iheartHazey's 90s EURODANCE PARTY: Wanna go for a rate? - THE END

I'm going to be busy with car repairs and other things.

“The Vengabus is really getting old now. We love the Vengabus, but there’s no heater, it’s dead, and it’s freezing cold,” Robin Pors from the group tells me.

“But we always bring the Vengabus in our hearts with us. It’s our favourite bus in the world!”

Fix it Hazey! Hehe.

Nooooooooo, my beloved Denmark. I literally 10'd the entire country except for Tiggy, you guys.

You don't have the lowest average in my rate, so of course I believe it.

WAIT, where is Pompomica, who even are you.

Oh my God, can this rate get anymore iconc?

No one and I mean no one saw this coming.

You might recall me mentioning a song falling out of the Top 10 and being shocked by it, well here it is. Starting out at #3 and #4, that's more what I expected and I tabbed this as a serious winning contender from day one like anyone should. There were a surprising amount of scores in the 6-7 range that ultimately spelled doom, but the final score got an 11 after we reminded @ThisIsRogue that they could choose one.

Highest: 11 x 2 (@Ana Raquel, @ThisIsRogue) 10 x 12 (@WowWowWowWow, @berserkboi, @GhettoPrincess, @geomixes, @idratherjack, @LPMA, @Sprockrooster, @phily693, @Remorque, @Conan, @Cutlery, @DJHazey) 9.9 (@P Grandson)

Lowest: 5 (@Ray) 6 x 3 (@Eric, @soratami, @sfmartin) 6.5 (@31entrance)

Album: Sweet Dreams (1995)

Charts: #1 (Germany, Italy, Sweden) #2 (Australia, Iceland, Norway) #3 (Austria, Netherlands) #5 (Switzerland) #6 (Belgium, Hungary, Spain, U.S.) #7 (France) #8 (Ireland) #9 (Denmark) #15 (Scotland) #18 (Canada, Finland) #25 (UK) #44 (New Zealand)

Producers: Frank Farian, Uli Brenner, Gerd Amir Saraf

-Won the German Echo Award for Best Dance single in 1996.

Would you believe the band didn't think much of this song?

Lane McCray - "Be My Lover" no one liked. I kept trying to find words for the "la da da dee" part of the song. We couldn't find any words so we just left it in the song."

Things would change after the success the song had.

Lane McCray - "When we first started out, we were just trying to pay the bills. In the back of our minds, we hoped and remained encouraged that one day our ship would come in. Five million records later, I would say it's docked! What a blessing it has been to do work you are proud of and to find such great success with it."

-There were two videos - a European and American version. The American version just has Melanie singing in a studio, however the European has Melanie dressed in a dominatrix outfit, capturing Lane, and hanging him by his feet in an underground room with a bunch of other men who've been kidnapped. Most of this part of the video is not seen in the edited version of the video.

-"Be My Lover" was heard in Brazilian soap operas as well as films Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and A Night At the Roxbury. It can also be heard in scenes of 3rd Rock from the Sun and The Assassination of Gianni Versaci: American Crime Story, both scenes involving a gay bar.

This will always be remembered as one of the first Eurodance songs I ever heard and now that I see it's one of the few that charted higher in the U.S. then in the UK I'm not as surprised. It was at the same amusement park where I heard "Coco Jamboo" in fact. When I began collecting Eurodance songs/albums and discovering new acts, "Be My Lover" and its parent album were re-discoveries I made first to start getting into the spirit of it all. This would've have been a fantastic winner of course, but here we are...just another twist and turn in this rate.

Looking back on all the time we spent together:

Looking back 20 years in fact..

@WowWowWowWow (10) - LIKE BOYZ II MEN, I'M ON BENDED KNEE! LOVING YOU, NOT LIKE YOUR BROTHER!! Pure poetry!!! So glad that we had a La Bouche "moment" in the USA. RIP Melanie Thornton!!!! Please be forewarned that the following will make no sense... I have no musical aspirations and gave up playing the piano about 20 years ago, but I secretly (not anymore!) want to have a band that performs emo rock/pop punk cover versions of 90s dance anthems with no irony, and this song would definitely be in our setlist. Kind of like how the Ataris covered The Boys of Summer, but instead of Don Henley it would be Real McCoy songs. Sorry for the random aside but I didn't have anywhere else to put it.

You also seem to have an admirer..

@berserkboi (10) - @WowWowWowWow!

@ohnoitisnathan (9.5) - Docked half a point for the silly lyrics (or lack thereof). "Like Boyz II Men I'm on bended knee" and "lovin' you not like your brother" were hilarious though.

@Hudweiser (9) - Strange that this never really took off in the UK (it was released twice, reaching #27 then #25, as it had it all)

apparently they didn't stop at 2 releases...

@geomixes (10) - This song was so iconic it got released 3 times in the UK, and it still never became the huge smash it was everywhere else, a true pop mystery!

@GhettoPrincess (10) - I love this song because it reminds me of Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion and because it’s a damn good bop too.

@Seventeen Days (8.5) - This is the good stuff right here. I will always associate this song with the movie “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion”, because of the scene where it plays in the club.

@CasuallyCrazed (9) - La Bouche’s best song. That growling vocal has me shook.

@rav4boy (8.5) - Another awesome video! Decent track too.

@One Stop Candy Shop (8) - Ah it's her famous song. La Bop!

Her? Kii.

@phily693 (10) - It’s impossible not to dance or at least bop to this. A stone cold classic!

@Cutlery (10) - The OH BABY BABYYYYYYYYYYY is a bit of a life-changing moment.

@Sprockrooster (10) - One of the best songs in the entire rate and I still had no chance of giving it my 11, because there is too much goodness. Such an earworm than and now. Easily recognizable.

@Ana Raquel (11) - This is POWERFUL. I can't even express how much I adore this song. It has been in my memory since... I don't know? Just listening to it makes me feel so good, so happy, so alive!!!!

Yas, get your life!

You outta know right now and you have be sure:

@Ray (5) - Ah this is the La Douche song that I don’t like.

@Empty Shoebox (8) - She can't half belt this one out, can she? Why is the guy wearing swimming goggles though?

Honestly my issue with some R&B singers, but it usually works for me in dance music.

@sfmartin (6) - Doesn't stand out.

On what planet?

@WowWowWowWow your story somehow reminds me of the times, especially back when I almost exclusively listened to metal, when I'd listen to the music and imagine myself as the lead singer and some of my friends were in the band with me and we were playing at our school in some 'battle of the bands' thing and then started playing in bigger shows and stuff as I went through the playlist.
