I think you need a label to really turn things around on streaming. The way Warner has shaped up Madonna's digital presence has been incredible. Who does Janet have? Randy?
I totally get the reasonings behind some of you guys not considering The Velvet Rope as her best album, to each their own, taste is subjective etc., but I can't help but be totally dumbfounded every time it is not only not on top of your lists, but not even close to being at least number two. It reads as utter sacrilege in my universe, it makes no damn sense with my fantasy.
The Velvet Rope is my personal fave, but I can completely understand an argument for any of her albums from Control through Damita Jo being someone else's.
Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope are my top 2. I like janet. a lot, but it’s not an album I return to often.

This discussion made me consider what a feat it was to release 3 sprawling masterpieces like Rhythm Nation, janet and Velvet Rope back to back, all of them so different while simultaneously being a distillation of their time period. Rhythm Nation is the ultimate new jack swing album, all brittle rhythms, hard synths and sweet melodies, janet anticipated the sexy, sultry R&B revolution of Toni Braxton and TLC and The Velvet Rope was basically the blueprint of R&B for the 00s and beyond with touches of electronica and moody alt-R&B (the title track, Got Til It's Gone, I Get Lonely). Her mind, honestly.
My ranking based on quality: The Velvet Rope Rhythm Nation Janet. Control Unbreakable All for You The Rest My ranking based on enjoyment Rhythm Nation Unbreakable All for You Janet. Control The Velvet Rope 20 Y.O Damita Jo A gruesome death Firey torture Discipline
I think Control is still somewhat underrated. Yes, it's a shorter album, but He Doesn't Know I'm Alive is the only weak track. You Can Be Mine actually kind of slaps. Everything else is single worthy (well, most of them were!)
