iheartHazey's 90s EURODANCE PARTY: Wanna go for a rate? - THE END

  1. Sorry for tanking your 11 @DJHazey! But Toy-Box really scarred me for life. I'll say though, your family sounds awesome.
  2. I swear you have so much fun in life.
  3. You should have heard me and the girl next to me singing Alcazar songs. It probably sounded horrendous, but we're we going to stop? No way.
  4. Who is this and why does she have such a 2011 Harry Styles haircut and why for a split second did I think it was him?
    soratami, berserkboi, DJHazey and 2 others like this.
  5. Not Koko and Open My Eyes! That was one of my best discoveries of the whole rate, I downloaded it the second after I watched the video. Such a bop.

    And I am sorry for your loss @DJHazey, The Sailor Song is Go West done right!
  6. lmaoooo it's a shocked old brazilian citizen

  7. Ahh This Is The Way, It did a lot better than I expected it to be quite honest, It will always have a special place in my stone cold heart
  8. Time to kick out another artist... *sigh*

    Lowest: 3.5 x 1 (@CasuallyCrazed) 4 x 4 (@2014, @soratami, @LPMA, @Aester)

    Album: NonStop (1994)

    Best Charts: #46 (US), #19 (Germany)

    (It was also #1 on the Dance charts in Canada, so naturally I've been stanning a while!)

    Producers: Bulent Aris (Captain Hollywood, Daisy Dee), Toni Cottura (of Fun Factory)

    Last time we saw Fun Factory ("with the BSB!"... I couldn't resist, sorry) we got a glimpse of their Euro summer bop side. Now we're going full dance with their breakout hit both in their native Germany and the US.

    They first made their debut with 'Groove Me', but it failed to set the charts alight—except apparently in Finland. Here you'll see the only video appearance of original lead singer Balca, who continued to provide vocals thereafter from behind the scenes. Something something shyest girl in the whole wide world etc. etc.

    (Actually, Wiki tells me in this regard that she "left" the group due to a disagreement but was contractually obligated to keep singing. But who knows.)

    Finland knows what's up, honestly. This is a bop.

    'Close to You' came next, and I know it largely thanks to my childhood fave dance compilation Dance Mix 95, from which I managed to cram no less than four songs into this rate. (The others are 'Saturday Night', 'Dreamer', and 'What Is Love'. Y'all better like them!)

    This is the version I grew up with:

    This is the default version, which we rated:

    So which do you prefer?

    (For me, they're both 10s no matter what!)

    If you want more 'Close to You', you're in luck. Their follow-up album Fun-Tastic contains a sequel!

    It's practically the same song with a new take on the lyrics and a happier sound. Come to think of it, I might even like it better...

    @Seventeen Days (7) - Despite the title not sounding familiar at all, I swear I probably heard this at some point in the 90s. I’m enjoying this, it definitely bops.

    @31entrance (8) - okay but why is the rapper lowkey reminds me of Eddie from That's So Raven?

    I never did watch that show but this makes my life anyway.

    @WowWowWowWow (10) - I almost don't believe that Fun Factory ever existed. I had their Greatest Hits album and I certainly remember hearing their 2 songs in the rate on the radio. But would I know any of them if I was on the subway with them? Could I pick them out of a police lineup? Nope!

    @berserkboi (7.7) - Good but a bit stilted

    It was a discovery for some of you...

    @phily693 (7.5) - I enjoyed this much more than I initially thought I was going to.

    @Empty Shoebox (7) - Wasn't familiar with this act. It's a decent discovery. Good rhythm to it, nice melody. I quite like it.

    And a rediscovery for others...

    @ohnoitisnathan (9) - I didn't think I knew the song, but I've heard this before.

    Not Fun:

    (No, seriously, you're all fun and I heart you, but what can I say, it was a good heading.)

    @Ray (5) - Those points are for the chorus and the synth riff after chorus, the rest is…unnecessary.

    @sfmartin (6) - Formulaic.

    @One Stop Candy Shop (5.5) - Well she sure doesn't sound like the "shyest girl in the whole wide world". Not a fan of this.

    My new ridiculous fan theory is that it's because she doesn't actually appear as part of the band. Ha.

    @Sprockrooster (5) - Not impacting me a lot and kind of eclipsed by many of the brilliant tracks in this rate.

    As a bonus, another early Fun Factory Euro jam!

  9. Ha, this is great! I have no idea how my parents would react if I played "The Sailor Song" to them.

    Well, I'm glad my 10 helped keep it in a little longer. I had to listen to "Best Friend" several times to decide how I felt about it, but the campiness of "The Sailor Song" appealed to me right away. I've loved "Go West" since I was a kid, so no surprise, I guess!

    I cannot believe Dr. Alban is still in!

