Driving the Vengabus is a tough job, guys. Sometimes you get tired of it all, so you pack your bags and catch a flight (on Venga Airways, naturally) and off to Ibiza you go.

It's a vacation destination for all you Europeans out there according to the Top Answer Game, though you'll be completely and utterly screwed unless you go the general route and just write "Spain".

Personally, I've never been! I've always imagined it as nighttime beach parties and Paradisio's 'Bailando' playing on a loop, though this is probably inaccurate.

So, the Vengaboys. Their bus is coming. They want you in their room. And then there was that one time in Ibiza, which we just voted off our island.

It's a remake of the 1975 Typically Tropical hit 'Barbados', which I had honestly never heard of until now. (Who are they? Do they know they've got a Bambee song named after them? Lots of questions.)

The biggest surprise here is that the "bus driver" lyric goes all the way back to the original. I always thought it was such a clever Vengabus reference. Life ruined.

Barbados, signore, I love you mi amore! Nah, that's not the same song. Show @DJHazey some love. You can do better than PJOPS, surely.

I like this more than 'Ibiza', no lie.

The Vengaboys are vacay goals. Before Ibiza, before the Vengabus, before they had any success outside the Netherlands, Brazil was their place.

Much later in their career, they gave Jamaica a shout-out. Just buy a ticket and take a summer holi-holiday!

Then there's the matter of their interplanetary travels, but we don't need to talk about that.

Going to Ibiza:

Some of you just lost your Vengaboys fave...

@phily693 (10) - WOAH! I think this is the Vengaboys’ best song. WOAH! It’s pure cheese but pure holiday bliss. WOAH! It’s super pop but has elements of ska/reggae and slight tropical influence, you could make this song more reggae or tropi-pop than cheesy pop and it’d still be great song. Also, that video is pretty cool. Although it was very sexually charged, Kim’s boobs in particular…

Some of you are all about their other stuff...

@Seventeen Days (7) - My least favorite of the 3 in this rate, but even then still an enjoyable track.

@geomixes (7) - Honourable mention to Shalala Lala with its rave milk maids and its slap-pop ways

@One Stop Candy Shop (8) - Good but I prefer their other singles.

Some of you have seen the Vengaboys live and I am extremely jealous...

@OspreyQueen (10) - Party on the Dancefloor was my first tour I ever went to, so unless you count Max Restaino (I don’t), this was the first song I ever heard live. So I just gotta give it a 10.

@WowWowWowWow (9) - Sadly, at the radio concert where I saw the Vengaboys for the only time in my life, their 4-song set did not include this Ibiza anthem. I did like that they tried something different than their clubby stuff, although the clubby remix they had for this one was pretty decent too.

Some of you are happily bopping along...

@berserkboi (9.9) - LOVE!!!

@Eric (10) - I like the slightly more laid-back feel to this song, and it's so reminiscent of summer holidays!

@rav4boy (8.5) - They really were quite a decent act weren’t they?

Some of you are partying around the world... or not?

@Cutlery (9.2) - I like how they visit Stonehenge in the video, the Vengaboys really partied wherever they wanted, huh?

@Sprockrooster (7.5) - That intro is so lush, but I cannot help but feel halfway to skip it as I am already over the song. Never been to Ibiza between when it is some sort of almost Dutch colonized party island these days.

And some of you know how to pronounce Ibiza. (Apparently I don't!)

@Remorque (8) - Even though this song is kind of a bop in all its Ace Of Base-ness, it irks me in some ways, possibly just through Kim's performance. She sounds flat as hell and the Dutchness of her pronunciation of “Ibiza”... Sis.

Going to Eat Pizza:

@31entrance (8) - WE'RE GOING TO EAT PIZZAA!!

@Ray (4) - Everybody likes eating pizza.

@sfmartin (10) - How can you not smile and think about the great summer holidays you've had. Joyous. Although I will not ever not sing "We're going to eat pizza" over the top.

Going to Barbados:

@Empty Shoebox (9) - No we're not, we're going to Barbados. Unfortunately that's a much longer flight, so you'll have to put up with the airline food. Solid cover but I'm subtracting a point for the incorrect pronunciation of 'Ibiza'.

@A$AP Robbie (6) - This feels like them running out of steam - changing Barbados to Ibiza was commercially a good idea, but it feels flimsy now.

Not Going Anywhere:

@Hudweiser (4.5) - Not hi-NRG enough for me, though Shalala Lala was epic.

@ohnoitisnathan (3) - Not as good as their earlier singles.

@CasuallyCrazed (2) - Sex on the Beach did it marginally better. I don’t even think they listen to this one in Ibiza.

I don't know, it was #9 in Spain...

One more time!

