Jennifer Rush

She's so underrated it's not even funny. One of the best voices ever...wished she got better material at times. I love nearly all of her albums, even "Classics" from 1998 (mostly newly recorded singles) has some real gems:

Or her dramatic interpretation of "I come undone '98":

I recently discovered her music after listening to a Laura Branigan greatest hits with her cover of "The Power of Love". I thought to myself "that sounds familiar?". Looked it up and turns out it was covered by Celine Dion in the 90s but Jennifer Rush did the original. I had a vague recollection of hearing Jennifer's name so I was interested. Absolutely loved The Power of Love and then delved in her other songs (Ring of Ice, I Come Undone, Wings of Desire, Madonna's Eyes, Destiny, Love Get Ready, Higher Ground, etc.) and loved what I was hearing.

I've now got her debut album and "Passion" on CD. I'd love to get the Stronghold box at some point too.

I have all her albums + Stronghold. I like most of them, although I agree that she should have gotten better material at times.

Can't believe it´s been 10 years since she released her last album. I quite liked it, especially this little number and Echoes Love:

Finally got a copy of the Stronghold boxset. Wonderfully curated set. Rare songs, b-sides, 12" mixes, single mixes, spanish re-recordings, soundtrack singles... lots of wonderful stuff on here. I think any record label thinking of doing a similar boxset for one of their artists needs to look at this one and see exactly what fans want.

......apart from the artwork!

Well... I wasn't going to say anything but I agree. Not the most flattering artwork they could've chosen.

Considering most of the material is from the 80s, I don't see why they couldn't have used some old photoshoots of her from that time. No need for any new photos really.

Which is exactly what I did for my set, a few years ago!

I've been working my way through her EMI albums again. 'Jennifer Rush', 'Out Of My Hands' and 'Credo' are all so good. It's almost impossible to pick favourite songs, but for anyone who hasn't heard the 1990s period of her career then do yourself a favour and take a listen.

Credo (the song) is so good. A hidden gem. She has such a recognizable voice even if worldwide she was mostly a one-hit wonder.

Whatever she did to her face from the 90s onwards though... she looks scary.

The Power of Love seems to have many different mixes available. I think there's at least 8 or 9 versions but I may not have the full list:

1. Original Album version (6:00) - On the original German version of Jennifer's debut album.

2. International Album version (5:46) - On the so-called "International version" of the album.

3. Radio Edit (4:53) - From German 7" promo. Included on a 1995 CD single and the Stronghold box set.

4. U.K. Radio Edit (4:20) - Not sure if this one actually exists. A UK 7" promo from 1985 includes both a "radio edit" and a "long version". The radio edit has the same length as the Walter Samuel Single Mix below, but his name isn't mentioned anywhere in the credits and the "long version" is probably the international album version (but mistakenly given the time length of the German album version).

5. Si Tu Eres Mi Hombre Y Yo Tu Mujer (5:15) - Spanish re-recording released in 1986. Released in Spain, Portugal, Ecuador, Colombia and possibly some more Spanish-speaking countries. Included on the Stronghold box set.

6. Walter Samuel Single Mix (4:20) - From U.K. August 1986 re-release. The single version for U.S. and Canadian releases and also the b-side on "Si Tu Eres Mi Hombre Y Yo Tu Mujer". Released on the CD compilation The Power of Love: The Best of Jennifer Rush, released in 2000.

7. Walter Samuel Extended Mix (7:12) - From U.K. August 1986 re-release. Included on the Stronghold box set.

8. Orchestral Remix (6:00) - From German re-release in November 1986. Same version appears on 7" and 12" singles. Also released in other European countries, but not the UK as far as I know.

9. Orchestral Remix [No Fade] (6:09) - According to this discogs page the Brazilian 7" single includes a slightly longer version of the Orchestral Remix that does not fade at the end.

I'd be interested to know if there's any more official versions that I missed!

The NOW 1985 Yearbook has a 4.27 edit...which version/mix is this based on?
I can't be certain since I don't own this, but I would guess it's the Walter Samuel Single Mix. The listed length is 4.20 on a lot of releases, but I think it's actually longer. The Power of Love: The Best of Jennifer Rush compilation includes this version and states the length as 4.30 in the liner notes, but the discogs entry has 4.28 instead.

Edit: Who knows, maybe the original stated 4.20 length in 1986 was an error and meant to say 4.30 instead?

@Eric Generic Following on my previous post, I think I've streamlined my list of official versions of The Power of Love to this:

1984-1986 mixes
1. Original album version (6:00)
2. Radio edit version of above (4:53)
3. International album version (5:46) - remixed by Walter Samuel, sometimes mistakenly listed with 6:00 time.
4. Radio edit version of above (4:27) - commonly known simply as "Remix" with a stated 4:20 time.
5. Orchestral remix (6:00) - possible 6:09 version exists on Brazilian 7-inch single.
6. Si Tu Eres Mi Hombre Y Yo Tu Mujer (5:15)
7. Extended Remix (7:12) - remixed by Walter Samuel for U.K. 12-inch release (1986).

1998 mixes
1. Classics album version (6:07)
2. Si Tu Eres Mi Hombre (6:07) - from Spanish edition of Classics.
3. Special edit version (3:34) - from compilation "The Very Best of (The Virgin/EMI Years)" (2010).

Interestingly, it seems that the Orchestral Remix was the most common single version throughout Europe. The single was first released in West Germany in January 1985 with the album version. The U.K. single followed in June with the international album version. When the single topped the U.K. chart in October 1985, CBS began gradually releasing the single throughout the rest of the world, including a re-release in West Germany. The European singles released between October 1985 and January 1986 seem to all include the Orchestral Remix instead of their respective album versions. This was probably a tactic to hold back the more well-known album version (Original or International) as an album-exclusive to increase album sales while also offering a slightly different version as the single for people who already had the album.

Considering how widely released it was, it is strange that the Orchestral remix was left off the otherwise comprehensive Stronghold box set!
