My Score: 8.25

Showdown is track 3 on Britney's fourth album, In The Zone. It was written by Britney, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, Henrik Jonback and Cathy Dennis. It was produced by Bloodshy & Avant.

My thoughts: I like this as you can tell from my score, but I feel like it's not quite strong enough to be so early in the tracklist of her best album. It's a very sexy song, which is why it's so fun to do the "woah ohhh" bits, the comedy of those mouth movements really provides a stark contrast to lyrics dripping in sex like "I don't really want to be a tease, but could you undo my zipper please?".
@clowezra (10) Another one of my all time favourite Britney album tracks, the production and delivery here are bonkers.

@boombazookajoe (9.5) I know she had Slave 4 U on Britney, but this song, and to a larger extent, feels like her real "janet." moment where she comes forth as a fully sexually liberated woman, and it's so exciting. A bop of a song! So much of this album has that real sexy vibe she started playing with on Britney.

@blaze_dave (8) An odd song but works quite well, love her breathy vocals on this.

@Kaz D'Oerba (8) The beat is so catchy, it just gets stuck in my head.

@livefrommelbs (6.5) I'm sure the gals will score this one highly to make up for the fact I've never really cared for it.

@chrisjche (10) One of my absolute favorite performances from the Onyx Hotel Tour.

@stereosalt (9) Britney’s weird vocal noises throughout are amazing, lol. Yes they are!

@AstronautMikeDexter (9) Okay, this has so many iconic lines in it. It’s such a sexy song and I don’t think it gets the credit it deserves!

@M24 (6.5) The guitar as the chorus is about to begin is the best part of the song (and maybe the last part of the chorus). The verses and middle-8 are sort of familiar territory though, and that's what doesn't allow me to give it a higher score.

@Attis (4) That ringtone-lite synths just make this song cheap

@Guyhawke! (8) Although Cathy Dennis and Bloodshy & Avant did better songs for her (see: ‘Toxic’) ‘Showdown’ is a testament to the quality of Britney’s album tracks, especially from the ‘In The Zone’ era. The coded sexuality of her previous material became more explicit: ‘I don’t really want to be a tease/but would you undo my zipper, please?’ The production marked a departure too, exploring a wide range of influences like the dancehall rhythm used here. Bloodshy & Avant’s stroke of genius here is the little reversed vocal part from Britney – super memorable.

@Milotic (9.5) It's just great. The "Butterfly" part makes me laugh though ddd. It's so Britney.

@BreatheBox (7.9) experimental queen

@Runawaywithme (10) I love how weird this song is. The broken reggae vibes in the production with all those bubbly synths and Brit's deep voice just do things to me. And that chorus with its big bubblegum hook is so lush and darkly alluring. A masterpiece. Britney and Bloodshy are a match made in heaven.

In my defense, it just sounds very demo-ish. The Nokia ringtone that constantly appears annoy me and the bass feels lacking.

I much prefer the Onyx tour interpretation, utilizing grungier guitar that gives the song needed energy.

Remember when I said some albums were getting thin on the ground...

Can't Make You Love Me

My Score: 8.75

Can't Make You Love Me is track 10 on Britney's second album, Oops!... I Did It Again. It was written by Kristian Lundin, Andreas Carlsson and Max Martin, and produced by Kristian Lundin and Jake Schulze. Can't Make You Love Me was also initially included in the copyright infringement claim by Michael Cottrill and Lawrence Wnukowski against What U See (Is What U Get), but this part of the claim was dropped prior to the case reaching a verdict.

My thoughts: Again, this is very much that standard Max Martin sound BUT it's a bop. I think it's perfectly placed in the back half of the album to give a little jolt of energy to stop us getting bored with all the ballads floating about. I really enjoy the energy in the vocals on this one.
@JMRGBY (8.5) Seeing this title on that board in the Vegas documentary as a candidate for the setlist excited me so much. Going unperformed after all these years is so sad. Maybe one day there'll be an anti tour...

@boombazookajoe (7.5) It's trying to be a carbon copy of Crazy. Because of its source material, it's not a bad song, but it's a pale imitator.

@blaze_dave (9) Seriously how could you not love Britney? What a fool. A bop and love that 'alright' bit.

@Kaz D'Oerba (8.5) God I forgot how HARD this song goes off. Another song on the album that could’ve been a single. I think it's a bit too similar sounding so it may not have created enough of an impact.

@maikos87 (10) The sister to What U See (Is What U Get) couldn’t get anything lower than 10

@Ana Raquel (10) Why are you describing my love life thanks I hate it

@Lost In Japan. (10) Her best album track and the lost single from the Oops! era. Poor Satisfaction... nn.

@daninternational (9.5) Some songs sound dated, others transport you back to that era perfectly in a nostalgic enjoyable way

@M24 (4.5) That chorus leaves me wanting more. Overall it's still a good song, but I think the "2000s teen pop" Britney album tracks like Cinderella or Bombastic Love did the same thing ten times better.

@Jawshxx (9.5) I’m just a girl with a crush on YEW. The breathy vocals are everything.

@Guyhawke! (8) Max Martin on autopilot again. It’s a good thing ‘Can’t Make You Love Me’ and ‘What U See (Is What U Get)’ are a few tracks away from one another on the album as they are almost interchangeable. The dreamy ‘just the thought of being close to you…’ section and the way it revs up into the chorus again is fun. They are a bit similar aren't they?