Album: U Got 2 Know (1994)

Best Charts: #7 (UK), #3 (Italy), #3 (Austria), #7 (Belgium), #1 (Finland), #4 (Germany), #9 (Ireland), #1 (Netherlands), #9 (Sweden), #1 (Switzerland)

Producers: Gianfranco Bortolotti (49ers)

Confession time: I'm so not a Cappella expert—they're one of those acts that was a lot bigger in the UK and Europe than they were here. But I've got my research, so let's do this, guys!

Cappella dates back as far as 1975, when it was a songwriting operation going by the name Cappella Project and making music for other artists. Then most of them kind of called it a day, and last writer/producer standing Gianfranco Bortolotti carried on as Cappella and started racking up the hits.

'Move On Baby' came right after their signature single 'U Got 2 Let the Music' (we'll save that one for when we see it), and aside from in a few countries, it fell a little short of matching its success.

Cappella was known to vary their singles' radio mixes from region to region depending on what was hot where. If you were in the UK, Germany, or most other places, you apparently got the default version.

But if you were from France, the Netherlands, or Belgium, you got the slightly less techno, more commercial Eurodance-sounding Mars Plastic Edit.

They varied their performers too, it seems. Cappella rapper Rodney Bishop doesn't rap on 'Move On Baby'—rather, you'll find original Twenty 4 Seven member MC Fixx It. Did everyone get their start in Twenty 4 Seven? We sure owe them for a lot of Eurodance. And did all these singers and rappers just trade places whenever without the general public having a clue?

MC Fixx It was also in Anticapella, another Gianfranco Bortolotti group. I don't know if he was trying to manufacture a rivalry with that name or what!

Meanwhile, in unsurprising news, the vocals on 'Move On Baby' belong to a session singer instead of then-frontwoman Kelly Overett. I feel like I should make note of it when these Eurodance ladies do sing because it's turning out to be more of a rarity than I thought!

High-ish Scorers (Shhhh, I'm So Not Creative Today):

@Hudweiser (8.5) - My favorite Cappella single, though marred by that time Kelly tried to sing it live.

@ohnoitisnathan (10) - Depending on this mix, this was a contender for my 11. Iconic song, and iconic TOTP performance…

Oh my GOD, you guys, I have NOT been able to unhear this and now I sing it like that in my head.

@One Stop Candy Shop (8) - A discovery! An instant melody if ever there was one. I’m pretty sure I heard this before but it wasn’t on my radar. I’m gonna have to check out some more Cappella.

@WowWowWowWow (8) - What sort of ARTPOP music video?! I am pretty sure I once heard this on the NRJ Dance 90s channel, which is a great plug for the NRJ Radio app from France that has all sorts of streaming stations on their app, one of which is (as you might have guessed) 90s dance, and there are treasures aplenty on there. Anyway, bravo to Cappella for outscoring "U Got 2 Let The Music" with this one.

I went there! It was playing 'Music Sounds Better With You' by Stardust followed by 'Back In My Life' from our rate!

@geomixes (10) - Honourable mention to Move It Up which was an album highlight and their bestest most ravetastic single

We've got a shout-out for you below...

@A$AP Robbie (7) - I kind of like how apocolypticly brooding it sounds, sat here in my living room with a G&T but it'd possibly give me a panic attack in tha club.

Hehe, it's intense, isn't it?

@sfmartin (9) - Propelled by a great instrumental.

@Sprockrooster (10) - When that beat comes in it is such a euphoric moment that gets me on my feet. It is an early Tuesday morning and I am awake for barely an hour. And yet I am fully awake now due to this party anthem.

By the way, this is the score we accidentally entered as a 0 and that sent you to Italy once we finally realized our mistake! Oops.

@Empty Shoebox (7) - I like the little rhythm in the background that's going on throughout, then they strip back all the other layers and leave it on its own.

Our remaining Cappella song has its fans...

@Remorque (7) - U Got 2 Let the Music is definitely the better of their two songs in this rate, but it still pops off though.

@phily693 (8) - Not as high energy as U Got 2 Let The Music but still good. A respectable follow-up.

Mid/Low-ish Scorers:

@Ray (4) - This is very ‘service as usual’, sadly.

@berserkboi (5.6) - Okay, Italy is not really the T so far!

@Seventeen Days (5) - Was this band big anywhere in Europe? I’ve never heard of them before, and I can kind of see why. Another “good but not amazing” track.

Yes. Yes they were. Are you a lost North American like me? *high five*

With thanks to @geomixes, here's another big Cappella hit that didn't make it in. We'll save the rest for their next one!

he/him
One of my lowest scores as well. The difference between it and U Got 2 Let the Music is night and day as that was actually a discovery for me, so we definitely got this right but after all the favs of mine it beat it really should've gone much earlier.

Can I hijack the thread with another Danish 90s smash (“smash”) that I don’t feel anyone else on the forum will appreciate except in this thread? It’s sort of in the Euroreggae vein of the other bops. Cutfather and Joe did it again!

Thank goodness Melina Mercouri had already died before this song came out because it would likely have killed her.

Oh my god, we found Europop Shaggy.
