Horror films

Also re:The Substance…I had never seen Margaret in anything before but she was fantastic! As was Demi of course, both of them did a superb job (especially with minimal dialogue). The scene of Elisabeth obsessing over her makeup before going on the date was especially effective.

If you loved Margaret, I highly recommend watching Sanctuary. It’s more of a thriller/drama, but she’s simply incredible in it. My favorite performance of hers.

Watched MaXXXine finally and it was fun. Definitely unfortunate they didn't commit to the 80's slasher vibes the trailer led me to believe they would, but I enjoyed it.

I am now watching House of the Devil for the first time and who knew Greta Gerwig was such a bad actress! Wild. The first 30 minutes are excruciatingly boring, I pray things pick up.

Edit: its been an hour and only one moment of action has occurred ddddd.

The one thing I did like about this movie is the #aesthetic. I would love for more new filmmakers to make movies that look like they were made 40 years ago. It's just kinda refreshing in a way.

Two first time watches this week that may or may not be horror movies, depending on your definition…

Safe (1995)
Already my favourite film of 1995 despite some stiff competition. I was ENTHRALLED right from the David Lynch opening sequence (a compliment) - the whole thing is just about perfect - terror and ultimately sadness overcame me, Julianne Moore is awards-worthy, as is Peter Friedman (a cult-leader, a man desperate to replace his anger and sadness with light, sinister or simply misguided, doing good or doing harm - who can say? He kind of avoids easy labels!) Up there with Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven and Carol as another Todd Haynes masterpiece. Also pleasantly surprised to see April Grace (my favourite Supporting Actress of 1999 for Magnolia) in a small role. Amazon Prime in the UK.

Swallow (2020)
Maybe I’ve been subliminally influenced by all the stanning of The Substance here and sought out body horror without realising. A fucking great movie, Haley Bennett is perfection and Denis O’Hare is ASTOUNDING in an almost-cameo that made me remember that Ryan Murphy has amazing taste in actors (before he gives them sub-par material to try and elevate). I was sickened and terrified yet ultimately had a sense of relief and felt there was light at the end of the tunnel. 4player in the UK.

I’ve seen both referenced here before (I’ve been wanting to see Safe for about 20 years - WHY DID I LEAVE IT SO LONG!?) - thanks again everyone for keeping my “must watch this” list booked and busy.

Now for Black Narcissus this weekend, I hope…
Safe is one of my favourites ever. A singular experience. Julianne x Todd will always be the pairing of dreams.

Smile 2 was really good. Interested in where it goes if they make a 3rd one with the way it ended. I just saved The Skye Riley EP and will give it a listen later.

Terrifier 3 was wild of course but I really enjoyed this one. Gore on top of gore. I’m glad it works as another Christmas horror movie, we can always use more of those. Looking forward to the next part of the story.

I didn’t enjoy Smile 2 as much as I hoped. It was quite tense at the start, but I got bored of the jump scares by the end and just didn’t find it scary at all. It ended up being just too similar in formula to the first and one and too predictable for me. And I find hallucinations just a bit of a cop out in horror films sometimes. I also find the “everyone thinks woman is going crazy and nobody believes her” trope a bit tired. Naomi was really good in this regardless though.

I watched Margaux last night. It was silly but quite enjoyable, but I lost interest in the last 25 mins or so. Some of the CGI was terrible! I think it would have worked better without the initial opening scenes.

Mads on Shudder was pretty good. Pretty one-note without the one-take gimmick, but what a gimmick. The switch in characters helped break it up a bit too. The scene on the motorcycle was a thrill.

Watched Longlegs recently and honestly I'm obsessed with this

Fright Night Part 2 should have been iconic but unfortunately it comes off as messy and a bit of a slog. Weird to think it was the Menendez murders that led to it flopping and still not being available properly on DVD or Blu-ray.
