Janet Jackson

I get the adoration for All For You and Damita. There are true standouts on both albums that deserve to be smashes. But for those of us older antiques here who lived through the Control/1814/Janet and Velvet eras in real time, she went from someone with an artistic vision with something to say to… a pop artist. Still love her, of course, but it’s kinda like doing 40 mph in your top of the line racer.

Yeah while I love both Damita and All for You they are a step down from Rhythm Nation/janet./Velvet Rope both in terms of the actual music/concept and the whole campaign and era surrounding the release. But music changed after the internet and napster I guess, things were never as epic again for Madonna/Mariah/Janet.

I'll be honest I haven't explored any of her discography before the 00s outside the singles, it's kinda daunting because there's so much to explore ddd (where do I start?!).

I need to do it though, I recently did the same with Mary J. Blige and her 90s stuff was an absolute ride!

Janet would be the most obvious starting place because sonically it hasn’t dated as much. That’s The Way Love Goes laid the template for many a 90s diva… It’ll also enable you to see the artistic leap she made by the time she got to Velvet.

I honestly recommend starting with Design of a Decade. It has most of the essentials from Control and Rhythm Nation and was the album that got me into her earlier stuff after loving All For You.

Janet. is the best place to start with the '90s, and then work your way up to The Velvet Rope which is a masterpiece, but less instant because it's less focused on the singles than the previous three.

Damita Jo's anniversary passing last week with nothing but two reposted Instagram stories of a fan's drawings...

Maybe they're saving the deluxe edition for next year since it's the 20th?
