First, thank you
@Holly Something for such hard work...I know it was trying at times, but you really made this so special.
As for the last few results: when you've scored the top 10 with all 10s, the last stretch really became an interesting "well let's see what happens" experiment for me. My last few thoughts:
"Breath On Me:" definitely her best album track. The rare occasion where some cigarette DJ plays it out at a club makes me lose my goddamned MIND. The build-up after the instrumental break is IMMACULATE, and just when you think you've climaxed with her high note, the filtered pulsating bass that continues into the following few measures managed to squeeze JUST a few drops more out of you. I once got in a fight with a visiting guest of my roommate (at the time, to whom I thankfully no longer speak) when she said Britney couldn't sing, and I played this for her and she said and it sounded terrible. I didn't care that I had known this girl for ten minutes, I CAUSED A SCENE.
"Stronger:" always a favorite, I never actually realized quite how much I actually liked it until I realized it might come out on top. It really is the perfect distillation of her first two albums' sound. The lyrical callback is pure genius – smart without being silly. And the claps, AND THE FOGHORN! How many songs does she have that are instantly recognizable, even without vocals? ICONIC.
"Toxic:" basic, yes; overplayed, yes; still 1000% pure pop perfection, yes. The fact that Britney's two most popular songs were originally meant for other artists shows how much unquantifiable Britney magic she actually contributes to each song.
"Gimme More:" THE RIGHTFUL WINNER. The song was so good, it propelled her career through the darkest times, even when she wasn't in a place to give it her all. I don't know if the world could have handled it if Peak Britney launched this song. I remember being in Vegas the weekend this came out (my birthday is in August – when she used to launch her lead singles – and I'd always go to Vegas with friends for my birthday) and we were actually at the club when
Britney herself appeared and played the track. None of the straights knew it or cared, they were busy flashing pics while I dropped it on the dance floor. It was A Moment.
Thanks to everyone for making this so fun (my first rate ever as well). Thanks again to Holly, and
LONG LIVE A FREE AND FABULOUS BRITNEY JEAN SPEARS!!!!!
