Horror films

Just saw Nosferatu and I’m amongst the ones underwhelmed. It was beautifully shot, but I expected a little bit more, to flesh the themes out further in order to not… just retell the same story. While I recognize the time setting of the story, I would love it if they’d developed the sexual themes more and not just leave it as sex = DEATH AND EVIL. And girls, I love Miss Eggers and his world and tension building but this one really dragged.

Also this has been probably the worst performance I’ve ever seen Aaron Taylor-Johnson give… what the hell happened there?

Oh I absolutely love the story told in Lord of Illusions.

I liked the new Nosferatu, but didn’t love it. The atmosphere was spot on, visually it looked great, and Lily Rose Depp gave an amazing performance. Plus I always like Nicholas Hoult. But

there was not nearly enough time spent at the castle. I wanted more of Nosferatu skulking about, I particularly was waiting on a scene of him coming down the hallway slowly towards Hoult’s character while he’s in bed. One of the best scenes in the original, I’m confused why they cut that out. In the same breath, I could have done with less of the possession angle. I sighed during the scene where Ellen levitated off of the bed, because we’ve seen that in the 5,000 possession movies that have been released the past 15 years. Luckily they managed to tow the line just enough that it never fully became a possession movie, but yeah, more vampire in his spooky castle and less demonic possession would have been preferred.

Also did not like Nosferatu’s design in this movie. I was hoping they’d maintain his ghoulishness, but they opted to go for a more troll like(?) Viking demon which…yeah, not the best.

It’s a good movie, but competing for the best horror of 2024 she ain’t.

MadS was a very fun ride last night.
It is such a gorgeously shot and scored film. I liked the execution way more than the concept, which just felt like a less scary, less intense [REC].

Tonight I'm going to check out both Marui Video and Occult, both of which have very middling reviews but some growing online adoration.

Also I had no idea the director of Butterfly Kisses was no longer with us. I wish we had gotten to see his career flourish...what a burgeoning talent with a great affection for the genre.