@Milotic (9.25) Injects some much needed life into the album at this point. Could've easily been a single, I think.

@BreatheBox (7.6) sounds kinda like stronger with the thump-thump-thump thing

@Music Is Death (10) An absolute banger of a song, and my pick for possible 6th single from the album after What U See. I absolutely love how the guitars are used in this. They give the song a rock vibe that Britney just excels and mixes well with the dance-pop feel of the rest of it. Also the chorus feels like it belongs to a Britney classic, because this absolutely should have been one.

@lilylu (10) This keeps the soundscape of the era but does something a little different with it, and it is great. It really is.

Handing over to 11 giver @WhenTheSunGoesDown to finish up:

@WhenTheSunGoesDown (11) Absolutely euphoric. The apocalyptic instrumental!

What the fuck? As I say in my commentary, it's probably her best album track (bar In the Zone, I'll admit I forgot about 'Breathe on Me' and 'Touch of my Hand' not being singles when I wrote that), and the biggest shoulda-been single in her career.

We had better not be losing any of those final three Oops! tracks until the top 20 at LEAST.

he/him
I reacted strongly when my bubblegum faves were eviscerated early, but it's funny to see everyone freak out now. Everything left is great so every elimination will be sad! No avoiding it. It just speaks to how good Britney's discography is.

This song definitely wasn't in the top 50 zone...

Early Mornin'
(from In The Zone)

Average: 8.144

Top Scorer: 11 x 1 (@Mushroom)

High Scorers: 10 x 19 (@theincredibleflipper, @boombazookajoe, @Dangerous Maknae, @blaze_dave, @joeee, @Steve003, @maikos87, @eatyourself, @Ana Raquel, @andru, @godspeed, @soratami, @dylanaber, @An Insider, @djmakemewet, @BreatheBox, @Runawaywithme, @1991, @LykkeLi)
Low Scorer: 4 x 4 (@j267, @LKane, @abael, @M24)
My Score: 8.5

Early Mornin' appears as track 5 on Britney's 4th album In The Zone. The track was written by Penelope Magnet, Moby, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Britney herself. The song was produced by Moby, with vocal production by Trixster and Penelope Magnet (whose vocals appear in the chorus, allegedly left over from the demo of the song). The Jason Nevins Remix also appears on the album B In The Mix: Volume 1.

My thoughts: The word I've always used to describe this song is hypnotic, there's something irresistible that draws you in and doesn't let go until the song is over. I do enjoy the morning after vibes of the song (also explored later in Blur from Circus). It's a bit of a shame we don't get Britney vocals on the chorus but I don't really think it negatively impacts the song.

@boombazookajoe (10) In relistening to this album, I would probably say In The Zone is her most diverse, experimental, and foreword thinking album of all. So many left turns that you never know what's going to come next. I know I've made a few Janet comparisons already, but this album really reminds me of Janet in her height. Monster ear worm singles that everyone in the world knew and loved, littered with offbeat, slinky, sexy, experimental album tracks. It's also her best album and I will not back down from that opinion.

@blaze_dave (10) For a long time I really wasn't a fan of this song. But after so many years, I came to appreciate it and falling in love with it. It is such a mood, creates a great morning after atmosphere against Britney and Penelope's vocals.

@Kaz D'Oerba (6.5) I’ve never been entirely sure about how I felt about this song. I like it more than I used to, but I know a lot of people absolutely love it and it just never clicked with me.

@maikos87 (10) A mature sound for 2003 Britney, but it’s so sexy and the production slays. The Jason Nevins remix elevates the song even more. I wouldn't agree that it elevates the song but it's an interesting alternative for sure.

@chrisjche (9.5) I’m sad this has never gotten a performance

@Lost In Japan. (9.5) if you haven’t done an early morning walk home listening to this, you haven’t lived I better start living soon then!

@daninternational (6.5) I see what she was going for, but it didn't get there

@M24 (4) I know everyone loves this, but it's just there for me. It's a little monotonous, and I'm not the biggest fan of this urban vibe.

@An Insider (10) For the longest time, this has been my 11. Her voice is just so deliciously mysterious, and the production is so ominous.

@Guyhawke! (8.5) Aside from Madonna, Moby was the most unexpected collaborator on ‘In The Zone’. He brings his chill-out sensibility to Britney’s pop world and the result is the bleary trip-hop of ‘Early Mornin’’, a visceral slice of morning-after storytelling. The ‘I light your fire, your one desire’ section feels like a reference to Janet’s similarly relaxed ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’, delivered with the same cadence as ‘like a moth to a flame, burned by the fire/my love is blind, can’t you see my desire?’ My only gripe is that I’ve always wanted to hear more of Britney’s voice in the chorus.

@Milotic (8) Not my favorite but I still like it.

@Runawaywithme (10) I didn't like this song until I had my messy party girl era and now it's an absolute favourite. I love the darker, vibier, slightly sinister production. It perfectly sums up that hazy, hungover, "whatever" attitude so well. I've definitely listened to it on many a walk of shame home as the sun rises. The remix on the remix collection is also flawless, and I have imagined a great live performance to it. We don't believe in walks of shame around here. No shame in a walk home when it's early mornin'.
