Grey's Anatomy Universe

I really liked this episode. They've been doing a good job of making things feel very connected rather than everyone just existing in their own bubbles. Jo is good example - she had her own story with Link, but she was also pulled into Yasuda's storyline and into Ben's. That's the kind of subtle storytelling that makes the show stronger - it feels less like a show about a bunch of doctors who happen to work at the same hospital and more about about a group of surgeons with genuine connections. I'm so glad they got Jo and Ben in a scene together as soon as he returned. I already like the Ben/Kwan dynamic, too.

Yasuda's storyline is great. Midori is doing such a good job, and I love how supportive the other interns have been. Subtle moments like Simone making the heart sign at her at the beginning and then them all showing up with flowers and gifts at the end were so cute. And Jules is really breaking my heart - she wants to be there for her so badly. I loved her showing up to hold Yasuda's sister's hand.

I guess Levi is going to leave to see the world? Based on the promo for next week he may have a near-death experience, so that may hurry it along.

I think getting to focus on smaller groups of characters each episode has actually been a strength in the first few episodes this season - the stories feel more focused, and the ones we're focused on (Jules/Yasuda, Levi, Catherine/Mer) have been moving at a good pace and feel properly fleshed out.

My only nitpick this week is how casually they mentioned that Catherine is fine dd. It makes me wonder what Mer's storyline will be when we see her again. Where does it leave her relationship with the foundation and her research? Will anything actually come of her illness, or was it just a way to get Bailey & Mer back into her good graces?

No, because Owen is needed every time the writers want to SAY SOMETHING ABOUT MASCULINITY, and the showrunners love Kevin and Kim the actors. Yes, their characters have been in a rut for two seasons in a row. No, I don't see that changing any time soon.

Yeah, what the actual...they've become absolute wallpaper the last few seasons. I thought they worked well for the first little while when they brought back Teddy because it was an interesting dynamic and there was a certain novelty to seeing an old character come back, but jeeeez.

Here's more of the same old complaints from me:

-I have serious issues (which I've talked about on here before) with JoLink and their entire story. The twins thing is sooo sitcom-y. Like WHY. I also don't understand why they literally never get any storylines outside of their relationship/each other. Jo has spent more time on the show than Cristina and Derek now, can she get something a bit meatier? I still think her leaving surgery was a terrible and limiting decision story-wise.
-I find Winston almost unbearable, he's so bitter and rude in every single episode. Like a modern day Hahn.
-It's sad that when Levi's storyline is finally getting interesting, he's leaving. They've opened up so many doors for his exit (love interest, research opportunity, desire to travel?) that I don't know what exactly they'll go with but I'm very sad to be losing him...
-LOVE that Ben is back, actually...and Bailey is the only legacy character that's still very interesting to me overall
-I'm enjoying the interns too! I do think out of the four that'll remain, Simone is the weak link. It's insane that three seasons in though, they still feel new and don't have fully formed relationships with each other, etc. Like does anyone know what the relationship between Mika and Simone is like? Or Mika and Blue? Jules and Lucas? This is where bad writing and character building comes in. Name any two MAGIC characters, and you know exactly what their dynamic with each other was, etc.
-No notes on Amelia, she continues to be the one flawless character, and I love Monica.

All of that being said, I'm really enjoying the show this season ddd. It's WAY better than last year and I think not having all the regulars in every episode has only helped the pacing.

I think Levi is moving to Texas. And I'm very sorry about it ! And I quite like the chaplain, too. I want them to stay.
Jo and Link are the funny part, now. So, they make us laugh... more or less. Once was Owen & Teddy.
Owen and Terry: i know writers love them and the acto4rs are great, but they are going nowhere. They are hamsters going on and on and on and on. They relly need a big shake up. BIG.
Winston is like a big, bad bear. He had an affair with Monica ? That lingerie scene was just... pointless.
I can't really stand the 2 inters I should root for. I really can't ! Can't stand him last season, can't stand him now. Writes want so much to make them lovable, but I just can't ! The others are a bit more interesting.

