Sometimes is track 3 from Britney's debut album ...Baby One More Time. It was the albums second single, written by Jörgen Elofsson and produced by Elofsson, Per Magnusson and David Kreuger. The song was successful worldwide, peaking at number one in Belgium, Netherlands and New Zealand, number two in Australia, and number three in the United Kingdom. The song also made the top 10 in a number of other countries, and peaked at 21 in the US Billboard Hot 100. There was some controversy around the writing credits when a songwriter, Steve Wallace, claimed the song was his. He produced an email in which Britney allegedly confirmed that he had written the song however this was deemed to be fake and the lawsuit was dismissed. The music video for the song was directed by Nigel Dick, and filming for the video was delayed after Britney injured her knee during rehearsals and required physical therapy.

My thoughts: This is just lovely. Different from ...Baby in every way (except being catchy) this was the perfect second single. It's a really cute midtempo ballad and despite some... odd lyrics I can see why they chose it. The vocals are on point, especially the adlibs in the final choruses. AND we got a key change? We were spoilt teebs.
@clowezra (10) Sometimes I feel like this is almost underrated in the fandom? Genuinely a beautiful and brilliantly written pop song. Well look at the placing, clearly it is underrated!

@JMRGBY (9.5) Sometimes is sugary sweet and gorgeous and holds some really personal memories for me from my childhood.

@boombazookajoe (10) Her best single from the first era by a long shot. It's cheesy in the most perfect way. You can't deny how catchy this song is. The ad libs! The gospel sounding chorus that pops up towards the end! The iconic music video! It's perfect. The adlibs go OFF for sure.

@blaze_dave (9) That middle 8 is just heavenly. I still remember the controversy over this video with her boobs.

@Kaz D'Oerba (7.5) I actually despised this song back in the day. Now, however, it’s one of my go-to songs if I want to hear classic Vocal-ney in action.

@maikos87 (9) I love everything about Sometimes Well you didn't give it a 10 so there must be something you don't like about it ddd.

@unnameable (10) this is the perfect combination of everything right in turn of the millenium pop combined with teen love songs.

@Ugly Beauty (9) this deserves to be remembered more to be honest, one of her best ballads.

@Daniel_O (7) I never really cared for this song until recently. I guess the nostalgic value got me to like it a lot more.

@livefrommelbs (9) The hook on that chorus is undeniable. Takes me back to my last few years of primary school.

@Ana Raquel (10) Too bad she dislikes this because I think it's super sweet?

@chrisjche (10) As a person with trust issues, I relate heavily with this song. <3

@stereosalt (8) Britney’s ad libs at the end are stunning. Plus the video is so cuuuuute.

@cdd216 (8.75) After all of the excitement of "Baby," I really thought that Sometimes was a snooze - I generally resented the repeated attempts to make Ballad-ney happen until Everytime was released. It just didn't feel like her lane. Obviously, time and maturity have made me realize that Sometimes is an absolute treasure and has some of her best vocals.

@daninternational (9.5) I made my own (very literal) choreography to this song while on a family holiday. It isn't great but the nostalgia is real Okay but we're gonna need to see that hun.

@AstronautMikeDexter (6) Whether Britney was joking when she said she hated “Sometimes” or not, I am not joking. I do not care for this song. I don’t think it should have been the second single either. It was probably a good career move after some early controversy, but it doesn’t work for me.

@M24 (8) That epic middle-8 and Britney's adlibs at the end sell this song to me.

@WhenTheSunGoesDown (8.5) Sometimes I STAN (I am not an eloquent man.)

@Jawshxx (10) I remember performing this in primary school for the Christmas play in all white dd. I wanted to perform Crazy instead but the teacher thought it was too risqué for an 8 year old.

@Guyhawke! (9.5) You get the feeling there wasn’t enough confidence in the Britney brand yet, so a midtempo was sent out to test the waters. ‘Sometimes’ is a comforting reminder of less complicated times. It’s been lost in the shuffle of other hits, despite being the sort of second single The Other Girls would have killed for.

@Milotic (8) Just a solid ballad. Also, she sounds great!

@BreatheBox (10) did this for a talent show one year, got cut off right before the key change i was so mad. HOMOPHOBIA!

