I'm sorry but Ari Aster is a hack and Midsommar is, without any exaggeration, one of the most dire portrayals of grief and mental illness I have seen on film. It's like if someone who was inspired by reading a Wikipedia article had made a movie. Every character is a cardboard with Florence just bawling the entire movie with no emotional breaks and the embarrassing tacked-on girlboss narrative being used as a promotional tactic to attract gay and female audiences... Hereditary has similar issues (including shoving every plot related info and symbolism that isn't outright revealed into the audience's faces like everyone is dumb) but it's at least engaging enough. Have zero interest in ever seeing Beau Is Afraid because I can already tell by the trailer it's going to be the most literal, least human interpretation of mommy issues imaginable.
Ti West you're next

I just watched Host for the first time since release and other than the trauma reminded of lockdown, it also holds up super well?

The director said something happens in the first three minutes, around when Jemma joins the call, that’s a clue to what’s going on. Does anyone know what it is?

Hold Your Breath (new Sarah Paulson one) was very similar to Never Let Go.

And just as average.

Time to watch VHS Beyond. Going to hold off on Salem’s Lot to see it in the cinema instead.

The new Salem's Lot has some of the weirdest pacing I've seen in a film. Not sure if it was cut the hell up by the studio in the 3 years since it's been made or if it's because Gary Dauberman is a hack (or both!). I did like the main little boy who was more smart, badass then anyone else and a few fun moments. This really should have been a one season show.

I’m planning on hosting a few horror movie marathons over the next few weeks, and want to select a few great double-features. What recommended pairings do you all have? Can be a film&sequel, or two films that complement each other (or don’t!).

Dog Soldiers / The Descent (same director, back to back)
Ready Or Not / You're Next (Survival)
The Shining / Dr. Sleep (sequel)
Halloween / Scream (stalker)
Single White Female / Fatal Attraction (Obsession)
Copycat / Identity (Cat & Mouse)
Sixth Sense / The Others (spooky)
Lady Vengence / The Audition (revenge)
Misery / What Lies Beneath (obsession)

Edited with type of film.

Allegedly the original version was 300 minutes. Idk if they shot a 300 minute film that was cut or it was cut in the script prior to shooting but…
