Saw that Smile 2 is now on Paramount, so I'll be watching either tonight or this weekend, looking forward to it.

Was looking over what else Paramount has in the genre that I've heard decent things about. The Quiet Place series, the X trilogy, and the Orphan prequel (since I remember enjoying the first one years ago), are on my list too I think.

Girlies, what are some good thrillers from the past year year? Doesn't have to be in English. I love the more psychological/pulse racing end of things rather than full on blood and gore, but I'm pretty vers. Thank you!

I recently saw What You Wish For (2023) which I thought was great. Haven't seen it mentioned here. Started off a bit slow and I wasn't sure at first but when it got going I was gripped.

Not me rushing to make another fake name for another free Paramount trial to only find out Smile 2 isn’t streaming in the UK yet. The disappointment.

This is hard to find? It was on all of those cheapo 4-in-1 DVD sets for years.

I gave Arachnophobia a spin for the first time in years, it was so good. I'd forgotten how sharp the script was and how likeable the characters all are.

Finally got around to watching Darkness after putting it on the back burner. Wow, what an incomprehensible, butchered mess. Like, where's the build-up or the investigative part of the mystery? It's like scenes just... happen with no continuity. The scene of Anna Paquin digging through her dad's old childhood stuff intercut with her boyfriend developing the negatives... despite the fact that he should be currently driving her mother and brother to the hospital? I'm thrown off. And was this originally written in Spanish and then translated to English? The dialogue is so blunt and prosaic, and the exposition dumps are just awful. The last 20 minutes are a great hint at what this could have been - creepy and foreboding. Same for Lena Olin's performance. Her character is so cruel and confused, and there is some depth there despite the dialogue sounding so wooden. Too bad none of this is properly explored

Me reading the synopses of the original Speak No Evil and Funny Games on Wikipedia despite having zero desire to actually watch either

I find it a bit frustrating that Funny Games gets so much attention when Cache is so much more suspenseful and cinematic. Of all Michael Heneke’s films it’s my favorite, just incredibly tightly plotted and nerve wracking from beginning to end.

Throughly enjoyed Strange Darling. The twists & turns weren’t quite as gag-worthy as Barbarian, and it slightly dragged at certain points but everything else about it was fantastic. Loved the non-linear way the movie played out. Also, I’ve seen Kyle Gallner in movies before but this was the movie that made me realise how fantastic he is. I hope he keeps getting horror roles, he’s so good in them. Severely under utilised in Scream 5.

Kyle Gallner was great even in the small screen time he had in Smile 2.

The soundtrack really made it feel like Kill Bill meets Barbarian, for sure. The leading lady was superb. I'm a bit of tired of the GET A LOAD OF THIS!! twists as a storyline, though.

I enjoyed Smile 2 more than the first. I'd give this one a 9/9.5 and the first like an 8. I think Parker Finn really went for it and is a name to watch in future years for horror (if he continues to do this genre). I hear he is very excited to build on this start, so let's hope. Naomi Scott's performance..

I mean holy shit, I know the Wicked thread was having alot of calls for Oscars, while knowing how musicals are treated. If horror films weren't even more of a long shot, Naomi would be a major candidate. Just think about how much acting and choreography+song recording she had to do for the film. I hope she does more horror films in the future.

I never watched Truth or Dare (and heard it wasn't that good anyway) so I didn't know
the ending rips that off
. So that didn't bug me, I thought the idea was very creative. Also, I could see where someone who might not like multiple long sequences that are proven to be a figment of imagination/mental deterioration, then not being able to trust what is real or not real. But knowing full-well what this demon does to people, it's easy to go on the ride knowing that we're kind of seeing the dismantling of Noami's mental state from her perspective in that sense. We're living it as viewers by proxy. Hats off to all involved. It had me going "what the fuck!" more times than I can count and that's exactly what I want to do when I'm watching a horror movie.

Rewatched Severance (2007) for the first time since it was released. The Danny Dyer comedy fell flat & felt dated, but the horror elements hold up well. Smart decision to make it centred on a company retreat, they provide a decent backstory to what is causing the events playing out. I don’t think I’ll ever watch it again, but it was fine for a one-time rewatch.
