Everytime is track 12 on Britney's fourth album, In the Zone, and was released as the third single from the album. The song was produced by Guy Sigsworth, and Britney composed the music for the song herself. The lyrics were co-written by Britney and Annet Artani, who became close with Britney after being a backing singer on her Dream Within a Dream Tour. Everytime peaked at number 1 in Australia, Hungary, Ireland, Scotland and on the UK Singles Chart, and reached the top ten in twelve other regions. It peaked at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Artani has reported that Everytime was a response to Cry Me a River, a song by Justin Timberlake, whom Britney had broken up with in the months prior to writing the song, although Britney has not confirmed this to be the case. The music video deals with themes such as the pressures of fame, of death, of reincarnation and of bad relationships (she has a very tumultuous relationship in the video with her on screen boyfriend, actor Stephen Dorff). The video originally ended with Britney committing suicide by drug overdose but this was later cut and the video ends with Britney waking up in the bath as if some of the depicted events were just a dream.
My thoughts: There are ballads in Britney's discography, but this really stands alone. It's not just a slow song, or a sad song, it's a distillation of Britney's fragility and I honestly don't get how anyone can listen to this and not feel anything. I also love how it's so understated in both production and vocals, no flashy vocal runs or kitchen sink production. The fact that she wrote it herself is the cherry on top. Even though I gave a number of 10's this would be at the top of that pile, it's just so good and has been a favourite of mine since the album was released, even prior to it becoming a single.
@clowezra (10) I still struggle to get through this, for all the best reasons. My mum can't listen to it at all it upsets her that much, it hits every note and feel perfectly.
@boombazookajoe (10) Yeah -- this one is still a stunner all these years later.
@blaze_dave (10) Britney's first penned song to be released as a single and what a ballad. Her emotive vocals with that piano production, the riff that she came up with. The music video is stunning and a great contrast to this song.
Really love the vibe of the video, it so easily could have just been her with a pretty gown in front of a plain background.
@Sprockrooster (10) I remember the music video making my heart stop the first time I saw it. And still the chills run down on my spine watching it. Knowing what state of mind she was in then and baring it all in such a vulnerable manner is the essence of music. This is art.
@Kaz D'Oerba (9.5) This song is absolutely stunning. Ballads may not be Britney’s thing, but when she goes for one, she goes HARD.
I would disagree, I think she does ballads quite well.
@maikos87 (10) Her best ballad. One of her best videos. Simple, yet stunning
@unnameable (10) Possibly her finest ballad
Correct.
@livefrommelbs (10) In and amongst the bops and the bangers shines this fragile, flawless moment of broken introspection. A true standout in the discography that only becomes more impactful and emotional as time passes.
@Ana Raquel (8) This used to be one of my favorite songs by Britney (!!!!!) but it faded on me after some years, and now I have other ballads I prefer. Still a MOMENT. That bridge an angel truly cried
@stereosalt (10) This was almost my 11. Just… wow. Haunting. Beautiful. Tragic. Timeless.
@cdd216 (9.75) Britney responding to JT building a solo career by slut-shaming and smearing her in the press, by writing what is essentially an apology song shows what a class act she is... but is also unsettling and fucked up and has always cast a bit of a pall over the song for me. It is undeniably gorgeous though. The melody is absolutely haunting and she delivers one of her most delicate and emotive vocals. I think this song is so beloved because of how transparent Britney is about her insecurities, which was incredibly validating to this then-teen who was struggling with many of his own.
Apologising to someone who has hurt you might be why I relate to this song so much.
@Babyface (10) Invented a new word, Shakespeare couldn't do it.
@daninternational (10) could your faves have done this ballad? doubt it
@Attis (6) Love the sentiment, but her ballad isn't really my cup of tea
This opinion isn't my cup of tea.
@Guyhawke! (9) A delicate ballad that somehow became a signature song. Britney’s airy vocals are beautiful and the footage of her playing the piano riff during the ‘In The Zone’ ABC special speaks to her understated musicality. Only Britney could sing a ballad like ‘Everytime’; it would feel too heavy-handed being performed by anyone else.
@Milotic (9.75) Definitely one of her best ballads.
Definitely!
@Runawaywithme (10) A potential 11. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded in history.
Handing over to 11 givers @JMRGBY, @M24 and @FabbyWabby (my lovely boyfriend):
@JMRGBY (11) I’ve always been a sucker for an emotional ballad and this is no exception. I always remember the first time I played this song over my big chunky headphones connected to my mini hi-fi in my room and crying because it was so gorgeous. Even now it can still invoke goosebumps in me. (Also, the Scumfrog remix is fire)
@M24 (11) Do I have my stan glasses on, or is this objectively one of the best ballads ever? So haunting and beautifully sad. I can't listen to it without feeling moved, hence why I'm giving it my 11. The MV is one of her best for sure, and I'm sure it would've been even more impactful if they had gone through with the suicide idea.
You do have stan glasses on but that's okay because you're correct.
@FABBYWABBY (11) I heard this song for the first time when Holly was listening to music and it came on, and immediately had to know what it was. I then proceeded to listen to it pretty much on repeat for the next couple of weeks. When I decided to take part in the rate there were a good few Britney songs I wasn’t familiar with so I wasn’t sure how my scores would go. Everytime was my 11 from the get go and although there were a few contenders, ultimately nothing bumped it out of that top spot. Something about it just has me coming back time and (every)time again.
Hi, I love you and you're very sexy.