@Runawaywithme (10) That middle eight feels like ascending to the pearly white gates everytime it hits, and those adlibs just seal the deal

@Verandi (2.5) My least favourite Britney single. I just… hate it.

@Music Is Death (10) A beautiful, peaceful and heccing relatable mid-tempo. This is just such a pretty song, and honestly really interesting choice for second single for the album. I feel like it’s not an obvious choice the way (You Drive Me) Crazy was, but it was such a good one. The music video too is so pretty and sweet. In general, I just love all the feelings and lyrics that this song has, especially now that I’m older and can understand and relate to it.

@lilylu (10) It's simply a perfect bubblegum pop ballad. It's quotable, fun to sing along with, breezy. Correct.

They probably wanted to soften her image after the firestorm the Baby One More Time video and the Rolling Stone cover ignited but I always found Sometimes too corny and saccharine. Thank God Crazy came right after because my fandom was wobbling.

All remaining singles are now safe in the top 40...

I'm thrilled this is finally leaving us...

Phonography
(from Circus)

Low Scorer: 1 x 1 (@stereosalt)
My Score: 3

Phonography is a bonus track on the deluxe edition of Britney's sixth album, Circus. It was written by Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, Henrik Jonback, Balewa Muhammad, Candice Nelson, Ezekiel "Zeke" Lewis and Patrick "J. Que" Smith. It was produced by Bloodshy & Avant and The Clutch.

My thoughts: I don't like this. It sounds low quality and the lyrics are stupid. Plus I don't really care for phone sex ddd.
@clowezra (10) One of her all time best bonus tracks, what a banger.

@JMRGBY (10) This being left off the main album, especially over crap like My Baby or If U Seek Amy is a crime. They were doing us a favour.

@boombazookajoe (6.5) This would be a better song if the production (specifcally the vocal production) didn't sound like it was produced by an intern using ProTools for the first time. It sounds so ... cheap? Agreed.

@blaze_dave (9) All love the dark sounding synths on this song and a much better phone sex song! So self assured in the vocals.

@Kaz D'Oerba (9.5) The definitive song about phone sex.

@maikos87 (10) Everything about this one is magical. A missed chance of a single. A single? No ma'am.

@livefrommelbs (9.5) SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE MAIN TRACKLIST. BOP.

@Ana Raquel (10) I once scrobbled this track on last.fm as "Pornography". Great times.

@daninternational (5.5) It's no E-mail My Heart

@Leogin (10) Breathe on Me lost sister, I adore this song. These sisters must be estranged because they are nothing alike.

@M24 (8.5) The way this song holds up in the sexting age ddd. Bloodshy & Avant just never failed Britney (well, personally I'm not that fond of How I Roll, but that's actually produced just by Bloodshy if I'm not mistaken).

@An Insider (10) Her two songs about phone sex are 10s and I don't think that's a coincidence!

@Attis (10) Should've been replacing Blur in the main tracklist The rate is cancelled.

@Filler (10) It's kind of a one-song greatest hits compilation innit? Frothy playful pop frolic that gets vortexed mid-chorus into sexy darkroom Blackout hellfire. If you were going to play someone one song to understand what Britney's discography was about, it ought to be this. Absolutely hate the idea of phone sex personally, sounds absolutely mortifying, but I acknowledge that it is a relatively responsible activity in a pandemic.

@Guyhawke! (9) ‘Phonography’ absolutely should have been on the main tracklisting for the ‘Circus’ album. It reminds me of P!nk’s ‘Fingers’, a winking electropop song that toes the line between sexy and silly. Bloodshy & Avant deliver once again. To me this is all silly no sex.

@Milotic (9.5) Has that same.. sinister ethereal robot vibe that Mannequin has, which I really enjoy.

@BreatheBox (10) a typical bonus-track-status-smash-hit

@Runawaywithme (9) A sinister ode to phone sex. Amazing.

Phonography deserved top 40, but it did very well for a bonus track. The top 40 is mostly flawless, my only scores below 9 are the three Britney album tracks (8s) and If I'm Dancing (7). I'm baffled at how the latter, a nice enough but completely unremarkable album track, is still here and managed to beat so many better songs.
