Horror films

The Spider Labyrinth was surprisingly good. Thankfully, there were not that many spiders in it. It had some nice/nasty practical effects near the end.

My only gripe was that the lead actor was incredibly distracting. He was so handsome!

So, I guess slight spoilers, what was everyone's favorite demon baby climax (since we've had so many this year nn) from The First Omen, Immaculate, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Alien: Romulus, and Azrael?

The last 30 minutes of Alien: Romulus were a HOOT and maybe one of my favorite climaxes in years so I'm partial to that one, but Immaculate's final scene also made me scream.

Woman of the Hour was not it for me minus the parking lot scene. The way the story was told was very frustrating and didn't work.
Meant to check this out last night but watched 'Don't Move' instead, which was competently made but very predictable, and i'm sure i'll forget I've seen this in a couple of days.

I liked Woman Of The Hour but it I think it thought it was more clever than it was.

Recent watches, Alien Romulus - Very enjoyable apart from the cast, a bit too tweeny for me.

Terrifier 3 - Great fun, not quite as much as the 2nd. A bit unnecessarily too long as well.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - was fine but most if it didn't work for me. It all felt a bit forced and elements added that were not needed whatsoever.

So, The Substance. It was definitely very stylish and not shy about wearing its influences on its sleeve (the sledgehammer Shining homage in the first five minutes and Also Sprach Zarathustra during the climax nn). I enjoyed it but I feel it made its point in the first hour and then kept on hitting the same note with increasing intensity without raising the emotional stakes beyond visual escalation. The last half hour of grotesquerie was fun in an FX showcase kind of way but a little gratuitous in the sense that it didn't offer real emotional catharsis. What I did enjoy though was the performances by Demi and Margaret. They didn't have much to play beyond the stereotype of "aging star" and "overzealous newcomer" but they went for it in ways I didn't expect, especially from Hollywood royalty like Demi. Give her the Golden Globe.

Personally, I feel like the key to enjoying it is treating it primarily like a gross out comedy. I found the satire to be a third wheel to that and not too interesting on its own (though it's surprisingly sympathetic to Elisabeth despite how bleak and mean-spirited the film is). The way it pushes the limits of what's acceptable for a mainstream movie even during the more tame scenes with the porn cinematography, exaggerated characters and setting (that are already caricatures to begin with) and absolutely deranged close-ups is far more intriguing. I can't remember the last time we had a movie similar to this. It's kind of a farce but also somehow done in good taste? Does that make any sense nn?

Yeah I get what you mean and it's definitely broad (I mean the main character is literally named Harvey) but I wish Demi got more to do than deteriorate. The Fly is an obvious reference point and the drama of that was so affecting. But as you said, this is more a dark satire that uses the language of body horror.

Immaculate ending is an absolute show stopper for me, but I enjoyed all of those endings.

Azrael was ok, but the “no dialogue” gimmick is too gimmicky for me that it ends up really distracting me (she won’t even scream?). The same gimmick distracted me in No One Will Save You last year too.

Yeh I thought it was fine and it was well shot by Anna Kendrick, but I was expecting something else.

Smile 2 was fucking excellent – probably my favourite horror of the year. Absolutely batshit crazy, fantastic VX and jump scares that actually worked. I’m usually a bit fatigued by jump scares because I can see them coming, but there were two in particular that got me so, so good.

Watched The Substance last night and loved it also. Managed to somehow avoid a majority of spoilers so the ending was a complete surprise for me, and I really didn’t expect it to take it there – I sat mouth agape for the entire final 15/20 minutes nn

I like to think it was tongue in cheek with serious messages involved, like everything felt like an extreme or excess e.g. the explicit sexual tones in the exercise, heightened sound effects, the close up shots, Harvey's explicit toxic character, Elisabeth binge eating, the mess, Sue excessively wanting more etc. Hence why the end bit is very OTT to make a point.

Seeing as we are in the middle of an Addison Raenaissance I decided to watch Thanksgiving last night.

I thought it was honestly such good fun, some really interesting kills and genuinely funny moments, it didn’t take itself TOO seriously and I guess the fact it pays homage so so many slashers makes the plot holes almost forgivable. Whilst I can see the throwbacks to 80’s slashers was the intention I really did get Scream more than anything which is my favourite horror franchise, sharing that ‘who dunnit’ vibe that elevates the enjoyment and makes sequels so much more engaging compared to an unkillable singular villain so hope they incorporate this into the sequel also.

The October streaming horror this year is pretty bang average. Most of VHS Beyond, Hold Your Breath, It’s What’s Inside, Don’t Move, Woman of the Hour were all nothing more than “fine”.

Smile 2 in cinemas is my favourite of the month. But it’s fallen dramatically from the first at the box office, so I’m guessing we won’t be seeing a Smile 3 anytime soon.

Going to see Brandy vs her mother in law in The Front Room later.

I really wasn't a fan of Smile 2. I found it way too repetitive and there were too many fake outs -

almost the entire final act was one big fake out. Lazy!

Had a fantastic time watching Lucio Fulci’s Zombi 2. The zombie vs. shark scene, the eye gouging, the main title theme outdoing our own BPGs, the creeping dread throughout, up to and including that final scene showing the banging on the other side of the door to the slow march across the bridge. Honestly, incredible filmmaking.

I'm seeing this in a couple of weeks' time where Fabio Frizi and his band will be playing the score live. So excited.