Overall, I really, really liked the first 3 episodes (ep 2 eas so good!) and I wasn't prepared for it ! I have very high expectations for this season, now.

I was wondering if they'd spare another intern getting killed off, but Grey's tropes will always trope. Super sad for Jules though.

THURSDAY, MARCH 6
8 pm 9-1-1 (midseason premiere)
9 pm Doctor Odyssey (midseason premiere)
10 pm Grey’s Anatomy (midseason premiere)

I think they've had a really strong start to the season, and I'm excited about the next two episodes before the long break. As much as I hate to say goodbye to Yasuda, I'm low-key glad that it looks like we'll be getting a big, traumatic emotional arc for the interns. If she does end up dying after last week's cliffhanger, I think it will be a pretty great storyline for Jules. I'm surprised tonight isn't the mid-season finale. It seems like they're going to pretty significantly shake things up before mid-season, which is fun.

I'm glad Levi is getting a nice send-off. His scene with Helm last week was cute, and I loved that they got him in his navy attending scrubs for a night. It highlighted his growth so much. I wonder if tonight is his last episode?

I liked getting Jo & Amelia scenes last week (more of those, please!) but I hated what an asshole Link was to Jo at the end. She's talking being abandoned, and instead of comforting + reassuring her, he gets his panties in a twist and walks away? Gross. I hope they move past this rough patch quickly and it involves lots of apologizing from Link for being a complete tool.

Monica + Amelia need to happen already. Like, yesterday. I think they've spent a good amount of time focusing on Levi and Yasuda in these first several episodes, so once they exit, it will open more time to give arcs to Amelia, Meredith, etc. through the second half of the season.

I have genuinely no idea where the Teddy & Owen arc is headed. Zero. What is going on there?!

Literally every character that’s left in the last few years has come back here and there, except Deluca and Alex for obvious reasons. I’m sure he’ll pop in and out.

Grey's wraps the first half of the season as the #6 network show in the key demo with 7 days of VOD + streaming included. It's a huge jump from its live viewers, which I assumed would happen given the move to 10 o'clock. It proves what the ABC boss said when the move was announced, which is that they can put it anywhere on the schedule and fans will follow it. Interestingly, the new Ryan Murphy show they gave its old slot to isn't in the top 10...

Also, I'm surprised there was no discussion about the mid-season finale here! Midori Francis was incredible and her work was so heartbreaking. I'm gonna miss Mika, and especially her relationship with Jules. I love that they gave her a big, dramatic exit arc, though. It'll be interesting to see what they plan to do with Jules now? Adelaide has been really great in the last few episodes, too. Ultimately, as sad as it is, I think this shakeup will be good for the interns.

It doesn't return until March 6th and the promo kind of has me shook that Jo might actually lose the twins?

I waited until all 8 episodes were available here in the UK and binged them. It’s been good, I still like it but not as obsessed as I used to be.

Catherine really bugs me and Ben being back as a doctor AGAIN is just ridiculous. And surely it’s time for Richard’s retirement to actually become a reality?

With the ratings they're still getting, Richard is going to be in that hospital until he's 87 dd.

I'm excited for the back half of this season. The writing has been strong, and typically the seasons get better as they go. A lot of time had to be devoted to giving proper exits to Levi and Mika (rightfully so), so it'll be nice to see some more story spread out for other characters. Amelia and Monica need to get some proper focus, and I'm interested to see where they're taking this Jo/Link storyline. We also have Meredith and Nick for at least 4 out of the 10 remaining episodes.

It also feels like they've hit their stride writing for the interns. I hope they use the convenience store callback to how Lucas' grandpa died as an opportunity to dive into Lucas' family (introduce his damn mother!) and get back into the bond between him and Amelia. It'd be fun to see Amelia embracing Simone and lean into that whole family dynamic a bit more.

Tedious doesn't even begin to describe Owen and Teddy, but I have to admit I absolutely hollered at the shot where the elevator door opened and Sophia Bush had her hand on Teddy's shoulder.
