I do feel like Martyrs and other solid French Extremity films are much higher quality than the likes of Hostel 2 (which disturbed me in a very...unpleasant way and made me feel like I needed to take a bath) and trash intended purely to shock like A Serbian Film (don't fucking Google this @constantino), the August Underground and Human Centipede movies, Megan Is Missing etc. Those can all be chucked in the garbage.

Well damn. I just read the synopsises of A Serbian Film and Martyrs and I really wish I hadn't. My fragile soul.

Saw "The First Omen' today and thought it was a great film.. totally above average compared to slot of the recent output ... Glad I saw it at the cinema... It looked beautiful.

But.

The trailer for Maxxxine stole my heart, my mind and my popcorn... It was GONE.

CANNOT WAIT.

The way my dumb ass googled all of these and proceeded to not sleep a wink last night...

Yep,

Which one do you prefer? THE FIRST OMEN or IMMACULATE?

I think The First Omen is a better movie then Immaculate but I prefer Immaculate a bit. It's more rewatchable, a bit camp and the ending is stronger then The First Omen's setting up another movie ending. Both are really solid though. We are kinda winning this year with horror minus dreck like Night Swim and Tarot although I kinda want to see it ddd

I love how the gorgeous cinematography of The First Omen has us all gagged. CINEMA is certainly not something you expect in a horror prequel, but cinema is what we got. Winking references to the original, a creeping sense of dread that was expertly paced, above par acting for a horror franchise...all I can say about Miss Damien is

And Immaculate's New French Extremity Light was also a pleasant surprise. That bonkers second act was excellent. The Guilty Catholics were spoiled this year! Religious trauma is storming the charts!

It also begs for a deeper conversation about how the horror genre reflects societal fears at the time. We mentioned torture porn last week, and there is a huge connection between torture at Guantanamo Bay dominating the news, along with wartime cruelty that aligned during that mid-2000s period.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Roe vs. Wade was repealed, women's rights are being challenged everywhere and forced pregnancy is a point of focus for the genre right now.

Anyways that's

Sincerely Tsunami.

Does anyone like The Mothman Prophecies? Not a perfect film and a bit preposterous at times, but it produced in me a really strong sense of millennial foreboding and wintery dread. It's really a slowburn cosmic horror about human tragedy rather than a creature feature. Bonus points for excellent Richard Gere and Laura Linney performances, and being part of the Christmas horror canon. Still thinking about it a few days later.

'Arcadian' was very good. It's A Quite Place on a budget but just as effective. I thought the creatures were very good too, a little more imagination than usual. Both young actors were great. It's simplicity was very welcome.
I thought it was entertaining and quite suspenseful, the creatures were effective and kind of creepy they can come from below, but maybe they were over designed. Shame the script wasn't strong (zero back story) and the dialogue was bland so the actors didn't have much to work with. It was good, but could have been great.

The thing that surprised me was...

That Nic Cage wasn't really the lead, the two twin twinks were. And the creatures were based on Disney's Goofy...

I need to rewatch it as I can't remember anything from it... But my aunt who saw it when it first came out couldn't stop laughing over one moment and she mock quote it for years.
"What's in my hand?"
"Chaaaaapstick"
