James Gunn's DCU TV / Movie Discussion

I'm also not thrilled at everyone wiping the slate clean for Ezra. The lack of consequence is staggering. Yes, they have serious mental health issues that need to be addressed and worked on. But their behaviour and some specific actions were appalling and should never be excused.

I can say that it looks like Ezra gives a very good performance here, and I've said before they're a very talented actor. But none of that should give a free pass. But I think it's becoming clearer that a lot of fans are just disregarding it all because they're desperate for the movie to succeed, which is just mindblowing to me.
You wrote it much better than me. Thank you.

Seeing that The Flash is getting great reviews I just can't at people starting to find some redeemable things about Ezra (talking about his mental health and how it's good that they are starting to heal their mental health so we should be compassionate to him), so they can sleep at night knowing they are hyping a movie with a groomer.
I just wanted to say that they only use they/them, it and zir pronouns. I'm not attacking you or anything, I just wanted to help clear that up.

I'm still not sure how to feel about this movie or even to see it. I'm excited for all the Batman stuff and all the other characters, but I've never been sold on this universe's Flash and Ezra's continued attachment to it despite everything they've done has definitely turned me off it. I'll probably wait until it's on HBO Max to watch it for thr Batman stuff unless my family decides they wanna see it.

For those interested in Flash spoilers, here is some stuff I found that may be true. Normally I wouldn’t want to know for a film like this, but Ezra has soured me on it so I don’t mind knowing.

There will be cameos using archive footage of Helen Slater’s Supergirl, Christopher Reece’s Superman, Adam West’s Batman and Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman. I believe I read the tv show Flash, Teen Titans Go and Stargirl also appear in the same way.

New filmed cameos include Nicholas Cage as Superman fighting a spider, George Clooney as Batman and a final appearance for Cavill and Gadot as Superman and Wonder Woman. [/spoiler{

I do kind of want to see
Nicholas Cage as Superman fighting a spider

It’s ok. When I wrote it I went back and edited it but some I didn’t see. It was an honest mistake.

That trailer looks like one of the most garishly ugly things I've seen in a good minute. Keaton's Batman in broad daylight is a thing that no one needed to see.

Yeah I'm not seeing what the rest of you are seeing with this. It looks like explosions, cameos and the weird Whedon characterisation of Barry Allen. Fun?

I do think that DC is really suffering by letting Marvel get the jump on them with so many of these concepts like the multiverse, bringing back previous versions of characters and even Quicksilver's super speed scenes have stacked the deck against Flash. . .and that's before you get to the criminal headlining the film.

I have never been a fan of The Flash as a character nor was I ever that into Ezra's version of the character, but I did love Flashpoint Paradox and I do think this trailer has some interesting stuff in it. The reviews saying this movie is excellent also have me interested, although we won't know if that is just WB-fueled PR or actually legitimate positive criticism until we see some real reviews.

Some sources are saying it's better than they expected and they were pleasantly surprised. I feel like a lot of people going in to watch this will have that level of low expectation, it's inevitable after all the drama and delays.

Nah, I can’t justify going to see this. The marketing almost swayed me over by focusing on Keaton but then the Production Designer said this:
Talking to CBC, Austerberry said Miller did such a superb job that "[p]eople will forget" all the negative press the actor accumulated in the last couple of years. He stressed Miller's dedication and professionalism while being under "a lot of pressure." Austerberry pointed out Miller had to play two different versions of the character, switching roles every few days. According to the production designer, who won an Academy Award for The Shape of Water, Miller had only three days off during the entire shoot. They filmed six days a week and spent one in stunt rehearsals. It has been reported earlier that Miller did their own stuntsfor The Flash.

Fuck that.

Yes, fuck that all the way out of here. It's what we suspected was going to happen. The worst part of that is the praise for their "dedication and professionalism while under a lot of pressure". Yeah, pressure that should have seen them removed from the role and potentially in prison. And they were under pressure? Not the people they'd hurt along the way, no? Fucking hell, that is gross.

I'm in the same boat. I can't lie, I think the trailer made it look fun and a movie that I'd want to see. But I'm not giving any money to support it.

I could have sworn I read reports (or rumors) that he was actually difficult on set with all the issues they were going through. I’m still undecided if I’m going to see this…

I'm very torn about seeing FLASH.

On the one hand, I think it's garbage that Ezra appears to be experiencing no consequences for their actions. If they really have sought out help and turned over a new leaf, that's wonderful, but they're certainly keeping it to themselves if that's the case (though admittedly, that's probably WB's strategy – "don't say a fucking word to the press."). Still, it's obviously a very dark cloud hanging over the whole thing.

On the other hand, however, Christina Hodson wrote the script...which is by all accounts FABULOUS. For those unfamiliar, she wrote Birds of Prey, which was also amazing, yet unfairly derided by neckbeards "becuz women." She also wrote Batgirl, which was unfairly shitcanned by Zaslav to fund half his salary last year.

She's a super talented (BIPOC female) writer, and I would hate for any movie she writes – especially one that could be her "last chance" film, as is often the case in situations like this – to tank. Through no fault of her own, everything with her name on it (sans perhaps Bumblebee) has failed. She's been dealt a super unfair hand by The Hollywood gods, and deserves to keep writing films.

Sigh.

Apologies for the double post, but:

I finally watched the finale of TITANS, and...it died the way it lived: making little sense, squandering classic villains, focusing on the wrong things, and completely mishandling the characters and their powers.

RIP, you disaster of a show about my favorite comic book ever.

It was always a mess, wasn’t it?

I basically only watched this last season to see Conor Leslie's Donna return, and...she never did.

Raven and Tim got costumes in (checks notes) the last episodes of the entire show. They brought back inter dimensional demon lord Trigon for...11 seconds, only to be killed by a computer nerd. Gar spent the climax of the final episode attempting to pull cables out of a plug and going "it's too hard, I can't!" while I shouted "TURN INTO A FUCKING GORILLA!!!" at my tv for twenty minutes.

I adore Ana Diop (truly one of the most gorgeous women on television) and enjoyed her performance, but...that character was not Kory (neither the annoying naive cartoon Kory, nor the passionate bezerker warrior of the Wolfman/Perez days). Plus I hated her costume, and the fact that she never ONCE had actual star bolts made me angry. Why did we give Starfire (checks notes) blue flame powers? Come on. Ana was done dirty (though at least she got to hook up with Brendan).

Despite having some of the best superhero costumes ever on TV, most everything else about that show was a garbage fire.

I hope Gunn's new DC plan includes a live action Titans project worthy of their legacy (the new comic relaunch will hopefully help boost their rep).

Looks like they’re starting to cast Superman. I’m more nervous / excited for the Lois casting than anyone else!! Rachel Brosnahan would be my pick from the above crew because I think she has the most … bite, but none are jumping out at me. Emma and Samara don’t feel right for the role at all.

Love her usually, but I stand by the fact that Amy Adams was a massive miscast. Just totally wrong for the role, as excellent as she usually is. The role was also very badly written. Kate Bosworth was genuinely quite brilliant in hindsight in my opinion. I do still lament the lost trilogy we could’ve had with her and Brandon at the helm because they were both great.

I’m still a bit apprehensive about Gunn’s Superman. I just really want a sincere, beautifully shot, art-deco-filled Superman movie with a strongly realised Metropolis. I want the Superman version of The Batman. And Gunn’s films so far have just been a bit … silly. I like them, but I’m not sure the tone is right for Superman.

I was rewatching The Incredibles recently, and the first twenty minutes of that would kinda be my moodboard for a new Superman movie.
