scenes for so long, but then on two occasions they were spotted together behind-the-scenes. First standing side-by-side and then chatting at the 400th episode celebration and then hugging on the red carpet at the People's Choice Awards. So it kind of seems like maybe COVID protocols just divided them into different filming blocks (this was common especially in season 17; many actors never crossed paths). But it seemed strange that they didn't share a single scene still in season 18 or so far on 19, because Ellen has had at least a scene or two with every other actor.

Promo pics for the first post-Meredith episode are out now and you can see Simone and Lucas in the intern house foyer, looks like it’s still being repaired -

Really not sure what the purpose of the fire was if this was the story they were going to do anyway. Like I said before, maybe just an excuse to redo the house. My guess is Simone, Lucas and Mika are the three that are going to be living it full time.

They always hype the mid-season premiere, I think we'd all be let-down if they didn't promote it extensively. Plus, it's Ellen's final episodes as a series regular - it deserves to feel big. But I also think the promos have made it clear that it isn't some big disaster episode and they're not promising to shock us. Meredith deserves a happy, celebratory send-off, and it looks like that's what we'll get.

Super mixed feelings about last night's episode. It wasn't nearly as nostalgic/celebratory as I thought, which I KIND of get, because the 400th episode felt more like Meredith's swan song, with the 7 episodes so far this season feeling more like... an epilogue for her? And I get that they wanted to leave it open-ended because she'll be back, but it was still lacking a BIG moment, especially between Bailey/Richard/Mer. And I just find the way they handled Nick/Mer so confusing this year. Like the "I Pick Me!" moment was very symbolically full circle, but it also felt like... Nick has been largely so great to her? I wish they'd just given them a happily ever after. I wonder if he's still gonna be at the hospital for a while now? That confused me.

Otherwise, it felt much more like a 'pass the torch' episode than a 'goodbye' episode, which is maybe why Ellen cautioned "This isn't my last episode!" in the media last week. It felt a lot more like they were trying to show the audience that the show could go on without Meredith, setting up a bunch of the interns' dynamics (I had a feeling Mika/Helm was coming, and I'm KIND of into it?!) and giving big moments to Amelia, Maggie/Winston, Teddy, etc.

As a mid-season premiere, I thought it was strong and showed a lot of promise for what's to come. As a "farewell" to Meredith, it was lacking... though, perhaps because it isn't her true "farewell" just yet.

Promo for next week confirms Amelia is throwing her hat in the race for Chief...

To start, I really do get why they wrote her exit the way they did. In fact, if you go back in this thread to when they announced Ellen would only be in 8 episodes, I had been adamant that she wasn't going to get a proper 'exit' episode (hell, I even thought she would probably still even be holding a position at the hospital) because I knew she was still going to be doing the VoiceOver (sidenote - I'm glad they threw in the bit where she said "I'm still here" in her VO when she was reading the book to sort of indicate that her VO's will continue).

However, that was also when I was still assuming she would sign on for another 5-8 episodes in season 20, it was also before Ellen officially announced her departure as a regular with tons of goodbyes from the cast and crew, it was also before ABC marketed the hell out of this episode as a "farewell". So this episode to me, and to other fans judging from comments sections literally everywhere, felt like a slap in the face to longtime fans.

This very clearly was Ellen Pompeo and Meredith Grey's exit episode. And we got absolutely nothing. Her lack of screen time was the first thing I noticed. We were 40 minutes into the episode and had seen her for a total of 7 minutes, maybe. There was absolutely no 'bigness' to the story. Leaving Seattle and GSM is a huge moment for this character - we had an entire season about it last year, and it's finally happening and we didn't get a single poignant moment to mark the end of her time there. No conversation between Meredith and Richard/Bailey. Not even a scene of her walking around the hospital. It's baffling, really. We've continued to see Jackson and Koracick the same way we'll see Meredith, but they had better exits than this.

The storyline with Nick was absolutely ludicrous. I appreciated the full circle Pick Me Choose Me Love Me moment in the scrub room, but the whole thing just feels like it came out of nowhere. Her pretending not to hear him on the plane was so off-putting to me too. Who does that? It didn't feel empowering or like growth to me, it felt like a serious regression of her character.

Overall, the issue with the episode was that it did absolutely nothing to serve and honour Meredith's character and the things happening in her life. And that's the reason I'm sort of let down after ~17 years of watching this. And to be honest, I thought I would have egg on my face with my previous comments about this being my last episode, but I actually have zero desire to return (and won't be). It's been fun though!
