Toxic is track 6 and the second single from Britney's fourth album, In the Zone. It was written and produced by Bloodshy & Avant, with additional writing by Cathy Dennis and Henrik Jonback. The song was originally intended for Kylie Minogue, but she turned it down. The song was successful globally, topping the charts in ten countries including Australia, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Norway and the United Kingdom, and reaching the top 10 in fifteen countries, including the United States where it reached number 9. The song became Britney's first (and to date, only) song to win a Grammy, collecting the award for Best Dance Recording at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards (2005). It also received many other awards, nominations and appeared on a number of '...best of' lists. The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn and depicts Britney as a secret agent, featuring references to Blade Runner, The Seven Year Itch and John Woo films and interspersed scenes of Spears naked with diamonds on her body. The song has been performed in a number of Britney's tours and been covered many times and appeared in numerous TV shows and movies. A recent mashup of the song, combined with Pony by Ginuwine, went viral on TikTok and has to date been streamed more than 14 million times on Spotify.
My thoughts: Honestly? This should've been the lead single, Madonna or no Madonna. This really is one of those pop songs that are just simply perfect as they are. I'll be honest and say it's not quite up there with my favourite Britney songs, but it's impact is undeniable. The video is a complete serve, and is very Alias if you ask me. While some of Britney's videos contain one of her most iconic looks, this video contained several. Far from being a runaway winner of the rate, this song was actually outside of the top 10 for a long time before finally clawing it's way into the top 3. This is super random but my favourite part of the song is the "I think I'm ready now" spoken bit near the end.
@clowezra (10) Let the straights eat this up, this deserves all the GP acclaim it gets, a perfect pop song.
@JMRGBY (10) While Me Against The Music put me off buying In The Zone, when Toxic was released, I knew I had to get it. There’s not much that can be said about this slice of pop perfection that hasn’t been already said but there’s a reason it’s still intensely popular even now. The sample alone is genius and Cathy Dennis really did create a monster with this.
@boombazookajoe (10) I once knew a girl who used the bridge of this song for her Musical Theatre auditions and would actually book from it. Anyway, this song is perfect.
@blaze_dave (10) I know this gets overplayed but it really is an amazing pop song, especially when it was released at the time. Those Bollywood strings are legendary and make this song. Still a bop to listen to after all these years. Also the video showing her in blonde, red and black hair, shows she can pull any look.
Showing the judge's versatility!
@joeee (10) This was almost my 11. It’s very well-known and overplayed but that does not stop it from being one of the most innovative and genius pop songs ever. It doesn’t surprise me that it’s Britney’s favourite as well because it’s a really brilliant song, and I can’t believe it peaked at number 9 in the US.
@Sprockrooster (9) I really hope this doesn’t win. It is good, definitely. But best? No. Her ultimate winner? Definitely no. This isn’t even the best on the album for me.
Just say The Hook Up.
@Kaz D'Oerba (9) It’s amazing, it’s iconic, and it’s always great fun to mime along to! I am a tad sick of it these days, though.
@maikos87 (10) A masterpiece. Production, vocals, video, everything!
@unnameable (10) a great moment in pop history.
@livefrommelbs (10) Giving this anything other than a 10 is contrarian nonsense. A Grammy winner for a reason. Idiosyncratic, urgent, exemplary.
@Ana Raquel (10) We all know this song is a work of art so I'll just appreciate that performance from the ABC Special. The way she looked so stunning ugh her mind.
@stereosalt (10) When In The Zone came out, I was too poor to buy it. So I lied and told my friends I did, and that Toxic was my least favorite (I had seen the track listing on the CD case during a regular trip to Strawberries, RIP) They were all like, what?? It is?? And then a friend found out I lied so she burned the CD for me and I realized the error of my ways. Another masterpiece!
That's so cute!
@cdd216 (9.75) On its merits, I recognize Toxic's excellence and innovative genius, but the song has never been one that I have gravitated towards personally. I will, however, always appreciate it as the moment that Britney became "cool" again, after years of my peers ragging on her. Also, the video!!
@daninternational (9.2) It's an undeniable banger, but it's also a bit overplayed and out of the context of being ahead of its time, it's lost a bit of its edge for me
@AstronautMikeDexter (10) It’s just excellent. What more can be said about it? It changed the trajectory of her career, at least in the US. I know a lot of fans don’t care for it because it’s been so overplayed, but that doesn’t change just how amazing of a song it is.
@M24 (10) Just like with "…Baby One More Time", I thought its overexposure would harm my enjoyment of the song (I don't actively seek to listen to it these days) but it's still one of the greatest pop songs ever. And so it deserves a 10. The MV was again another victory for Britney, definitely toe-to-toe with Stronger and Everytime for best video of her career.
@Attis (10) Every person in this world probably know this song just based on that Bollywood string intro. The true definition of iconic
@Guyhawke! (10) Yes, it’s frustrating that the ‘locals’ celebrate ‘Toxic’ with a fervour that suggests they are unaware of anything else the living legend Britney Jean Spears recorded, but how many artists get a song of this magnitude that crosses generations? ‘Toxic’ is absolutely deserving of a 10, if for no other reason than to acknowledge the extraordinary inventiveness of Bloodshy & Avant: combining surf rock, a Bollywood soundtrack sample and the epic quality of a James Bond theme into one pop song speaks to the boldness of their vision. I first heard ‘Toxic’ on the ‘In The Zone’ ABC special and it was a revelation – it still is.
@Milotic (10) I will never understand why this wasn't the lead single.
Me either!
@Runawaywithme (10) The definition of iconic
@lilylu (10) There's a reason this is such an iconic song. That's because it's damn great.
@_hazzie_ (11) Just too iconic how could you not give it an 11. I remember driving home from a holiday and I switched the radio station 4 times and this song was playing on every one.
@Leogin (11) Probably Britney at her finest. This is one of the songs that define '00s for me. (kinda predictable as 11, but I though love enough about this and decided to go with it).
@KingBruno (11) What a sensational, inspiring, and above all, outright weird pop song this is. There are so many things happening here – the Bollywood sample (of which there are too few in pop), the Western Spaghetti riff, the many electronic quirks – but the mixing is done so painstakingly well that the song never misses a beat. Heck, one of the greatest songs ever made.
@Trouble in Paradise (11) Changed the pop music game AND the flight attendant game!
