First episode is out. It's very similar to her hit web series, "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl", slightly glammed up for TV.
Haven't seen her web series before, but loved this pilot. Beautifully shot (with Melina attached, that's no surprise), genuinely funny, a ton of heart, and a series of moments that rang painfully true. Really excited to see the rest of the season.
I wonder if that was the overall purpose - lure in people who hadn't seen the web series. As someone who had, it felt sorta strange, something like a milquetoast reboot that's slightly cornier in places and boasts unflattering recasting for every role except her own. It also felt like they had scoured the original thing for its best jokes and then crammed them all in to the pilot.
Liked it, not roped in completely. I need the narrative to be a little stronger but I can see it build.
This is getting really good reviews basically everywhere. I liked the episode, but I, too, came to this knowing and appreciating who/that she was (and seeing the gifs) but having never actually taken the time to check out her work.
I SCREAMED OUT LOUD AT "Your pussy broken. If it could talk it would do that sad Marge Simpson groan." "Mmmngghhhhhh" "YAAAASS!!"
I'm gonna try this despite my ire at her for using AIDS as a punchline in one her web series' episodes. People grow/mature etc..
You - and many others I've spoken to - say the show uses many of the jokes and bits from the web series, so I'm a bit nervous watching the web series so closely to the TV show will hurt my enjoyment of both.
Indeed. I watched the first episode and then the first webisode and there were already some jokes that from the latter on the former. So I think I'm gonna watch the webs later.
I have enjoyed the pilot - being 29 and single I felt understood. Looking forward to the rest of the show, hopefully I will not be disappointed.
