ITALY // Sanremo 2024

After my initial sweep these are my standouts (in rough order):

Annalisa – “Sinceramente”
Clara – “Diamanti grezzi”
Mahmood – “Tuta gold”
BigMama – “La rabbia non ti basta”
Il Tre – “Fragili”
Fred De Palma – “Il cielo non ci vuole”
Rose Villain – “Click boom!”
Irama – “Tu no”
Ghali – “Casa mia”
Angelina Mango – “La noia”

Overall there isn't a dud in the bunch - definitely the strongest batch of songs from any country and an upgrade from last year's edition.

The quality of the competing songs is very high but one thing that does make me laugh is just how many rely on raspy spoken word... rather than actual singing. I would say Emma's song (a bop nonetheless) falls into that category.

I love my motherland.

A woman is never winning Sanremo at this point. They will always find a guy to hand it to. I'm guessing this year that guy will be Geolier.

I don´t think Geolier will win. Televote is one thing, because well... Neapolitans are very committed to say the least haha. The jury will tank him, though. Mark my words.

Let’s not with these cold, vaguely anti-Southern takes. Geolier is a streaming behemoth and one of the most successful artists of the Italian music scene as a whole (as several other trappers adored by Gen Z + Alpha who have a monopoly on the charts). To match the kind of numbers he pulls, you would have to put together two thirds of this Sanremo cast. He’s one of the few artists competing actually popular with the main demographic voting, i.e. teenagers and young women (that also explains why Irama was second over Annalisa). It was inevitable that his song would get an avalanche of votes.

If it was up to the juries, Loredana Bertè would be handed the win, mostly as reparation and atonement for the awful way both the press and the public have treated her (and her sister Mimì) for years.

The one artist who has the biggest cross-over jury-public appeal is Angelina Mango. She has the energy of the newcomer, this sort of underdog vibe being freshly off the Amici industrial complex, bops upon bops, doesn’t feel inescapable like Queen of Platinum Certifications Annalisa—and she’s the daughter of a beloved and iconic singer who passed away prematurely. She has all the ingredients to defeat anyone in an eventual Top 3.

he/him
As much as I love Mahmood and Soldi and think it was the rightful winner that year. Loredana was kinda robbed that year Cosa ti aspetti da me is one of my all time favourite Sanremo song, her song this year is kinda weak.

At this point is everyone game really, unlike the last few years we don't have a clear winner, it can goes either ways.

It could be Angelina, Geolier, Annalisa, even Loredana and Mahmood or Irama stand a chance. I would not call out Alessandra Amoroso and Il Volo just yet, let's not forget that we have never seen the rest of the Top 30 and all those votes will add up in the final night. Also the top03 will get a last round of votes when it will be announced.

I really hope Angelina wins. She's such a force of nature on stage and she can put on a better show than most of the older artists. La Noia is amazing - I love the way the are some little references to people expecting her to be grieving her father for the rest of her life throughout the song.
Mahmood has a great song too but it's Soldi 2.0 and I don't want him to win again because his concerts tickets would get even more expensive.
