Freakshow is the 7th track on Britney's fifth album, Blackout. It was written by Britney, Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, Henrik Jonback, Ezekiel Lewis and Patrick "J. Que" Smith. It was produced by Bloodshy & Avant and The Clutch. A year prior to Blackout's release, an instrumental demo of the song leaked on Bloodshy & Avant's website, though there was no indication at that time that the song was to be included on the album.

My thoughts: I love this song. It's one of the ones I thought was cute at first but the rate really gave me an appreciation of it. I feel like I knew it wouldn't do that well because during the voting period it was acknowledged as one of the weaker offerings on the Blackout album but seeing it JUST miss the top 50 was hard. While freakshow isn't a term that we're down with anymore in 2021, I can't deny how good the song is. It even inspired a transformation reel for my Halloween makeup!
@boombazookajoe (10) There is not a better 3 song run on any album by any artist than Get Naked into Freakshow into Toy Soldier.

@blaze_dave (9) First use of dupstep, there I said it. A playful track that I love and clearly Britney loves too. She clearly has taste!

@Kaz D'Oerba (10) My go-to drunk singing and dancing song!

@livefrommelbs (10) Blackout at its most brilliantly bonkers. Tea!

@daninternational (5.9) Basic, even in the limited genre of songs about freakshows

@M24 (8) I like it but it's not my favorite. The "me and my girls like to get it on, grab us a couple boys to go" is my favorite part.

@Guyhawke! (9.5) There are a handful of songs in Britney’s discography where the short runtime makes them feel undercooked; ‘Freakshow’ is the rare exception where in less than 3 minutes she carves up an entire meal. The constantly shifting vocal tones blur the lines of fantasy and reality as the rubbery arrangement stretches and flexes underneath, and Britney’s identifiable voice suddenly becomes genderless. It’s one of the many experimental moves on ‘Blackout’ that pays off.

@Milotic (9.75) The energyyy the warbly opening instrumental gives me. Whatever that noise is, it always gets me going.

@Runawaywithme (10) Invented dubstep. Her delivery here is what also makes it so special. Her hazy, sexy, sleazy come one's match the disjointed, muddy, instrumental so well.

What U See (Is What U Get)
(from Oops!... I Did It Again)

Low Scorer: 3.5 x 1 (@M24)
My Score: 9

What U See (Is What U Get) is track 6 on Britney's second album, Oops!... I Did It Again. It was written by Jörgen Elofsson, Per Magnusson, David Kreuger and Rami Yacoub, and produced by the latter 3. A copyright infringement case was filed against Britney by songwriters Michael Cottrill and Lawrence Wnukowski, who claimed that the title and melody of What U See (Is What U Get) were taken from their song, What You See Is What You Get. Ultimately the case was dismissed by a federal judge who ruled that there was insufficient evidence that there had been access to Cottrill and Wnukowski's song at the time that What U See (Is What U Get) was written, and that the songs did not have enough similarities to prove copyright infringement.

My thoughts: This is a bop, and in an alternative reality I could've seen this being a single at some point in the campaign. The ad libs are really fun, it feels like Britney really lets loose on them. My favourite thing about it is listening on shuffle and then laughing at whatever comes on after "wouldn't that make a cool song?".
@boombazookajoe (7.5) One of her better album tracks that ape her singles sound. The outro/lead in to Lucky is dumb though.

@blaze_dave (9) Seriously who did Britney wrong? Another pissed off Britney track, but luckily I love all these. Another classic bop. Let's just blame Jamie.

@Kaz D'Oerba (8.5) Another song that deserved to be a single, but sadly wasn’t.

@maikos87 (10) If I was to give an example of a 2000 pop bop, this would be it

@daninternational (4.5) So generically Britney, a weak effort Not as weak as this opinion!

@livefrommelbs (8.5) The way this is basically just Oops 2.0 and still manages to be an 8.5 - that's talent.

@Lost In Japan. (10) aaaahhhh…. Believe! MAY! You’ll be looking for trouble!

@AstronautMikeDexter (6.5) It’s bland.

@M24 (3.5) It somehow feels like a more generic teen pop number than Don't Go Knockin on My Door.

@WhenTheSunGoesDown (9.5) The way this song starts by kicking your door down and proceeding to punch you in the face repeatedly… powerful. What imagery!

@Jawshxx (10) What a fucking BOP. How this was never a single is beyond me. The way she tells, nay DEMANDS her man that she be respected. The life it gives me. The production is immaculate too, obviously.

@Guyhawke! (8) An early effort to reference the public’s perception of Britney and the sort of self-empowerment lyric that would come into its own during the ‘Britney’ era. ‘What U See (Is What U Get)’ is standard Max Martin fare at this point, but clearly Lady Gaga liked it seeing as the tour performance invented her entire ‘Joanne’ era aesthetic.

@Milotic (9.5) Always one of my favorites from this CD ever since childhood. Love how the end transitions into Lucky.

@BreatheBox (7.8) this album can literally be a singles collection if they wanted it to be

@Music Is Death (10) Now this should have been a single. Another perfect pop song from her if we’re being honest, and the lyrics are high-key extremely relatable, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that. This is one of her best album tracks and I will die on that hill if I have to. Better be top 20. Yikes!

Baby me LOVED this JAM! You should tayke Meeuhh as I eeeEEEAM ICONIC vocal delivery

Ahhhh I have caught up to see I am now the villainess but Freakshow has never vibed with me. I feel like it benefits from being on Blackout cause it’s just…not good.

What U See (Is What U Get) is a huge bop, but it really does retread the 99/00s singles very closely. I get why it left, and am happy Can't Make You Love Me is the best-standing Oops album track.

What U See (Is What U Get) may be a little reductive sonically (although to be honest, when the blueprint is one of the best pop songs of all time you can’t be mad) but I love how empowered she sounds on it which we never really heard on ..Baby. Plus I suppose I can relate in a way after being told one too many times by ‘masc’ types to tone the femme down, act like this, don’t act like that, etc. Which to them I say;

You should never try to change me I can be noboooody else, and I like the way I am!

dd

People stay off the drugs or take more or whatever it is that would finally get some people here some taste. Terrible rate. But also I see the problem of Britney’s discography just being so good that of course some things are wrong. But that wrong? People.
