I Came, I Saw, I Conquered: The Madonna Discography Rate, Part III - The 21st Century

Something about that demo works though. I'm not going to place it and 'Till Death Do Us Part' on the same level because I'm not a fucking idiot, but I think the same concept works here: dark subject matter paired with upbeat sonic storytelling. 'Gang Bang' is just so damn obvious in its final form. Throbbing derk production plus violent imagery equals meh.
Eh, it's still a Madonna song though and it's campy through and through. Hearing Madonna scream 'Drive bitch! Die bitch!' is as dark as it is hilarious, and it's not lacking any self-awareness, so the punchline is completely rewarding and the dark/light juxtaposition is still there. If it were on any other album, it would be regarded as one of her finest moments.

You've highlighted the reasons I do enjoy it to some point. I still think it's bizarre and empty. Camp can only go so far.

Also, just to remind you, tomorrow is the last day of four eliminations a day. Now that we're in the Top 40, we'll be moving down to three a day.

If anything, this rate has made me finally delve into a lot of her demo/unreleased work. I mean I'd heard the big ones like Across The Sky and Goodbye To Innocence (amazing) but it's nice hearing things like The Rain Tapes and I've FINALLY listened to those bloody Rebel Heart demos.

Yeah, none of them are better. I would literally take maybe a production flourish or two from Avicii Heart and the S.E.X demo at absolute most. Oh and if she polished up the Beautiful Scars one...that song needs work in any form though.

Just proved Rebel Heart might have been her savviest album, production choice wise. Cut the EDM and keep it classy and timeless, Queen.

Hollywood is definitely going to place higher than American Life..

These can go next thanks:

Rebel Heart sounded dated the day it came out. It's the song itself that makes a classic pop moment, not the production. Sadly, one or two of the mellower tracks aside, the songwriting on the album just isn't strong enough. Couple that with the desperately of-the-moment production on any of the uptempos/bangers/slut anthems and you have a recipe for an album that is forgotten by the masses pretty much before it even hits the shelves.

True story.

I thought my 11 was more divisive than it appears to be, which is kinda nice. I'm just hoping for a top 40 placing at this point. MY 80's 11 (Live to Tell) reached no.7, and my 90's 11 (Waiting) reached no.20, which is perhaps my favourite result across all three rates.
