James Gunn's DCU TV / Movie Discussion

He/Him
It's extremely weird and frustrating considering I feel like - and my perspective may be skewed but I don't think so - the Bat-family as a whole are pretty popular. Like, I know Batman & Robin flopped terribly but did it really scare filmmakers off from using any characters outside of Bruce that badly? It's crazy to me. The fact that Two-Face kidnaps Gordon's wife and son and Barbara - a long-established character who is his daughter - isn't there or even mentioned is extremely irritating to me. And having her be there would have been perfect set-up for her to be Batgirl in Dark Knight Rises. An extremely missed opportunity. I hope there is a Robin introduced in The Batman sequel like has been rumored. I think it'd be really interesting to see.

And that's definitely part of it for me too. The first live-action movie about a non-Batman member of the Batfamily was so exciting, especially since Barbara is low-key my favorite member of the team besides Bruce himself. I am genuinely devastated it was so unceremoniously canceled and will never forgive Warner Brothers.
I think Nolan was hesitant to use any character that they wouldn't be able to do anything with them in the long run or name a character that would get tarnished by a writing choice. A couple examples assumed by fans being Anna Ramirez who could have been Renee Montoya, a couple chances at Harvey Bullock and then Juno Temple playing "Jen" who is completely Holly Robinson from the comics. It also could be because of paying creators of the characters too.

Despite the obvious slam dunk that is the Batfam (in terms of demographic appeal, merchandising, and brand/content building), I’ve always thought it was pretty clear that The Patriarchy always felt a little too ashamed of the funny tingles they got from (elder gay Schumacher’s) batnipples & batcheeks, which has relegated us to our two-decades-long knightmare of Grim Gritty Frank Miller Realism and Snyder/Randian Greyscale.

(Which also explains why in the comics, Jason “toxic masculinity” Todd and Damien “snot nosed daddy’s boy” Wayne keep getting front and center placement over Gay Icon Nightwing, literal bisexual Tim, and poor forgotten Steph and Cass and Duke).

One hope I have for the Gunn era is a return of a bit of camp, which – whatever else can be said about him – he seems to understand doesn’t necessarily equate to childishness of sterility.

They're giving The Flash a Superbowl spot for the first trailer. I can't believe they're going full steam ahead with this.

It’s testament to how well this movie tested and how desperate WB needs a blockbuster. Really curious if it will be just as good or better as Wonder Woman and Aquaman, arguably the best “Snyder-verse” movies.

With the recent talk of the Bat family, I was wondering, have any of you watched the Adam West series and did you enjoy it? I’ve been thinking of buying the dvd. I absolutely loved it as a child.

Love it. The rogues are among some of the best cast in comic book history, especially the main four. Julie Newmar's first appearance of Catwoman is properly villainous, while Gorshin's Riddler and Meredith's Penguin remain high points.

Batman ‘66 is literally what got me into reading comics, and everything else. It used to be syndicated when I was younger, and I would watch it every day after school. It is pure camp brilliance, and I highly recommend it!

Whew I just finished the season 3 of Harley Quinn and this has to be the best tv show of 2022 along with The White Lotus? Like, just absolutely brilliant.

Not sure if this is the right place to post it, but I’m rewatching Smallville for the first time in about a decade after loving it in my teen years and … it’s fucking great. I literally love it. Perfect as a teen drama and perfect as a superhero story. It’s a total time capsule of noughties TV. It’s naffness and dodgy effects are part of the charm. Kristen Kreuk single-handedly delayed my coming out by about eight years. And Erica Durance’s Lois is definitely one of the best on-screen Lois iterations that we’ve had, and unfortunately just proved to me how miscast Amy Adams was in Zack’s universe. And bring back freak-of-the-week TV structures more shows should do this!!

It was the hundredth episode, the one where Lana dies and then he goes back in time and then Jonathan dies, which triggered this post. A brilliant hour of TV!

How is Warner Discovery going to make any profit if they have no content to watch
Cheap reality shows that people will mindlessly watch. If only it was entertaining content like Real Housewives. Instead...