  10. A good bop, but Fun Factory left way too early!

    How Fracasando is still in the run is beyond me ~

  11. @iheartpoptarts & @DJHazey - Can I confirm that ATC will be part of the 00s version of this rate? Otherwise I may need to make it past my own VETOing on PJ00s...
  12. Of course!
  13. Yes ATC will most definitely be represented with both "Around the World (La La La La La)" and "My Heart Beats Like a Drum (Dum Dum Dum)"
  14. I know my 11 then!
  15. Not to give anything away, but a real contender for mine as well.
  16. The early Monday elimination is also from Germany, that's your hint and it's also the last song below a 7 average.

    @iheartpoptarts will bring you the first two songs over a 7 tonight.
  17. It's been a hellish day at work and I don't want to save this for when I get home, so let me give you the essentials for this reveal real quick. Remember we're still in Germany and I consider this to be one of my favorite new discoveries of the rate.

    Lowest: 1 (@CasuallyCrazed) 2 (@Ray)

    Album: Love Is Not Sex (1993)

    Charts: #17 (U.S.) #23 (UK) #1 (Germany) #2 (Belgium, Denmark) #3 (Austria, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland) #5 (Italy, Israel) #6 (Netherlands) #7 (France) #8 (Greece) #79 (u.S. Year-End) Platinum (Germany)

    Producers: Cyborg and DMP

    Other Major Hits: Only With You and Flying High

    Members: Tony Dawson-Harrison (rapper) Shirin von Gehlen a.k.a Shirin Amour (hooks)

    Tony started out in 1990 as Captain Hollywood but changed his name to Captain Hollywood Project later to distinguish himself from earlier projects. It also gave him the creative control to work with any producers and vocalists of his choosing. Despite being considered a one-man act at the time, the two members listed above are what most people consider to have been the group. The name came from the fact that he was stationed in Germany as a U.S. Army Captain and would entertain his military friends with street dancing routines. They would call him "Hollywood" and eventually the name worked itself out.

    He started out as a choreographer in the 80s, working with big names like Kim Wilde and Paula Abdul. He added film to his resume by landing cameo roles in such films as Beat Street and German cult classic Macho Man. He then opened the Captain Hollywood Dance Academy, which was a choreography school, and worked with acts such as Haddaway and DJ Bobo. By the 2000s, when he transitioned into doing choreography full time he worked with boy bands like O-Town. Tony also was co-founder of Twenty 4 Seven which has already left this rate.

    At first I wasn't really into the rapping part of this song, but that all has gone away because the melancholy delivery of the chorus is such an ear worm and like I said I consider it to be quite the new discovery.

    More and More:

    @WowWowWowWow (9) - Love Is Not Sex? Who asked you, Captain Hollywood Project? This has always been an underrated favorite of mine. Not everything has to be four on the floor all the time.

    @berserkboi (9) - This is alright verging on great

    Haha, to me this is quite the jump in adjectives.

    @sfmartin (6) - I appreciate the more chilled out vibe to this track. The smooth vocal is almost relaxing to listen to.

    Same here, that's what drew me in.

    @31entrance (9) - this kinda slaps.

    @Eric (9) - The comedy rap is A++++++

    @ohnoitisnathan (10) - Melancholic eurodance.

    @rav4boy (10) - Not sure why but have always loved this song.

    A Little More:

    @Seventeen Days (5) - This was one of those Eurodance tracks that I enjoyed, but didn’t really have anything that made it memorable for me. I like the synth arpeggio intro, but I will never fail to cringe at the “smoke it like it’s a joint” line.

    @One Stop Candy Shop (5.5) - Good enough.

    No More:

    @phily693 (5) - It doesn’t quite get there. I wish it went OFF!

    @Ray (2) - The same beat as Moby’s ‘Go’ – who was first? Or is this sampled from something even different? Unfortunately just because he had a good body that didn’t mean he should have been given a record deal. He’s got a very nice spoken voice which totally doesn’t go with the song at all. It sounds like a generic dance track with Captain speaking over the music for no reason.

    @Sprockrooster (6) - That female voice sounds a bit uninterested. Is that intentional. Not feeling it because of it.

    @Empty Shoebox (4) - This song never seems to peak. It's flat. Like Leicestershire.

    @CasuallyCrazed (1) - Not much of a song at all - extremely one-note.

    @Hudweiser (5.5) - Flying High and Find Another Way were where it's at.

    Here are the other well known hits.

  18. OK, this is my first real loss.

    Y'all have done it dirty, an absolute classic of the Eurodance genre. One song that I have never tired of and it is about 30 places too low!
  19. I feel like there are 2 completely divided factions of this rate at war with each other and taking losses.

    I think "More and More" lasted way too long, I honestly thought it would be one of the very first out. I'm also gobsmacked Dr. Alban has hung on this long...

    Yet I can't for the life of me figure out how "This is the Way" and Emjay's songs are out already. Some of my favorites of the rate... I just hope once we get to the top 20 we start hitting more universal agreement!!!
