Janet Jackson

Janet always gave me the impression of someone who could step away at any given moment. Pre-2004, and especially now. Her career never seemed to be a driving force for her personally, even if she’s a brilliant artist.
This is so spot on. I don't even mind, I just wish her legacy was managed better. At least all of her vids are finally up on YouTube!!

Revisiting janet. once again, and I so wish she'd have gone with Where Are You Now as a single instead of the What'll I Do/Whoops Now double A-side. The latter in particular still feels like such a weird note to end the era on
Yes so weird to have a SMASH! with the last single of a huge two year era and with a semi bonus track too!
It's literally the biggest hit of the era after Love Goes in Europe, Top 10 in most major markets. Where are you now would have done an Every Time.

I was looking at her janet.-era streaming numbers and was surprised to see both Again and Any Time Any Place (especially the latter) having significantly higher streams than If, for some reason I thought If was a much bigger hit.

I can't even process the Together Again show. If you have the chance, go.

I'm in Nashville for T*ylor. I had no idea Janet was playing tonight until I heard it from someone at the hotel I'm staying at. I stalked tickets and managed to nab a standard price ticket in the lower bowl, 4th row. My last and only time seeing her was the State of The World tour in support of Unbreakable. That was amazing but being closer and this setlist having everything from the biggest hits to extreme deep cuts made this a better show. While the staging isn't anything complex, you're there for Janet. Not only does the setlist remind you of the impact her music has had across decades - we're talking some of the best songs ever recorded - but the fact that she can dance and sing like this after all of the work she's put in was astounding. I think her voice sounded even better than it did in 2017? The Again belt, the Scream screams, the All For You verses... I hope someone doesn't tell me she has pre-recorded vocals. I mean for some I would get and she definitely doesn't sing everything straight through because of all the dancing but I never once questioned her ability.

This is going to send me into a Janet hole for a while and I don't wanna come out.

Likely because 'Again' is from Poetic Justice and the R K*lly remix of 'Any Time Any Place' is popular.

If seemed like it came too soon after Love Goes so that stole some of its thunder back in the day. It also isn’t very radio / playlist friendly being a racket banger. So I can see why ballads are doing better on streaming.

If seems to be more of a fan favourite single than one of Janet's "signature" songs. It's a pretty wild sounding song (Fusing a soul sample with New Jack Swing and industrial rock??? Like who was doing it like Janet back then?) compared to That's The Way..., obviously still iconic in it's own way with the music video, choreo, performances, etc. but yeah I don't think it's remembered much outside of her fanbase (undeservingly).

She does. She kinda invented unclockable pre-rec for a dancing artist.

It seems as though she’s singing live more in recent years, and sounding great (her choreo is more subdued as a result when you compare to, say, Metamprphosis not so long ago). Nothing to do with ‘ability’ really.

Watching this now...I have a really vague memory of it but I didn't realize Janet was the first person MTV honored with an Icon special. The shot of her shoulder-shimmying to Destiny's Child singing Let's Wait Awhile is gif-worthy

I wish Britney had been part of the performances (I'm guessing scheduling conflicts given the time). The original TRL generation Janet stan.

Also P!nk really showed up and said I'm going to give the biggest serve of my life and never do it again. Not a single crumb left!

I think it was just something for fun for documenting their time on the road during the janet. Tour. Doesn’t the video feature all her dancers? It’s been ages since I saw it.
